Damn, editing a post on your phone is hard, lost my first post which is probability good. A couple of things that people should know about me in my personal life. I have worked my entire life working in NPO c3 orgs that help people that are unable to help themselves. I am what most would consider a bleeding heart liberal, I am an atheist too, which wars regarding religion (ANY, including the crusades) I am always against. Anyone that knows me, or even spent a season playing this game with me, would never consider me pro-American. There is millions of things that are wrong with country and form of government and it's getting worse. I was also against the war. Would we move to Canada or Western EU if we could? Yes, we would and what is the point of all this?
So that people understand that I hate the idea politicians and governments using this day to rev people up for more votes and fear. I see this day as an anniversary of the deaths of 2,977 loved ones. I would assume that during any mass killings those people would think the exact same way. The majority of people do not want to seek revenge but rather seek true peace. Ok, I can't do this on the phone anymore

I remember being sent home from school early, and we were all given sealed notes. Walked in to the living room to watch a plane repeatedly crashing.

I was way too young to remember most of that day, but I was taken home from school. Some time later or so the teacher was watching news in class on the TV and they were showing footage of the war happening and what give you. It was disturbing to me then and I felt nothing but immense sadness. edit: actually this happened in middle school and 9/11 happened when i was in elementary still. whoops! watching it was still terrible to me though
I don't care what crazy conspiracies people can come up with or what in the end actually happened, it's extremely upsetting these people had to lose their lives for nothing.

FzeroThis is always hard for me, even when I am kinda drunk, but I am sorry for all those that died that day. I will always remember watching both towers falling in the 9th grade and watching people falling to their death. The one thing that I know I did wrong is not to speak to my mother before she rushed into the second tower to save everyone she could. While I have no illusion that you can read this, I hope that you know how many people you, and your firefighters, saved in that second tower. I love you so much, and thank you for putting others lives beyond your own.
I know it's basically a live journal, but I had to say it.
Watched it occur on TV in the morning before school. Something along the lines of "Mum why are there planes flying into that building". I think I was in 4th grade or something.

I was in 7th grade. My mom woke me up and shouted "they're bombing the Twin Towers!" Neither of us had any idea of what was going on until we started watching it on TV.
I remember watching the plane hit the second tower. I kept wanting to see it fall down because I was a dumb kid.

I remember being in Algebra class, 5th grade. I remember where I was sitting. Our assistant principle comes in and hands our teacher a notice from the government. The Twin Towers have been attacked, as well as the Pentagon. At first I didn't know how bad it was and my teacher seemed confused as well. Then we went home early to be with our family.
My family had gone to the top of one of them just a year earlier too. The worst part about it for me, being a kid, was that baseball was postponed for two weeks.

I think the whole family was called to the living room 'cause something was happening on the news. Then I saw the 2nd plane hit.
Ugh. Still feel uneasy thinking about it. :<
(I was 12 and just returned to Canada on August 29th after living in the Netherlands for 9 years.)

I don't remember when I even truly understood what happened. I do remember my neighbor and mom being horrified and talking about it, but it meant nothing to me just because of how little I understood as a 4th grader. I knew that they wanted Osama Bin Laden for it, but that was about it. It probably wasn't until high school that I started to realize the scope and actual event. Condolences, and remember that although we may not know your mom, we remember what she represented and sacrificed on that day.

What's the difference between 9/11 and a cow? You stop milking a cow after 12 years.
I'm going to hell for this
It's not even the joke that makes me the cringe. It's the fact that the "I'm going to hell for this" response after is probably a copy paste and that you actually thought to yourself "this post is funny eheh". You're trying way too hard to be something. Please don't be the guy who copies text off reddit or 4chan and posts it on facebook. Don't respond to me btw.

