(Yes ik I thrashed the Übersaw on countless other platforms, but shut up you cant tell me what to do!)
The extreme risk when using the Übersaw far outweighs the redundant reward. Meleeing as a medic is always a bad idea and you should never do it, regardless if you can or not. If someone ambushes you, fallback to your teammates, pocket someone, and then go after the ambusher. This is far safer as you are no longer putting yourself at direct risk of losing your team the game, but rather an indirect risk that can be controlled far more than if you were to do melee combat. The only exception to this rule is if a cloaked spy bumps into you, but he'll likely be disguised anyways so you won't get the über from the Übersaw if you do hit him, but you will get organs from the Vita-saw since it ignores the disguise.
Meanwhile the über-on-hit is worthless. You already generate über fast enough as a medic with the stock medigun alone, and rest of the mediguns have a boosted über rate. So having the über-on-hit attribute is redundant, especially when you consider how much risk you have to put yourself. And this is assuming that it'll even make a difference in the first place. Look even if you did get 100% über from the übersaw, you won't always be able to use it right away. You could have to actually get to the frontlines, there could be a sentry, or a sniper. By the time you do finally push, you usually would have gotten to 100% über just from your medigun anyways.
By contrast the Amputator and Solemn Vow are far more useful. Increased regen, AoE healing, and/or getting enemy health/über is extremely useful. Amputator is useful when you need to reheal ≥3 players, since that is the threshold when the Crossbow-medigun combo begins to become slower than the Amputator's AoE healing. Yes your teammates can go after health packs, but those aren't reliable healing sources. They are usually far away from the player, take a while to respawn, and don't heal much health unless if you get a full health kit, but that is very rare to find. People bitch that "you die easily while you are taunting because you are still and can get rolled" but it's not that hard to prevent that. Just taunt in good positions and use your gamesense to know when to taunt and you'll be fine. Here's a guide on the Amputator that covers this well. (YouTube link if you like getting tracked.) By the way the Amputator taunt gives über as well, and it can be a lot depending on how many people you heal through the taunt.
As for the Solemn Vow, I'd argue that it's the best medic melee. Being able to see enemy health/über allows you to make informed decisions that won't fail unexpectedly as much as if you guessed the enemy info and made decisions off of that. Approximations of health/über are not perfect, as there is a chance of interference from Crossbow shots, health kits, regen, etc. Even if they were perfect, it's extremely hard to track the health/über of all enemies, let alone one enemy, so having an item that takes the load off health/über tracking is useful. This of course is mainly useful in comp, but it still can be useful in Casual.
Both the Amputator and Solemn Vow's abilities are extremely useful and all they need is just some player interaction through right clicking or looking at an enemy. Uncertain about Vita-saw as I haven't used that weapon enough, but from what I can gather it still has some use if you ever get constantly rolled and you can get melee hits commonly through cloaked spies. By contrast the Übersaw requires environmental factors that are out of your control and require you to put yourself at extreme risk, just to use an ability that is honestly pretty redundant. The Übersaw taunt isn't that useful either, as it's easy to spot just from the medic's voiceline alone. While that can be masked, the enemy can still easily kill you, since it's a taunt. It doesn't help that the melee hit detection in TF2 is fucking awful, and your accuracy will never be 100%. The passive benefits from the Amputator and Solemn Vow are far more useful than the passive benefits from the Übersaw and Vita-saw, just as how the common need for the Amputator and Solemn Vow outperforms the rare need for the Übersaw and Vita-saw.
This is just my opinion though. You can use whatever medic melee you want.

Ubersaw - yes, u should probably run solemn vow but there is still clutch potential for last holds. and ive been scrimming teams that are playing invite next season and people still beef their shots on me so i can get ubersaws. and i dont know about lower divisions but in higher divisions, people dont look at me sometimes because im not the threat in some fights. if they dont kill the scout next to me, they die. this leaves their back to me sometimes for a free saw. it's not extremely common but it happens more times then moments where an amputator taunt is better then arrowing ur teammates.
Amputator - i think u completely wrong about this. i would much rather arrow my 3 teammates instead of taunting. i want to be control my character at all times. and because tf2 is so fast, i want to be able to move. this melee weapon is far worse then all the others
Solemn Vow - everything u said about it is true. it's probably the best melee weapon now, but i wouldn't say ubersaw overrated trash
Vitasaw - it is banned for a reason because it is overpowered in comp play. people use the "if the enemy medic is running it, ur own medic must run it too". that quote is way more true with the vitasaw. EDIT - it's not banned, but vitasaw is garbage, -10 hp is bad in every way possible.

