#125 TF2 update for 7/28/16 in TF2 General Discussion
eeethe problem with communication from a dev-to-customer standpoint is that it almost 100% of the time makes the customer more upset than if nothing had been said. Look at any of the 2011-2013 era kickstarters to see what I mean. The rift had a transparent dev process, which meant all the original goals were laid out and discussed with the community. When the goals got pared down into what was feasible, people were mad. When things took too long, people got mad. When things weren't 100% what the dev said they wanted, people got mad. Keeping quiet is attractive to Valve because it keeps them from making promises they can't keep. Saying "we want to make comp MM" and working behind the scenes meant no one went into it with expectations (theoretically at least), which meant valve was more free to follow different ideas and try out what they wanted to do. They're not commenting on viewmodels because 1. they dont have a 100% goal in mind for them except to make them look good in streams and 2. they don't want to say "we think we can work something out" and then have it not be feasible for their end goal because it would make everyone even more pissed than if we just had to get used to viewmodels in MM

there's a bit of a difference because we're getting angered by what valve is actually putting out without explaining it, rather than what they aren't or what they're thinking without publishing anything

CarnNope. Just tried to reset its read-only state, just in case. It still came up with the error.

Does it work if you run CompVMInstaller as admin?

#28 Big "Meet Your Match" survey in TF2 General Discussion
LarryOsmen41Im surprised that half of the people who took this survey said they participated in some form of organized tf2, to be honest it doesnt seem this way while playing MM

most of the bad people playing mm won't see or answer this survey

face2facerunning this under wine on linux seems like it would work fine, but no matter what folder i select it says "invalid TF2 Path!" :( do you think there would be an easy fix for this, or should i just get a friend to make a vpk for me?

It's never going to work on Linux with WINE because TF2 for Linux doesn't ship with the necessary prerequisites that my installer needs - namely, studiomdl.exe. It's part of the Source SDK that only works on Windows, and I doubt studiomdl would run properly in WINE. You could try though. My installer checks to see if the path selected contains studiomdl.exe and vpk.exe in TF2/bin. Additionally those executables require a few of the DLLs from that folder on Windows as well. If you wait until a bit later when I'm home I'll make a zip for you.

VPKs made on a Windows install can be copied to Linux and OS X installs and they'll work just fine.

CarnI'm getting an error with 1.2 where "Select Team Fortress 2" Folder's grayed out, and whenever I try to install the animations, an unhandled exception occurs.
It says the number of entries expected in End Of Central Directory does not correspond to number of entries in Central Directory.

And here's what's output in the details:

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

If you open the registry and go to Current User > Software > CompVMInstaller, what do you find?

mafia_is_mafiawhy work on tf2 which is a bitch to code for when you can work on something hot like VR and make a sexy resume out of?

"I did work for a 9 year old game"
vs
"I helped pioneer new tech for VR"

Twiggyand yet valve reacts to yttrium's job when a "very small" portion of the playerbase cares enough to use it ;)

daily reminder that valve is so angry about my hidden viewmodels and spent so much time trying to get fix them and anger both their casual and comp communities by removing viewmodel animations altogether...

when they still haven't fixed the fucking 120 fov exploit that undeniably gives you a real competitive advantage.

Yeah it still works if you preload. However the animations for unhidden things are a little screwy because they recently changed the animation files. I'll push an update tomorrow that's compatible somewhat, but you're still going to need to preload for Valve servers.

_KermitThe animation goes faster than it should but from what I've seen in a video demonstration the reload time itself doesn't change.

It used to. It still happens on listen servers but I found a way to get it working on regular servers too, but it seems that method was patched in the most recent update (despite not being listed).

WoolenSleeveletI heard that via preloading you can still get this to work (haven't tested its like 2:30am)
Do you reckon this'll lead to leagues banning it because of the reload exploit?

From what I can see preloading doesn't allow the reload thing to happen, which is kind of strange.
