#231 TF2 benchmarks in TF2 General Discussion

trying to test process lasso, with a potential use-case:

//-dxlevel 98, twitch stream, youtube video + a bunch of chrome tabs in BG
2639 frames 21.835 seconds 120.86 fps ( 8.27 ms/f) 21.442 fps variability
2639 frames 20.788 seconds 126.95 fps ( 7.88 ms/f) 20.675 fps variability

//now w/ process lasso
2639 frames 20.620 seconds 127.98 fps ( 7.81 ms/f) 14.487 fps variability
2639 frames 20.828 seconds 126.71 fps ( 7.89 ms/f) 14.216 fps variability
2639 frames 20.668 seconds 127.68 fps ( 7.83 ms/f) 14.173 fps variability

thought I found some sort of proof that process lasso does something objectively useful, and restarted TF2 to check. then got:

//non-lasso
2639 frames 18.971 seconds 139.11 fps ( 7.19 ms/f) 12.719 fps variability
2639 frames 18.601 seconds 141.87 fps ( 7.05 ms/f) 12.209 fps variability
2639 frames 18.711 seconds 141.04 fps ( 7.09 ms/f) 12.199 fps variability

//on-lasso
2639 frames 18.894 seconds 139.68 fps ( 7.16 ms/f) 12.089 fps variability
2639 frames 18.838 seconds 140.09 fps ( 7.14 ms/f) 11.836 fps variability
2639 frames 18.885 seconds 139.74 fps ( 7.16 ms/f) 12.434 fps variability
2639 frames 18.878 seconds 139.79 fps ( 7.15 ms/f) 12.039 fps variability

...wherein I got consistently higher frames and lower fps variability all-around, despite only ever touching process lasso. other people in the update thread have noticed similarly. (also, any potential advantage process lasso gave immediately became very marginal, at best)

if you got lower frames this update, try restarting the game once and check benchmarks again

VanaLosing frames on this update for whatever reason.

Edit: Restarted TF2 and consistently getting benchmarks 20 frames higher than what I was previously getting, what!?

...odd, this happened to me, too. it's not even like I updated after the restart

#16 process lasso in TF2 General Discussion

kept benchmarking this in what I'd assume to be the use-case scenario (bunch of chrome tabs open, a 720p60 youtube video and a 60fps twitch stream running at source), and...

...I'm getting no consistent benchmarks. I thought process lasso when set up was getting maybe less fps variance at first, but now I'm getting more FPS and less variance when I set all the CPU affinities back to default and shut down the core engine.

there's perhaps a chance that process lasso is good if you're streaming (set tf2 and OBS/xsplit to take their own half of your cores), but from the standpoint of an average user, it's likely useless

#1 TF2 Update for 11/13/15 in TF2 General Discussion

http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=19307

- Improved map load times for players on Windows (DX9), Mac and Linux
- Fixed random client crashes affecting some players with cosmetics
- Fixed random crashes on Mac, Linux and Windows XP that could affect users during map load and during play
- Fixed a bug with some ambient_generic entities failing to play their sounds
- Fixed a bug where players would see cosmetic items following them around while playing Mann vs. Machine
- Fixed not being able to 'inspect' the World Traveler hat
- Updated the model/materials for The Tyrantium Helmet, The Digit Divulger, and The Toy Soldier
- Added Asiafortress Season 8 medals
- Mannpower update
-- Updated health kits to give players the normal amount even if their powerup increases max health
-- Updated the Vampire powerup to slightly reduce the amount of health received from flamethrower attacks. The flamethrower now matches the minigun in this regard.
-- Fixed a missing material for ctf_hellfire

Other Things:
- new digit divulger
- a new texture for rd_asteroid
- koth_probed and ctf_2fort_invasion is back in official quickplay rotation (arena doesn't have a quickplay yet, maybe it will soon?)
- there is now a mapcycle_ladder.txt (thx Phi)

(wickedplayer is presumably either sleeping or at work, SORRY WICKEDPLAYER)

e: XTRA UPD8:

-Fixed a client crash on startup for players using DirectX 8

#21 Surgeries in Off Topic

not the worst, but the most surreal: had to get a tooth pulled, sleeping gas didn't work on me so I was at best sleepy for most of it, and because I'm a cheap fuck I just walked home half-conscious with a tissue in my mouth to stop the bleeding

#6 process lasso in TF2 General Discussion

in general, you're only likely to see performance gains if you heavily use anything else. setting other processes to not use core 0 only works out in your favor if any of those programs were going to use it anyways

#3 process lasso in TF2 General Discussion

(context: I made that infographic + didn't expect it to get super-huge b/c I was just asking if most of my info was correct, which I still don't fully know because beyond people just saying "it's bad" there's not much in the way of real statistics involving most of this, which is sort of a nuisance)

switch *.exe back to 0-3 once you're done playing tf2, that just gives the rest of yr processes core 0 back

#229 TF2 benchmarks in TF2 General Discussion

question: how difficult would it be to create a new general demo for benchmarking?

the current demo should still stick around for the sake of quick comparison over long stretches of time, but things like weapon skins aren't taken into account with it, when that's well-known to be a major FPS killer

we should all be lucky that tf2 is only a half-optimized mess, because bethesda is really bad at physics engines

#34 New main. Need hlelp in Q/A Help

if you're good at MGE, that likely means you're going to be pretty good at prediction and heavy micromanagement regarding movement and optimal punishes

obviously, that's not the entirety of TF2, but those are pretty great qualities to have in a teammate, and I don't see why you shouldn't practice it as a result. if you're seriously hurting your team overall by habit of doing hyper-aggressive stuff, that's not really MGE's fault

#316 Overwatch, who got in? in Other Games

last I checked, there's some several-million ppl signed up for the beta at the same time (blizzard says 7 million but that's not taking into account multiple emails from the same ppl so ehh)

folks on reddit especially are way too pissy about it, how does anyone expect a company to cater to single randos when there's so many emails to give it out to

#31 cp_gravelpit testing in Map Discussion
lucrativetrashlucrativethere is nothing wrong with how the map was played at all, the map was always played as intended and never broken or flawed under any circumstance, people just don't like the A/D game mode or you would see other A/D maps in the rotation im sure."as intended" was with far more than 12 people, if you haven't forgotten. or would you say this same thing about other giant pub-friendly maps?

intent means little, especially in a game that intended to always have random crits, when this map was made.

this is such a silly argument considering badlands was made under the same circumstances, doesn't really matter that the game is a pub game, gravelpit was played FOREVER in 6v6 and it was completely functional and provided good games, weather you like the map or not it was one of the most balanced maps in 6v6 TF2, but it was removed because no one likes a random A/D map (same reason I think viaduct should be removed, random game modes are retarded, think if CS randomly put in a hostage map to their rotation). no one pushed for it to get out until eMg sucked at it and pushed it out.

a better comparison on my part: if 6s scrimmed nothing but cp_foundry, and everyone hated it, would you then say that this represents 5CP as a format?

there's more ways to potentially try A/D as a format, nobody wants to because they focus on the A/D maps they don't like, and that's a huge shame