Clutches rarely ever happen though. Besides just because a weapon can clutch you a win, doesn't mean the weapon is good. Most of the time the enemy is just going to stay out of melee range, which is not that hard, and is easier to do than most people think. Even if they couldn't they could use their gun or just killbind.
phoroforand i dont know about lower divisions but in higher divisions, people dont look at me sometimes because im not the threat in some fights. if they dont kill the scout next to me, they die. this leaves their back to me sometimes for a free saw.
The scout must be a fucking idiot then. Just stay away from the medic's melee range and you'll be fine.
phorofor it's not extremely common but it happens more times then moments where an amputator taunt is better then arrowing ur teammates.
That might be a placebo effect because of the players you are playing with, and not necessarily due to the circumstances of common events.
phoroforAmputator - i think u completely wrong about this. i would much rather arrow my 3 teammates instead of taunting. i want to be control my character at all times. and because tf2 is so fast, i want to be able to move. this melee weapon is far worse then all the others
How exactly is this weapon "far worse"? In competitive I agree there due to the lack of players nearby. The only use the taunt has is in HL while capping a point to reheal your team quicker. In casual though? Taunt healing 4 players is going to be faster than Crossbow-Medigun healing them, even if they are all scouts. Actually that statement seems quite opinionated without any basis. Let's do some math for actual evidence:
Crossbow-Medigun health output formula: (medigun healing rate * (crossbow reload time * amount of shots)) + (crossbow heal on hit * amount of shots) = (total healing output)
We can solve for the amount of shots, which in turn can get us how long it takes to output the healing output. Lets say that you needed to heal 4 scouts all from 1hp to full health. The medigun healing rate is 72/s (aka the crit heal rate), the Crossbow will heal the max at 150hp all the time, and the Crossbow reload rate is 1.6 seconds. We can solve for the amount of shots. using this information.
x = amount of shots
(72hp * (1.6s * x)) + (150hp * x) = 500hp
115.2x + 150x = 500hp
265.2x = 500hp
x = 1.88
Now if we multiply x by the Crossbow reload rate, we get that it would take 3 seconds to fully heal the scouts which is faster than the Amputator taunt. That of course is assuming you always have crit heals and that the Crossbow always healed 150hp, which is unrealistic. Doing this again but in a more realistic fashion with the noncrit heal rate of the medigun and the mean heal rate of the Crossbow, we get:
(24hp * (1.6s * x)) + (112.5 * x) = 500hp
38.4x + 112.5 = 500hp
150.9x = 500hp
x = 3.31
3.31 * 1.6s (the Crossbow reload rate) = 5.3 seconds
Now the Amputator heals for a total of 105hp by default and 315hp with crit heals. Remember though that the Amputator heals all players in its radius simultaneously, so it actually heals the 4 scouts faster than the Crossbow-Medigun combo. All of that math of course is discounting the weapon switch speed and the slowness of the human medic player. That is also assuming that the medic is using the stock medigun.

Übersaw may not be trash from a reasonable perspective, but it is definitely overrated imo. Just look at the reddit posts on r/tf2 and r/truetf2 about it saying that "It NeeDs tO geT NeRfEd" when A it doesn't, and B most of the presented changes are fucking terrible. The Übersaw is more like the actual default melee for the medic, than it is the "BeSt mEleE of ALl TiMe!"

it's not a placebo because that's how 6s is played. it's very fast paced and u must be on the move at all times. (unless stalemates ofcourse).

did you just try to tell an invite medic that he wasn't including proper context because he wasn't taking into account a 12v12 game lol
I love theorycrafting in tf2 more than most but putting so much effort into optimizing pub play is like getting someone with a master of fine arts degree to go to a preschool and critique the kids' fingerpainting

ye vitasaw is like ubersaw now in which each hit lets u retain 15% of ur current uber % up to 4 hits for a max of 60%. only issue is that ur not getting 4 saws ever and u also lose 10 max hp so u kinda die easier.

solemn vow is by far the best medic melee in comp 6s and it just isnt utilised effectively by most
ubersaw is much worse but still viable when youre holding last with disad
the ability to see the other medics uber % is ridiculous and i dont think it should be on the whitelist, also gives medic the ability to focus call better than any other class in team fights

ubersaw is much worse but still viable when youre holding last with disad

AimIsADickWell no duh sherlock! I forgot to mention it here, but yeah the Amputator is useless in 6s due to having only 2 people near you at most. I say that all the time in other posts; I just forgot to mention it here.

MakemakeAimIsADickalfaphoroforit's not a placebo because that's how 6s is played. it's very fast paced and u must be on the move at all times. (unless stalemates ofcourse).
i didn't know u were referring to pubbing with the amputator. i dont know anything about competitive pubbing. also, ur posting on a competitive tf2 forum so i assumed u were talking about 6s or at the very least hl
and i also didn't know vitasaw is unbanned. this is news to me.
yea what the FUCK could you possibly know about medic, you haven't even won a 12v12 match yet retard

why are you talking about pubs on a 6v6 competitive forum
Because I have to say what gamemode the Amputator works well in and what doesn't?

the taunt isnt the amputator's only feature lol (the taunt is its most useless feature in fact)

if youre on medic in 6s and you only have "at most" 2 teammates near you its because your team is dogshit, which is not an amputator problem, its a team skill level problem
