Preview Lag

So I'm trying to be professional video editing man (Sony Vegas 11)and I'm running into a bit of an issue with the preview window lagging exponentially. My computer is fairly good I'd say, I can run most video games on high settings without any noticeable lag. I've tried to pre-render the clips I put into the program but for some reason it stops only a few seconds into the clip.

Any advice for someone who can't edit without the preview?

What resolution and how long is your video? What quality is your preview set to? How much memory does vegas get?

High priority?
Closing background programs?
Turning off useless background services?
Disabling unnecessary Windows features?

Do you have an OpenCL capable device? Try enabling gpu acceleration (sony).

Is it really a video or image sequence? Is it just in an avi container as uncompressed RGB? Decoding speed for uncompressed RGB is slower than using a lossless codec like lagarith/UT Video.

I'll try the first one and see how it works out. It is a video, and I compressed it using virtual dub with the codec x264/H.264 (I don't know the difference between these two terms)

Are you limited in disk space? I wouldn't use x264 (especially it's vfw variant) as an intermediate format. Encode to Lagarith. Or don't encode at all and just import the image sequence.

x264 is cpu intensive to decode, it's probably exacerbated with an NLE. Though I think your resolution shouldn't cause decoding issues.

I read from google searches that sony vegas cannot work with x264 in an AVI container. It's recommended to use Virtualdub 1.10.x's external encoder (x264+NeroAcc>mp4box) or Handbreak to pack the video into compatible mpeg-4 container.

Right clip on the clip, disable sampling, turn preview quality down too

Personally my laptop and computer are not the strongest machines either when it comes to video editing, but you can turn down the preview quality which reduces the lag quite a bit.
If I want to sync something correctly i use my arrow keys to go through the footage, and just watch it frame by frame. I feel like playing the footage in preview is not always fully in sync with the real audio-video but when i look at it by skipping frames manually it's easier to see.

You can always highlight the part you want to preview then hit space to do a ram preview. It's slow but it should be very smooth.
