I've found myself becoming too dependent on my scattergun due to playing MGE. So I made a silly script that effectively limits my scattergun to 3 shots to force me to use the pistol more. Might as well share it:
alias +stuttergun +stuttergun1
alias -stuttergun -stuttergun1
alias +stuttergun1 "+attack"
alias -stuttergun1 "-attack; alias +stuttergun +stuttergun2; alias -stuttergun -stuttergun2"
alias +stuttergun2 "+attack"
alias -stuttergun2 "-attack; alias +stuttergun +stuttergun3; alias -stuttergun -stuttergun3"
alias +stuttergun3 "+attack"
alias -stuttergun3 "-attack; alias +stuttergun "echo nope"; alias -stuttergun "echo pistol?""
bind q fluentpistol
alias fluentpistol " weapon2; bind q stuttergun; bind mouse1 +attack;"
alias stuttergun "-attack; weapon1; bind q fluentpistol; alias +stuttergun +stuttergun1; alias -stuttergun -stuttergun1; bind mouse1 +stuttergun"
alias restorescatter "bind mouse1 +attack; bind q lastweapon; alias +stuttergun +attack; alias -stuttergun -attack;"
replace "weapon2" and "weapon1" with "slot2" and "slot1" respectively if you do not use broesel's crosshair switcher

I've found that if you click out every pistol shot instead of just holding down attack, it helps me actually hit my targets.

Why would you punish yourself of using Scattergun too much? Pistol is a silly weapon that should rarely be used, being dependent on Scattergun is better than what you want.

The pistol is amazing. Odds are, however, that if you are killing fully buffed scouts in 6 or less shots every time, you don't need a pistol.

edit: i read that again, and i do agree with you however. the pistol shouldn't be used because imo in hinders scattergun aim

It's not a script intended to improve MGE performance. It's to reduce the dependency/habit formed by playing MGE. Sticking to scatter all of the time seems to work most of the time in MGE at my skill level but it doesn't translate to 6v6 at all because you don't enter into every fight with everything fully loaded.

i would prefer to hit my shots and not miss them when my crosshair was on their torso. fuck pistol spread
If you are aiming well, you will hit almost every pistol shot from medium range, and every shot from close range. People over exaggerate the spread constantly. If you don't believe me, slow your demos down to 20% and you'll notice you're not on the center of their model when you miss.

I think it's good to practice pistol. Mastering the scout class includes having a very well aim and use of each of it's weapons. That includes the pistol definitely. There are some situations where you might need it, it might be the thing that changes a midfight if you're the last one alive vs their other last one alive. By practicing pistol and as well as scatter, you get better at aiming in general which definitely is good.
Think of it like this:
1v1 Midfight vs their scout as the last ones at a midfight
Both of you guys have about maybe 40hp, and you're low on scattergun shots while the enemy may have more. But with the pistol, you can efficiently take down the enemy in a few shots that the scattergun may not be able to ensure a good one shot and at the speed it's going, while the pistol shots go faster.
Something like that, it could also be a mid-long range fight also.
EDIT: Also what thorn said.

As long as you can kill stuff, it's fine. There is no one forcing you to use the pistol. But thanks for the script, it seems like a pretty cool way to practice ^_^

pistol is literally just tracking i dont see how you can be THAT bad at it compared to your scatter

i need one of these that limits my both my scattergun and pistol. this is because i feel i have come to rely too much on them and need to improve my bat aim. one day i will bat as well as the infamous clockwork.

but pistol is more useful in mge than it is 6v6, I would think that mge would form the habit of using pistol TOO much

THIS! I developed a habit of pistoling (and actually got pretty good at it) because in MGE I would just fire my six scattergun shots and switch to pistol regardless of how many scattershots I actually hit.

i agree with this. though because of the way i aim a scattergun my pistol is inherently good. maybe that's because i practiced pistol aim from wasting scattergun so hard when i first started playing lol
really though the pistol is only a good idea in so little situations compared to the scattergun i would use the pistol as little as possible in a real match

tracking in tf2 is rly hard compared to other games, everyone has a high acceleration and high friction, especially compared to quake where everyone accelerates like a pyro and the friction is low as hell
i have bad tracking but my scattergun's a lot worse than my pistol cuz I can't line up my shots :(
sometimes I wonder if it's because of my crappy monitor with a possibly very high input lag, but i ~do~ do really well at times so it makes me feel flakey

The biggest reason tracking is so difficult in tf2 is due to the art style and the way the in-game models jut/stutter around when you mash movement buttons; especially in comparison to the actual hitboxes of each player
