When i played in newbie mixs it was actually the complete opposite. The coaches helped me and the experienced were very polite and helped. Maybe it was a one time thing or one single person, but i don't think there are bad admins. And why are you posting for your friend?

I agree, made a post before the newbiemixes today with a similar flavor.

Although, tonight I had a great group of n00bs. Could be that I asked the admin to give me the most inexperienced group he could. Ended up being a 2-3 on process.

I could tell this was going to be a negative thread when there was punctuation in the title.

First team I was on had a coach talking about how tired he was, and he admitted he shouldn't have started coaching our game. Good start. There were no comms and everyone was still talking about irrelevant things for the entire first round, with a pyro to mid, our team had much worse DM (including me), and the only thing the coach mentioned was having shit comms after we got rolled.

Second team was great though with a different coach and different players entirely, even on a more unfamiliar class. Real criticism and advice, pauses between every round for both teams to hear what they did right and wrong, etc. Despite this being my second game of 6v6 ever, I somehow got a ridiculous amount of kills on roamer without really trying to chase after them, due to differences in skill level or team cohesion, and the coach only had a couple things to say about my play while in spectator.

Spending three and a half hours for two matches and a little bit of a random DM server was probably not worth it, and I'd rather just play a full season in UGC than do this again, I think. Not feeling like I learned a single thing or got any better at the game, but it was certainly an experience.

Edit: All that said, this could be a great thing, but my only two experiences were.. not so great. One coach was pretty negative, and being the only person to actually try communicating a single thing made me feel like a tryhard on my very first game. Even when I performed well it wasn't because I had amazing timing or anything, it was more just because the other team didn't punish me for my mistakes. A 35~ - 7 kill/death is nice and all as a roaming soldier but not satisfying if I don't come away with any knowledge from it.

Last friday zbryan showed a bunch of newer players demo/roamer rollouts on most of the maps, they seemed to really appreciate it.

Dunno, I just finished my first season of UGC, and go to newbie mixes in order to possibly get a bit of advice. It is a lot easier than getting a mentor.

As head admin, my goal is to please everyone, which increases in difficulty as Newbie Mixes begin to expand and become more popular.

Phobia, may you please elaborate on how there were too many experienced players and very bad admins? I can only help you if you give me all the details. May I also ask how come your friend didn't post himself or report any of this to the Newbie Mix staff?

Although, tonight I had a great group of n00bs. Could be that I asked the admin to give me the most inexperienced group he could. Ended up being a 2-3 on process.

To address the issue of people just coming to play, and not being a Genuine Newbie: That is one of the reasons we created Newbie Pugs. Even though that option of just playing is there, many still remain in Newbie Mixes. They are somewhat genuine because they want to know how to get better at TF2, and also it's an opportunity to meet invite level players such as Ruwin, zbryan, thefragile, eldritch, etc...

Licor -snip-

I apologize on behalf the Newbie Mix staff for your unpleasant experiences in your first Newbie Mixes. As well, if you were unpleased with the amount of playtime you got, I recommend after 2 games to go participate in the pugs and use the advice that was given to you from prior coaches.

Please remember, if there is a coach that isn't doing his part, or a newbie running pyro to mid, and anything that isn't normal: Please report to someone in the Newbie Mix staff. If an admin wasn't being helpful or rude, report to me directly. We are very busy during the event and cannot be in the game making sure everyone is doing their part.

SneakyPolarBearLast friday zbryan showed a bunch of newer players demo/roamer rollouts on most of the maps, they seemed to really appreciate it.

We will be doing a separated event from Newbie Mixes in the future that was very similar to the format we did two saturdays ago. Look out for it in the future; There'll be a thread on here regarding it soon

If you feel I did not properly address the issues stated above, either message me on steam or respond in this thread.

As a final note: I cannot stress how important it is to report anything out of the ordinary whether it be coaches or newbies not fulfilling their role

When I played newbie mixes It helped me alot. Especially playing with some more experienced players on my team, and the enemy team. Because you can look at the players that actually know what they're doing, and aslong as they're friendly it can work out.

