#163 ESEA S15 NA Open Happenings/Predictions in TF2 General Discussion

Tery, you're next up, my man. I felt like we've played each other so much over the last two seasons that I was a little picky on your team's faults, but hopefully I did you guys justice.

radiumMr_Owllegitimately, it seems pretty silly to me. I'm sure I'll come off as whining or whatever, and that's fine, but it's frustrating to build a team over the course of a couple seasons, and finally have a chance to be in the top tier of open, and teams like the budteam, mesr's team, etc. come in and are immediately going to be right there. And in terms of their straight level of play, they likely belong at the top of open, but it really takes away a lot of the incentive to build a team from the group up.

I get that the rules are that teams have to have a season in open before moving up, but with the new move to main, why not move every open playoff team + these 3-4 'offclass' teams to IM to play with the current low/mid IM teams that were left behind from last season? Having scrimmed a pretty good number of the current open playoff teams, plus some of the current low-IM teams and some of the new offclass teams, they're all pretty close in terms of skill level*. That'd help flesh out the new IM and still allow Main to be populated with 8-12 teams who are close to equal. This upcoming season is a pretty unique opportunity to start all four divisions on the right path for continued success rather than the lopsided messes that we currently have in open especially.

*yes I know that scrims are not the most accurate representation of skill level, given that teams scrim to try out strats and not to win, but you can still get a pretty good sense of DM and coordination from them.

I don't know how you could force people to play in a division that they don't want to play in. Sometimes people want to try new things and have a little fun in Open - and I think we're going a little too far if we're looking to take that aspect of the game away from them.

An alternative solution to this problem would be if those "invite pugteams" were to seize existing IM rosters (and there are a few of them left). The issue with this is that they have to follow the ESEA hijack rule - and there are some good reasons as to why this is a bad idea for their purposes.

There will always be teams in any specific division that do not belong there. That's life, and I don't know if revising the rulebook to deal with 3-4 specific teams this season is a good idea.

The last three seasons of Open had the exact same problem - and we still saw some "original material" make it into IM as a full team.

Honestly, my opinion has changed some since I made this post. At the time there were wild rumors floating around teams that were going to be formed in open that would have been far better than the teams that have actually formed. Having seen most of these teams in action, they will be decent (read: playoff) open teams that will by no means run away with the division. There's no 'superteam' that I see that will take open by storm.

nah, london_calling/ques are both better at this than me, and they both have a better mind for the game for sure. I'd be happy to assist them in any way I can, but I don't know that I'm cut out for actual article writing.

at this point we're trying to figure out who is going to be writing for esea and if we're even going to continue with a separate set of rankings on tf.tv. i would say, owl, that doing these kinds of write ups are a little premature before the inevitable registration extension but are still a lot of fun.

we should talk soon!

of course they're way premature. A bunch of the teams in open don't even have six rostered, and at least some of these teams are going to die or change up their rosters monumentally before the season starts. But I'd compare it to college football fans doing their early power rankings just after the previous season ends. It's just to get people talking. Like I said in my first post, almost all of this is based on very little, and quite frankly, I expect most of it to be entirely wrong a week or two from now.

As with many teams filled with former invite players who offclass in open, the question with big bongs is not one of gamesense or DM ability, but dedication. A number of these guys have performed well at the highest level of TF2, so there

I just wrote some words about some open teams. I'm kinda just going down the list and putting together a quick preview of each team along with a prediction. I'll post them here but please don't take what I say too seriously. Frankly, I've never even played against any of the three teams I wrote about, and besides watching some streams, creeping some sizzlingstats, and making wild conjectures, there's nothing of substance backing up any of my thoughts. If you want to correct me, berate me for being an idiot, or praise me wildly for my spot-on analysis, feel free. First preview to follow shortly.
