#231 FITES LANFest Feb 21-23 2014 in LAN Discussion

this fites will be my 15th LAN. A lot of the people going I've seen at LANs before, but there are quite a few people on the list I don't remember seeing before. I figured I'd put together this little post with some helpful tips for any first timers, or anyone else who wants to make their LAN experience a little easier.

transporting your PC (vehicle)

- flying with your PC is not recommended. It can be done, but it's a pain in the ass. There is also a good chance of damage to your hardware. The TSA will also give you a hard time about it.

- bus/train is ok, just make sure you keep your stuff with you and not in the luggage area. Theft and/or damage are almost guaranteed if you do that.

- car is the best way to go. If you don't have a car full of people the best way to load the PC in the car is to stand it up on the floor behind the passenger seat, and slide the seat back enough that it's firmly held in place by the passenger seat and the back seat. If you have other people riding with you, the trunk is ok just make sure you pack it so that nothing rolls around.

transporting your PC (on foot)

- the trip from the parking lot to the LAN room at fites isn't that bad, but with a big heavy case it can be a pain. Some cases, like the CM Storm Scout, have built in handles which are great for carrying it around. If your case doesn't have a handle, you might want to check this out.

I have one for my tower and it was well worth it.

- transporting your LCD monitor is easy if you kept the original box and all it's packing material. If you still have that, simple repack it and transport it that way. It'll be perfectly safe. If you don't have the box, you can get something like this.

- a cheap $20 piece of luggage from Walmart packed with pillows also makes for decent monitor transportation. You can also lay it screen up on a seat in the car but considering how fragile and expensive they can be I wouldn't suggest it.

security

- remember to set a windows password, and lock it when you go AFK

- if you are playing on a laptop, get one of these (currently on sale).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00000K4KH

- that lock can also be used to secure an LCD monitor (they have the same type of slot on the back). If you thread the lock through a hole on your case, wrap it around a table leg, and lock it into the back of your monitor you can lock everything down. For a PC it's probably overkill, but it's essential for laptops.

- if you have any expensive peripherals, make sure to take them with you if you are going afk for any decent length of time (food/sleep/etc)

I hope these tips will come in handy for someone. See you at the LAN.

#226 FITES LANFest Feb 21-23 2014 in LAN Discussion

There's enough players for an additional HL tournament, but not enough time. The 6s tournament will probably go on for quite some time, and there are already other tournaments (L4D2, csgo, etc...). Some HL pugs could happen on Friday maybe.

#10 Thoughts on Steelseries Rival? in Hardware
UnwittyPersonally, I really like the non braided cords. I've had some problems with the SS braided cords in the past as they break apart after a few months of use, then you'll get some messy hairs.

Clip one of those on your desk where the cord contacts. Feed the cord through the clip. Braid will never fray again.

As for the mouse, it might be decent, but it might be shit. Go with a deathadder, zowie FK, or G400. They are pretty much universally considered the best gaming mice.

#26 ESEA-O Grand Finals: Quantum Flux vs. BUDSQUAD in Events

Did you reall take the time to add all that up? AG main had clockwork, dummy, and blaze and they didnt get casted. Unless there are other events planned at the same time, all grand finals should be casted.

#8 mousepad problem in Hardware

Try another mousepad or without a mousepad just to rule out an issue with your mouse. I doubt this is the issue as its happening with multiple mice, but I'd try it anyway just to be sure.

#2 I need a new HUD in Customization

I use an old version of yahud that I've modified quite a bit. It's very clean and minimalistic. I could send it to you later of you wanna try it (I'm at work right now).

KhakiI feel like a comp gaming house would be a goldmine for a reality tv show

I'm sure it would be. Just look at all the complete crap they put on TV. If people wanna watch washed up rappers and "rock stars" give sluts herpes I'm sure they would turn in to watch nerds rage at each other.

#27 tf2mix in TF2 General Discussion

LOL papa,

As a former long time admin of both pug.na, and tf2mix (and tf2.gather.us... anyone remember that? Anyone? Anyone? Fuck, I'm old.) my stance is the same as its always been. If its legal in competitive play, it should be legal in pugs.

Sometimes you get the occasional troll who wants to run heavy or something the whole time. That's when the admins should come in and ban someone. Off classing is important for breaking stalemates, for holding last without ubers, and other things. Punish the idiots who abuse it, not everyone.
