Mumble and you.

So lately I've been trying out this mumble thing but I noticed it's quite distracting when I want to play a bit seriously.

I understand communication is important during matches and whatnot, but for things like mge or dm or practice of any sort - is mumble distracting for you? Or do you enjoy it? Was it different when you first started out? Etc.

I know a lot people here use it on a daily basis, I'm curious how you deal with it.

I find if quite boring just MGEing of DMing without anyone to talk to. Plus I think it's realistic to be able to DM well and talk at the same time.

I'm usually in Mumble only during scrims/matches/pugs, and sometimes a little bit after.

I don't hang out in Mumble a lot though. I prefer my quiet time.

People typically use mumble to augment their communication when playing together (i.e. as a team) or as a way to hang out in a channel. I never leave it on if I'm just MGEing or DMing - you can always just mute/deafen yourself if you find it distracting.

Do you have your push-to-talk key bound to somewhere that painful? Or are you having trouble talking and playing at the same time?

ShroomsyDo you have your push-to-talk key bound to somewhere that painful? Or are you having trouble talking and playing at the same time?

Nah I'm just asking what preferences people have for mumble while practicing. It was supposed to be more of a general survey.

MeematI never leave it on if I'm just MGEing or DMing - you can always just mute/deafen yourself if you find it distracting.

Thanks for actually answering the question. Why don't you use it during mge/dm? That's what I was getting at.

because there is no channel your opponent sits in relative to the arena in some mge coupled mumble server or something, so who are you talking to?

come to think of it that would be a funny idea

It's not really distracting for me, but it can cause problems, as my Mumble push-to-talk is set to V, meaning I have to move my fingers to the V key, forcing them not to be able to use several other keys.

I do have a mouse that has programmable buttons that I've just been to lazy to switch my push-to-talk to.

Could be with friends or team mates or people you might know. I'm just asking if you prefer talking/listening to people while trying to practice. I usually just put on music.

when i mge friends we don't really read books to eachother, just random game chatter from when i'm getting anally blasted. words don't work with mge, they require focus and you're too busy focusing on not getting aced. people like to listen to music with a lot of groove and little/no lyrics when they play -- check out streams for an idea. ideally you'll want to be comfortable enough with the game that discussion won't throw you off-balance -- mge/dm shouldn't be a nervewracking thing to do either. if/when you get a team you'll be put on the spot a lot for comms while playing so get used to a little bit of talk.

My Mumble autostarts and joins my team's server every time my pc starts. If I don't have my friends talking to me, I won't play videogames.

i actually do get distracted if i'm in mumble while playing mge, but not dm

but i think it's more the fact that the mumble servers i'm in are usually loud and active, so it's a bit hard to concentrate when someone is groaning, grunting, or moaning very loudly because they are going crazy over something happening on a fighting game stream or in their online smash 64 game @_@

i focus in mge differently from when i'm playing in dm or in pubs/pugs/scrims/matches lol

I've gone to using mumble to talk to IRL friends lol. It's soo much easier and better than skype for what I use it for.

I generally always have it on, and find that it doesn't bother me at all, I even have it on when I'm playing single player games lol. Although I've yet to go full crazy and have multiple mumbles set up with multiple keys to talk to tons of people at once.

I use a foot pedal for push to talk. I used to have to interrupt myself whenever I needed to do a rocket jump, but a foot pedal makes that problem go away.

You mind linking the one you use? I got a really crappy one a while ago and it broke within a month.

If I didn't have a Mumble server I wouldn't be able to cherrypick the best players for my teams.

#27: the pedal I use is just some random electronic keyboard sustain pedal with a 1/4" audio jack, probably not more than $20 from a local music store. I've had it for years plugged into an electronic keyboard, so it is a solid pedal, but recently I acquired a weird mouse that happens to have a 1/8" jack in it, so I got an appropriate adapter and plugged the pedal into said weird mouse. When I press the pedal, it registers as MOUSE4. If you have such a pedal but no weird mouse like I do, you could try a 3.5mm (1/8") audio to USB converter, but I don't know if that will work, or what button it will show up as. I have seen fairly cheap USB foot pedals around online, but have never used one. If the quality on those are unreliable, both Fragpedal and Stealth Switch are more reputable but rather expensive options, probably overkill unless you are serious about including your feet into your everyday computer use.
