I love it. I think hes changed a lot, but not really for the worse. Definitely not disappointing so far, but I know a lot of people that really dislike this song. I still think Marshall Mathers LP is possibly his best album ever.

I feel like a lot of people are missing the point of Berzerk, or at least not catching everything that went into it. I'm going to steal a post I saw a while ago since he explained it really well.

SomeNerdThis song is basically a journey through the history of hip-hop. It starts with Beastie Boys samples and Em imitating MCA(?)'s distinctive vocal style.

The second verse includes flashes of him imitating the styles of Jay-Z, Snoop Lion and Kid Rock.

The third verse includes a Nicki Minaj bit, the obvious Future bit and the #car-note line which is an example of recently popularized 'hashtag rap'.

These are just examples of what I could find. I'm sure there are others hidden in there that people with more hip-hop acumen can find. Pretty interesting stuff for a song that everyone seems to be writing off as just a 'fun single'.

It actually reminds me of the first time listening to a Girl Talk album. You spend the first few listens not really knowing wtf is going on, then the next bunch finding all the samples and sound effects and then eventually it coalesces into a coherent song. In this case you also need to spend a bunch of listens on Em's lyrics (which by the way there is a bunch of awesome word play - go read the lyrics!).

Check the video's style as well when listening for these references. There's a lot of nice touches.

frowny so once you've heard 2/3 of his songs, you've basically heard them all.

I mean when you've heard of 67% you have heard the most, that goes for everyone not just eminem

brownymasterfrownyI used to be a fan of Eminem myself and I'll be the first to concede that he's made some good music in the past, but he's way past his prime and should start his long overdue retirement instead of grasping at straws for another 30 seconds in the limelight.frownyAh, I can see why people get their panties in a bunch about that. Well to each their own I guess, just go back to listening to Lil' Wayne or whatever then. ;PYou really don't realize how much of a hipster you are, do you.

I did realize how much of a faggot I sounded aand that's why I removed the Lil Wayne part, my point still stands though.

Excuse the double post. This may sound snobbish and pretentious as fuck, but to me at least hip hop and rap are 2 different genres of music. Hip hop refers to the classics, like some of the ones I mentioned earlier (e.g. Jurassic 5, Gang Starr etc.) Rap is the "chewing gum" you hear on the radio, all your Lily's Waynes, Eminems, Jay-Zs etc. (that said, Jay-Zs older stuff is fantastic). Again, this is only my opinion and I understand if people disagree as music is all personal preference but that's how I see it anyway.

Yes, I realise I sound like a bellend, thanks for asking.

idk why you assume the people arguing with you are doing so because they listen solely to wayne and jay-z and whatever. there is a wealth of music that falls under the genres hip hop or rap and trying to pigeon hole the dudes on the other side of the argument into being Weezy Fans just because they oppose your view is very weird.

I'm not trying to "pigeon hole" anyone, I concede that "proper" was the wrong word to use and I'm trying to explain what I meant by it. Also, I'm not against rap or the people who listen to it, I just said that I prefer another genre of music, if the words "my opinion" in every post didn't tip you off then I'm sorry I didn't make them bold and underlined.

Then you probably shouldn't have come to this thread and should stop posting in it. You went to a thread that wasn't to your tastes and continually try to talk about the bad points of the genre. You're intentionally trying to start arguments that can be easily avoided by ignoring a thread not in your interests.

Like honestly, if you were an atheist would you go to church just to talk about how religion is wrong? What exactly were you expecting? I mean a few of your posts were on topic since it was criticizing eminem, but going on the tangent on how rap sux in general because of mainstream this and artists is just asking to start up pointless arguments.

your comments are making my head hurt, honestly the obsession of proper genre placement is laughable and is the last thing you should be concerned with if you really consider yourself an enthusiast when it comes to music.

also you need to stop being so hung up on other peoples opinions, my man...you're doing it all wrong !

kirbyWhat do you guys think of his new release, Berzerk?

@brownymaster - The above quote suggests us being invited to give our opinions and I gave mine. Everyone seemed to get hung up on the word "proper" and I felt compelled to explain myself. Either way, go back to talking about Eminem and I'll stop de-railing this thread further.

defyMikeikeikeikeikeikethis is horrible. eminem was cool when he said crazy shit. now he's just main stream boring. have you seen his music video for "im not afraid"? that was ridiculously bad.
he has been mainstream since the get-go

no he wasn't. what other rappers had an alter ego that would yell crazy shit and get in trouble with recording studios and get dropped from labels for speaking his mind? His music was definitely simple and not that unique but his lyrics definitely weren't main stream.

i think you're having trouble understanding what being a mainstream artist is

his first album was in 1996 which was obviously underground, only 3 years later he blew up with the slim shady LP, all over MTV...working with dr.dre, half million copies in a week, recognizable through out the country

when i say from the get-go i'm simply stating how quick he became popular with his first proper release and not through an independent label. 3 years is a very short period of time, some rappers have been doing it much longer and still aren't really known at all

understand, yes?

When you say "from the get-go" that is saying from the very beginning he was main stream. You don't even know what you're saying. Nice attempt at trying to change your argument buddy. Having a fan base doesn't make you main stream... Being main stream is using the cheese strats, doing the well known cliche formula that has been known to "work". Such as nickelback, or dubstep now. Understand what main stream is now? Let me ask you this, what specifically has eminem done at the get-go that was main stream?

I didn't like Berserk when I first heard it, but I have to say it's growing on me slightly now. Either way it's tough to say how much the song will be indicative of the album as a whole because singles are usually meant to be poppy and radio-friendly. The thing I want to know is how much of the production will be rick rubin stuff and how much will be more traditional dre type shit. Also wtf ever happened to the bass brothers? If he's gonna make an album called MMLP 2 it would be nice to see them produce a few tracks at least.

OK

do you know what mainstream music is? its your typical top 40, popular music that is on the radio, mtv, music that is well known. THAT is mainstream music, not as you described with 'cheese strats <---wtf are you talking about

when i said he was mainstream from the get-go meaning he blew up with his first MAJOR release, HE BECAME POPULAR QUICKLY, and i never said once in this entire thread that it was a bad thing at all so i really don't get where you're taking this argument

why do you automatically assume i'm talking about the very beginning of his career that makes absolutely no sense because you're generalizing what im talking about. thats like me saying metallica was mainstream the moment they stepped into a garage and started to play music together

when you become popular over such a short period of time, and gain rapid success you're whats known as a mainstream artist, there are BAD rappers and good ones, and to repeat myself from the 59437857893645 time i never said he was a bad mainstream rapper, just simply said mainstream and thats it

how many times can i repeat that word over and over until its drilled into your head, your term 'cheese strats' and automatically assuming all mainstream music is cliche makes absolutely no sense

also from the get-go is the START, and i think its safe to say that his MAJOR RELEASE was the START of his career, not when he was just an unknown rapper.

to end this long winded post and assbackwards argument from your idiotic assumptions, to be 110% clear and not repeat myself to get through your thick skull this is all based on MY OPINION, and you obviously don't agree with what i'm saying so you can stop now
