Well since SPUF couldn't help me(what a surprise...) I decided to try it here:

Hello SPUF Guys,
well after months of trying to find a solution I finally give up and hope you fellow people can help me.
I have massive fps drops ingame. I get like 264(my fps_max) in spawn but only 55-60 when I'm in a fight. I can not accept that because I own a 120Hz monitor (originally bought it for quake/UT) and I wanna make full use of it so I'd like to have atleast 120fps.

my system:
•AMD Phenom II x4 945 3GHz
•4gig RAM
•ATI HD 4800 series (I think it's a 4890)
If you need anything else just ask.

Some facts:

•I use chris dx9 config (the maxframes just gave me ~5fps+ or sth)
•I use the particles pack from this site
. It doesn't really give me a bonus + I can't use it on sv_pure 2 so it's negligible
•I've set my LOD to +7 with ATI Tray tools
•I've tweaked my anti-virus according to this thread
•my launch options are: -full -w 1920 -h 1080 -console -novid -useforcedmparms -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd -nocrashdialog -nojoy -noipx -nocdaudio -high -heapsize 2097152 -freq 120
•I've set my windows 7 settings to optimal performance
•I've updated my driver, defragged my system/tf2 folders etc.

I post this here because I spoke with some of my friends and they said that my system should get 100fps min with these settings...

It looks like from your options that you have fullscreen on, but just make sure that when you get into your game that it is, in fact, full screen. That usually saves me many frames.

I tried that but lowering my res doesn't give me +fps

I already said that max and dx9frames are basically the same for me ( maxframes gives me about 5fps more...)

The game is broken, valve releases update after update with nothing but new cosmetics, none of them with a single bit of performance optimization. You seem to have done enough, but 120fps is unlikely to happen for you in fights with a 4890 nowadays.

I own a 660Ti and get 150fps in some mid fights. I owned a 570 before and was getting more fps tho, I think this current nvidia generation isn't really optimized for source engine games (570 peaked 2000 fps in some maps, 180fps in mid fights). Also, source engine is very cpu bounded.

Did you already try backing up your configs/hud/demos/other things, and then delete the "team fortress 2" folder in /steamapps? I don't think you'll have to re download the whole game, it should just extract a fresh copy from the GCFs.

EDIT: As others will probably say, TF2/Source is most likely bottlenecked by your CPU if a fresh copy doesn't perform like it should. You could try overclocking your CPU if you're comfortable doing so, it should be rather easy with an unlocked Phenom.

Mh I could try deleting my team fortress 2 folder. Also I think my pc could easily overheat if I tried to overclock my CPU because it already is like 60degrees when I play tf2 + I have no clue how to overclock something. I should probably try it/read about it tomorrow.

your CPU is bottlenecking you

i have a considerably worse GPU (9800GTX) and maintain 240 fps constant with an i5 2500k @ 4.6 GHz

"only 55-60 when I'm in a fight" My average FPS in a fight is like 30. When there are like more than 4 people, it goes to like 20.

Well I tried overclocking my CPU to 3300MHz(like I said I'm new to this so I don't want to do 3500+ like someone said right away.) today and I get 70-80fps in heavy fights now :) The only thing I have to test is if my CPU runs smooth for several hours when I play. Lets test this ^-^

i had a 940x4, only difference from my cpu to yours is the am3+ socket that supports DDR3. It was OC'ed to 3.5 and I'd still get around the same fps as you.

It's just a slow cpu, there's nothing you can do to fix this aside from asking valve to remove useless shit or purchasing new hardware.

btw, if you're already hitting 60c load with stock clocks, you don't have much room to OC at all.

jp_btw, if you're already hitting 60c load with stock clocks, you don't have much room to OC at all.

Well as I said I OC'd to 3.3GHz and I haven't noticed a huge temp difference(maybe 3-4 degrees)

Anyways what's the "temp limit" for a CPU?

EDIT: @Enigma: A i5 2500k with 4.6 GHz? Wow. I thought they only have 3.3-3.7 GHz. How did you manage to overclock it that much?

EDIT²: For how much could I get a pc that can handle tf2 with lets say 150fps(or even 240 *-*) with dx9 frames/highframes/without a fps config?

Get a new mb with the new i5 or a better heatsink so you can overclock more. AMD's are notorious for running hot. Switching to intel was the best thing I did.

So I finally decided to save up for a new pc :>

CPU: Intel Core i5 Intel Core i5-3570K
CPU-cooler: Thermalright True Spirit 120
Mainboard: Z75 Chipsatz ASRock Z75 Pro3
RAM: 8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9
GPU: GTX 670 2GB EVGA GeForce GTX 670
Hard drive: 1000GB, 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda EcoGreen F3 1000GB
SDD: 128GB SSD Samsung SSD 830 128GB
disk drives: DVD Brenner LiteOn iHAS122
case: Lancool PC-K58
power supply: Antec HCG-520 520W
+ A random W-LAN card.

This PC should be able to run TF2 with more than 150fps right? :3 I also thought about replacing the GTX 670 with a HD7950. Any thoughts on that?

Why a WLAN card, I'd hope you wouldn't need to use it on a desktop...

It's definitely better than my computer, which runs around 100fps while streaming with Chris's Highframes FPS config.

Well I use WLAN for about 5years now... I should get LAN in about 3-5months but until this glory day I am forced to use a WLAN card.

Sounds good :> Does anyone else got a comparable system? And if yes, how much fps do you get while gaming? Also should I consider overclocking the rig or will it be enough for tf2 without that?

I have a 2500k also, sad part is that I'm stuck with a mobo that can't overclock for now, I don't cap my fps and it is usually 600+, but there are times it goes down to 170 (never noticed anything below), with a 660ti. I knew source engine was strongly cpu-bounded, but never to such extent.

Take off -high and -heapsize from your launch option and look into overclocking your CPU. There's plenty of guides you can google for your CPU to get you started. You should be able to get a bit over the 3.5 you mentioned. Don't worry too much about overclocking. As long as you can follow a reputable guide and can realize what you should be doing from it, than it's pretty hard to damage your hardware.

Other than that, there isn't much that would be holding you back. I could get a constant 132 back when I had a core 2 duo @ 4GHz about a year ago.
