the301stspartanshruggerechanical skill = more decision making. Making a game easier mechanically doesn't make it the smarter game, take CSGO for example. Maybe you are countering his phrasing but I think it was obvious he wasn't referring to "dumbed down" as a less cerebral type of play, you are just arguing semantics at that point. He just meant that the mechanics have less depth to them
Huh no I was only arguing the general practice of calling a game "dumbed down" on the basis of DM mechanics. I'm not saying Overwatch involves more or less decision making than tf2. From what I see, I wouldn't even agree on the mechanics front. But I'm completely unqualified to make any statement about any of that because I've never played the game.Show Content:(
avast never said the game was dumbed down though. in the context of his sentence, he simply said the mechanics were dumbed down, which means something different from what you are implying.
the301stspartanAvastthe301stspartanpure level of mechanical skillvery dumbed down
It always confuses me when people write sentences like these and don't notice they're oxymorons
Explain
"pure mechanical skill", aka hand-eye coordination and reflexes are arguably the videogaming skills least dependant on your higher cognitive functions, they're literally the "dumbest" part of gaming. You can have fantastic reflexes and be dim as a glow worm's armpit. So if a game focuses less on aim and more on decision making (which I'm not saying tf2 doesn't), it's technically the "less dumb" game.
The problem with your logic there is the assumption that less mechanical skill = more decision making. Making a game easier mechanically doesn't make it the smarter game, take CSGO for example. Maybe you are countering his phrasing but I think it was obvious he wasn't referring to "dumbed down" as a less cerebral type of play, you are just arguing semantics at that point. He just meant that the mechanics have less depth to them
AvastSheepylolOK so is overwatch actually any good? Is it worth me pre-ordering and do they give out beta keys to people who pre-order? I haven't seen much of the game so I don't know if its worth me buying now or not. Also will it actually kill TF2 I have noticed a lot of top tf2 players are gonna move to it. I think Tek even said at lan that he's going to overwatch now along with many others. I feel like i'm not done with tf2 yet like I still have 2 more seasons in me but I don't want all the top players moving to OW yet so I can still have solid competition for the next few seasons.
Edit:
Also I'll go ahead and say if you're looking that super high skill ceiling mechanically based class shooter like TF2, OW is not that game. It will never be like TF2 outside of the classes and their similarity to TF2 design points.
The quake-like movement and aiming components are simply not there. There are OW unique mechanics that can be learned but in terms of the pure level of mechanical skill needed it is very very dumbed down.
Pretty much this, the game has POTENTIAL to be good at what it is trying to do but it will never be a replacement for all the aspects that draw people to tf2, which is why I don't see OW as being the "tf2 killer" people think it will be.
oh, true. I have the benefit of living 20 mins away from all my relatives, so i didn't even consider that
weekly reminder to show up for matches tonight! less ffw's please

not proud :| probably first pc game i ever played for more than an hour
Se7enI mean, you can look at literally every player on the roster and make the analysis for yourself.
CrazyErika- Mains pyro, hasn't even started in a single season since season 11
Pulse- best spy in tf2 and amazing at every class like two years ago, but idk how good he is now AND from looking at his logs he hardly even plays for them
Misskay- Medmain, hasn't started since like season 8
Daft Kid- pyromain
Nokk- engiemain
WD whaz- never even heard of him
kyle- hl plat scout in like season 5?????
messiah- haven't seen him play in ages either, can't judge his skill
idk if this qualifies as blatant sandbagging but that's just me
it's completely understandable but it is funny that the only player u havent heard of on this list is the person who played in invite
trashdamn, I wanna see that POV so badly

edit: hope that is snakewater
whoops fixed messiah. reg ends in a little over 1 hour!
IF YOU DO make a team, please post who is on it so I can remove them from list! and if you get on a team, for that matter. WOuld make creating teams a bit easier. If I had the foresight, I would have included "willing to be in pug team" option but I'm a bit late on that. Reg ends in 2 hours btw
there are enough players to make a couple teams lol, if anyone was willing to do that. making a pug team that will play for a full month would be a lot to ask though but if anyone is willing you should go for it
