#33 tips: how to run your server at a higher tickrate in TF2 General Discussion

I would be open to letting EVL Gaming customers test this out with their comp discount servers (they just need to open a ticket and ask). However it literally does double the needed CPU and bandwidth on the serverside. Client side bandwidth also doubles, which can add more latency. This is why we charge more for 128 tick CS:GO vs 66 tick CS:GO. It works fairly well for CS:GO which is why valve hasn't locked CS:GO like they have with TF2.

#16 EVLtv Caster Feedback in TF2 General Discussion
KevinIsPwn@vibhavp

They (last time I checked) use xsplit with flash graphics.

c0ld did that for our battle royale, but Kinch/Rondego and I don't do that for the weekly casts. Instead the current setup is Xsplit / NodeCG. We have NodeCG running on a VPS so we can do a two man production setup. We've been waiting to get scoreboard / other bundles but most that are public did not work, though very recently we finally were able to get a hold of one.

I have an OBS / NodeCG setup with transitions, scoreboard, etc all working. Some of our camera people are having weird issues with it though, such as NodeCG graphics suddenly vanishing. Once we get those all worked out there will be a huge bump in quality.

KevinIsPwnplease don't stream 1080p. nothing that you have access to will stream 1080p60fps nice enough to where it will be better than 720p60fps. unless you have some evl supercomputer that i'm unaware of.

We have some pretty high end stuff that just got yanked from production at evlgaming.com, if we pull it off it would probably be a dual pc setup. We would test first to make sure it actually works well though ;)

vibhavpCould you add lower quality to the stream? I have shitty internet, and viewing at Source is really hard for me.

Out of curiosity whats your download speed? We aim for 1500 - 2000kbps on the bit rate for streams, so if you have 2-3mbps of download (and have access to all of it) you should still be good to watch.

If we are able to get twitch partnership (and I'm confident we will get there sometime this season), we'll up our bit rate and do 1080p, and you'll be able to down scale so that you are able to watch. Already at 2000kbps the picture has stream artifacts, so going any lower will make it look worse unfortunately :(

Its also possible that you have lag because FLASH sucks, and there isn't an html5 player available for most people. I have a good download speed, but watching twitch on the website sometimes is laggy. Using something like livestreamer pulls down the stream into any media player (like VLC) and has a much better framerate.

#3 DESERTBASH LAN TF2 Finals in Events
ScilliantNice, any knowledge on which teams will be there

AFAIK There won't be any TF2 comp teams here, but it should still be a cool game. We're streaming to try and get the word out about DESERTBASH, as it has the potential to be similar to a GXL but on the west coast in the near future. This is one of their smaller quarterly events, only 52 gamers. We're hoping to bring a bigger event soon. Its tricky to find a venue for 100+ people on a non-profit budget, but we are optimistic :)

Disclaimer, I'm on the DESERTBASH admin team.

#9 Volunteer for the new and improved Battle Royale! in TF2 General Discussion

Thanks for the feedback Iso. I'm on the same page as you, high fees aren't the end-all answer to this. A couple of things we've gathered from the event that will change:

- Signups were way to early, too many people forgot about it. Newbie division will now only have 1-2 weeks to signup (pro div will have a bit longer, but not too much longer)
- Some (not all) of our ads hit general gaming subreddits, although most were pointed at /r/tf2 and /r/truetf2
- Practice matches were supposed to help us weed out the no-shows in advance, that didn't work at all
- FFW's caused people to lose track of their schedule. We're building a real time scheduling system that will show you in your timezone when you are expected to play, and will dynamically update if there is a bye or FFW
- Players were not invested in the event and didn't feel bad about not showing up

The fee's are going to be for the pro division, it won't be much <$5 each. These fees are necessary so we can get the badass prizes we want to give out to each player, and to get better servers. With all the recent shady activity with events as of recently (FTC etc) we very likely will publish our numbers from the event, and explicitly state where the money is going for transparency sake. The newb division will have some type of entrance fee, but more than likely a key, or a couple ref.

aieraapplesteakAre you guys ready for even more amazing whitelists and great admin help regarding issues with teams?! We did GREAT with 4 people per team, so what problems could arise with 9 there!!!1! Please follow us, I swear we're serious.you certainly sound entitled for someone who is being given a free tournament...

also I would love to help, but I'm not really qualified, is there anything someone who falls into my camp can do to help the event?

The free part may not be so true anymore (our past two events were free). The biggest issue with our winter event was the no shows. We didn't have this problem last summer, and didn't really expect it for winter. Having SSD's as a prize wasn't really good enough motivation apparently.
That said we're maybe going to be charging 1 key for entry, or a couple bucks per person, that way players are invested in the event and we can actually spend money on getting better servers rather than relying on our directors to pony up for whatever we can find on budget.

Probably in the next 1-2 months we'll start to focus more on setting up rules / policies etc, which our playerOPS team develops. We may be looking for those type of folks in the next month or two.

Just want to be clear, we're not announcing all of our final plans yet for the players, but are just looking for staff. ;)
