Why does it seem this resolution is so popular among the most experienced players ? I´ve tried for a bit it makes the game look a bit smoother, other than that i see no difference.
I heard someone say it makes the models look bigger....´
Can anyone care to explain ?
Thanks !

seasoned gamers are used to using lower res as they were used back in the day of quake and such
probably attempting to get decent fps in this game
For various reasons. Many "experienced players" got their start in the era of 4:3 (and maybe even 5:4, for that matter), so it's a resolution they've become comfortable to. It does turn down FOV, but some say that it helps with concentration/focusing. Haven't really heard of the models looking bigger, though. In the end, however, like most things, it all just comes down to preference.
This is just the monitor I have. I used other monitors at friends houses and such playing TF2 and I never really noticed anything different between the different resolutions.
i felt so blind playing on this res compared to 1920x1080
yeah i knoow about crt´s and lower fov but i see many people using this on tft´s
I don't know why, but the konr wings look so much better in 1024x768 for me.
I know in CS 1.6 playing at 800x600 made the models appear slightly bigger and easier to make pixel perfect shots. But yeah, everyone said it already lower the resolution, more fps and easier it is to get 120hz.
I've been stuck on 1024x768 for a few months because my monitor broke and I decided to cheap out by using an old spare I had in my attic instead of buying a new one.
It sucks, I miss my 90 degree fov.

I had the acer 120hz for a while. But I went back to my CRT because the input lag is awful.
SeaCowi like the bigger models
You clearly don't know how fov works.
Unless you switched monitors from 16:9 to 4:3 (both same ") just to use 1024*768 the models will be exactly the same size.

If you stretch a 4:3 res on a 16:9 monitor, the models will be slightly wider.
If you're using 4:3 resolution the FOV will be smaller than 16:9 / 16:10, making your view look like it's zoomed in which will make player models "bigger".

On a 16:9 / 16:10 monitor.
Going from a 16:9 / 16:10 monitor to a 4:3 monitor, the resolution change does nothing besides show you less and possibly screw up HUDs (like any resolution change).

- Game runs faster (less demanding on hardware so more FPS).
- Possibility of higher refresh rates (on CRT monitors and even some LCD) making game smoother.
- Old school preference (some people like the stretched view playing with 4:3 on a widescreen monitor).
I don't use a low resolution anymore as it just looks horrible on the larger monitors we have today, but having ridiculously high FPS is one of my priorities in a gaming setup. Luckily TF2 is quite old so my average hardware is always around the 300fps mark anyway, but playing other games like Battlefield, I'm very tempted to drop the res to get the smoothness.

Yes, everything will be stretched wider. If someone wants to see how it looks just watch kaidus' stream.
mousiopeany actual proof of that ?

Vertical fov stays the same, fov per pixel, fov per inch, etc. stays the same. It basically looks like someone cut off a bit of your screen on the sides compared to 16:9.

No, because of the black bars you get on the left and right side a 16:9/16:10 used in 4:3 has effectively a smaller size than a 4:3 monitor with them same ". Even when used in 16:9/16:10 the models will stay the same size. Therefore the models are actually a bit larger on the 4:3 monitor irl. That might be a part of how the myth "4:3 gives you bigger models" was created.