Not everyone reads reddit and things go viral because people spread it around so it's not such a bad thing. Still doesn't change the fact that the joke was shit, even if you ignore the insensitivity.
RIP to the victims. I remember watching it in school. It would have just felt like any other disaster you see on the news (bad, but you still feel a million miles away from it) but watching the second plane hit the tower live... that moment has really stuck with me ;/

It's hard to be edgy when you lack even the tiniest mote of creativity.
I'm sorry for anybody who experienced a personal loss during the event. I was in 7th grade at the time on the other side of the world on a school camping trip. One of our teachers made the announcement. I'm not even sure it phased half my class or they understood really what was happening but it was a pretty somber day from what I remember.

You can't take the opposite tack in so hard of a way. It'd be damn near impossible for any person to live with some kind of emotional baggage constantly hanging over them. Sometimes you need to put something out of your mind for a while, maybe even an entire year for people more heavily affected by an event. I'm not saying you need to forgive and forget, but sometimes you have to pick and choose when you really sit down and reflect on things that have happened, and sometimes you need to get on with your life. Your insistence that you choose one or the other shows a very clear lack of understanding of how humans work. I get that you don't care, and I'm not sure whether or not you're driven to say so because you think it makes you look cool, or even that voicing your opinion is important to you, but 12 years is a relatively short period of time in the scope of human history and there's still several generations of people still living with the effects of that event in their lifetime. Then there's people like me who have little to no stake in the matter. I didn't lose anybody, fine. Just because I can't empathize doesn't mean I can't sympathize. Any attempt to pass off my condolences or those of anybody else as empty platitudes is a very, very shallow cry for attention. In all honesty? I might not give a single thought to 9/11 throughout most of the day, and likely even less in the weeks to follow, but that's not my burden to carry. In the same way, it's not like I can't acknowledge the pain of others and in some attempt at being a better human than I am normally, voice some measure of support.
My reflex here is to tell you to jump onto a stair railing so that your testicles shoot up your body and into your throat and you choke to death seconds before they burst, releasing what little-motile semen you might have out of your nose and mouth, leaving a horrifyingly comic deathmask. But that would be about as inappropriate as you have been. So I won't tell you to die in a manner in which you essentially blow your load in the back of your own throat.
Have a pleasant day.

I really don't care, what with the thousands of innocents the american military has killed recently. If it were truly an eye for an eye, there would be a lot more collapsed buildings around the USA. (which obviously shouldn't be done, mind)

Overlooking the fact that one tragedy should have no bearing on whether or not you care about the other tragedy, then you are absolutely correct - if every action ever were repaid in full, a lot more people would be dead. Like, literally everywhere. All over the globe. We would never, as a human race, have made it to 2013.

By the way, would you recognize, and turn into a holiday of sorts, the death of a loved one, on the anniversary of their death, on the same day and only that day, every year from the year they died?
Would you do it if you didn't even know the person?
Many americans fake sympathy for this event - yet overlook many injustices, even within their own country and government.
In fact, people fake sympathy for a lot of things. In this case, I think its a little redundant 12 years later, unless you were someone involved with the incident - just saying.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I definitely think a lot of people fake sympathy for the event. I think a lot of people take advantage of it, and use it in a way that's twisted and pretty damn near inhuman in their disrespect for people. That doesn't negate the fact that there are both people who were, and still are, affected by the event, and that some people genuinely feel sorrow on behalf of those people.
I think overlooking injustices is pretty universal. Insisting on pointing to it happening in America is extremely unfair, considering your stance seems to be that injustice is a bad thing. I'm not defending the fact that a lot of things have distracted from important issues here, but at the same time there are issues world-wide that need immediate attention.
Logically speaking, not every problem can be fixed, and to attempt to fix every problem you need some kind of division of labor. So sometimes people can be focused on fixing certain problems at the expense of others. That's just how the world works. This country definitely could use some help in the way of avoiding distractions but let's be totally honest, social media networks aren't going to stop dead for no reason tomorrow. And being even more totally honest, America isn't the only country with problems. Note that this isn't a deflection - I'm not saying that because other countries have problems, ours are somehow mitigated. What I am saying is that you are, inherently, being unfair by pointing fingers at a single country, and being somewhat hypocritical in the process by attempting to highlight injustice.
BY THE WAY, have you seen this totally adorable and very distracting video?