But I feel that you are right, newbie mixes should be restricted to newbie players and coaches that actually want to help out.

I'd like to say that I really enjoyed newbie mixes last night. I played a class where I honestly had no idea what to do, but my coach (Screwball) really taught me a lot. The other coaches I've had in the past weren't nearly as comprehensive as he was.

Licorstuff

Hey, I played against you in that mix (demo on the other side). Why were you running a pyro to mid? It confused everyone and I'm pretty sure that's a bannable offense in newbie mixes.

It was his first time playing 6v6 and he thought that you could offclass to mid. When our coach (Mr_Perfect) asked if anyone had questions, the person in particular didn't speak up. And as a result when the round started we had a pyro to mid. Just a genuine misunderstanding (it wasn't licor btw).

i think i playing in both of your mixes licor, as demoman?

Every week we get more and more Newbies and not enough coaches to go around. Last night in particular, we only had 3-4 Coaches at any given time, we also had 2 Admins (Shredder and myself) and a beginner admin who had no previous experience in drafting, admining, etc.

The Newbie Mix Admins are very thankful for all of those coaches who are willing to come help out with those of you who want to learn about competitive TF2, recently we have been getting some very high level coaches that have come to help out, a big thanks to Zbryan and other coaches that have been regulars to Newbie Mixes.

To answer other concerns on this forums such as experienced players coming in and doing really well against the newer players, we can't always control this. Some players of higher skill level find it enjoyable to alias and play against people who are trying to learn basic mechanics of competitive. We have tried to combat this by introducing Newbie Pugs, but I do not know if we had an active admin patrolling that channel and getting these pugs started and running smoothly.

tldr
Sometimes we must resort to admins coaching when there are not enough coaches. Big thanks to all the coaches that have been coming out and to Zbryan in particular, hes been very helpful to all the Newbies. Some players of higher skill level do come in and play Newbie Mixes under aliases, we do not endorse this and have tried to combat this with Newbie Pugs, but this has not worked.

Like Connor said, I think we had all the proper classes in pregame, and nobody noticed anything was off, until a scout switched to pyro and walked out of the spawn shutter like that. Plenty of "what the hell?" during our rollout, when it was explained to him that just because scouts offclass more than other people, doesn't mean you're supposed to do it for no reason. He was just new and playing the first round of his first game like that.

I'm also just going to guess that Screwball was telling your scouts to push or get a pick constantly considering I had the worst DM and was alone on flank the whole time.

JCONNORi think i playing in both of your mixes licor, as demoman?

Yep, I was being fairly quiet before any matches and between them though, just waiting for the games to start. The one where I remember you on demo was actually a much nicer game, but I suspect not for the other team.

EVERYTIME I coached in Newbie mixes U were there playing, I even told U many times U don't even need to play in newbie mixes but U kept on playing.
EVERYTIME U were on the team I coached U were bragging about how good your KD is and how bad the opposing team is.
EVERYTIME I gave out tips you ended up arguing about how correct your playstyle is
EVERYTIME I asked people to stay after the game to point out stuff and give advice U left to get dragged into another pug right away.

If I remember correctly U kept giving out wrongfull advices to the newbies as if you were coaching and kept on doing remark like "Is roody our coach""NAAAHHHH you're not our coach you're kidding" "why is roody a coach"

I have to say I've learned so much through newbie mixes that the good outweighs the bad any day.
- Learnt tonnes of things from Pie_hero, who IMO gets coach of the year, hope he comes back to coach some time.
- Also gained a lot of insight from coaches like Zbryan, b4nny, and even PYOUR. (Note for other newbies, just because you're not playing doesn't mean you can't mute yourself in their mumble and spec the game)

I'm sure your friend got unlucky with the draw or simply joined newbie pugs which have no coaching and are meant for the more experienced members.
