Hello fellow gamers,
Just a quick PSA about how golden caps are supposed to be played in ETF2L.
“Golden Cap” rounds have a time limit of 15 minutes (mp_timelimit 15) and a win limit of 1 round (mp_winlimit 1). If neither team manages to win the round within the time limit, they must play a second “Golden Cap” round. Whoever captures the middle point first is then declared the winner.
So there is no "whoever owns mid at the end of the 15 minutes wins".
This scenario is not very likely to happen but I figured not many people know about this rule so better make this post.
Also, this has been in place for several seasons now and I can recall 1 game where the rule wasn't properly followed (S35 W1 egg vs Ora, Ora ended up getting the point for holding mid after the golden cap).

Has been wrongly handled a couple of times in lower divs the past few season, cant blame anyone for not realizing, this got changed alot of times the past few years on top of being different every other cup basically
Hope we can settle on a final GC End of Time Procedure eventually

what if

:OOOOOOOOOOO

What if golden cap didn't exist in the season and you could just draw on points. You could even go down the Football route and just give both teams a point each for draws and have 1 point disappear, it doesn't really matter. GC in non-playoffs games is fuckin pointless.

If the game is tied at the end of regulation whoever holds mid gets the win. If neither team holds mid a golden cap round is played where whoever captures mid first wins.
There, I just saved us all countless stalemates

Am I insane or didn't that used to be the rule

i thought the goal of tf2 5cp was capturing the 5th point, not holding mid?

I thought you were supposed to utilize heavy boxing to decide.

Obviously ETF2L can do what they want and regular season matches probably don't hold much consequences. But as a ruleset I'm not sure how I feel about it, don't game in EU happen relatively early at like 8pm UK time? Seems a little weird to have these time limits on games that aren't LAN with super limited time.
Also, wouldn't this encourage a team that loses mid on golden cap to stalemate and never push out because they get a free pass to another middle? In ESEA we had no time limit and the longest golden cap I ever saw was a 30 minute one between my team and ascent, where we went back and forth from last to last on badlands until eventually the better team (ascent) won.
TF2 is about winning rounds and a large part of what makes the game interesting is the better team can lose a middle but still win the round by consistently outplaying the other team in team fights and pushes/holds. Middles have a lot of randomness and it seems like it would be so frustrating to play a golden cap for 15 minutes and scrape your way to the enemy last but then have all your progress nullified and end up getting unlucky and losing middle. We don't measure the best teams based off who won more middles, we measure it by who won the most rounds.

I think the time limit was introduced after a 45(?) minute granary overtime during a prem official/play offs game

With the 10 minute gc time-limit it was technically viable to just sit on mid, but with the 15 minutes time-limit that's no longer the case. I don't think it makes much of a difference what the win condition is, as long as there is one.
