Issue: cannot get preset to change after setting it first time. All graphics options stay at medium when I go into settings to change preset to high/ultra/low.

How come fps_max always caps fps at a value somewhere below the specified value for me? E.g. fps_max 240 gives me a cap of ~233, fps_max 300 gives me around 292, etc. I had to override the default mastercom cap of 240 because of this (I play on 240hz monitor)
Confused by the AA system. I'm using medium high 6.7.0 and want some AA since this preset has none by default -- what console option should I enter to get some AA that won't wreck performance, and should that option go into custom.cfg or could it cause issues there?
'aa' modules don't seem to do anything for me. When I type aa_low into console the game freezes then tabs out for a moment as if it is doing something, but no AA effect is obvious after the fact.
fizzwhizmastercoms, from where did you get the TF2 source code to study?
does not seem like something they would be allowed to answer.
mastercomsHow many times did you run the benchmark? And in what order?
3 times with addon then 3 times without
Big performance loss from SSD addon -- benchmark1.dem 155fps with, 180fps without (samsung 850 evo)

What's your GPU? Also, what is your average fps in 6s during mid battles? I have the same CPU @ 4.4GHz and I pretty much never drop below 200fps.
GPU: R7 260X
don't play competitive, but when playing a cp5 like sunshine with fewer people, framerate seems good (no drop below 144hz). 12v12 is hopeless though.
2500k@4.85
maxperformance.cfg
benchmark1.dem 2639 frames 15.012 seconds 175.79 fps ( 5.69 ms/f) 10.729 fps variability (145fps minimum)
however 12v12 pub on large maps like upward sees fps as low as 90s during intense action
guess there's just no way to keep tf2 at stable 144fps, if mastercom maxperf can't do it, nothing can
maybe I shall cave in and try a binned 5.3ghz 8600k from siliconlottery.com. hehe... seems like a lot of money to spend on getting this rickety old game to run well, though...
