so what about the people who got fucked over? ie the people who's computers were damaged from bitcoin mining

Kinda surprising that since it was a criminal trial that zero time was given. Only a 350K fine that get out of jail seems pretty low to me.

Wrong. 350k now, 650k if they fuck up again in the next 10 years.
clorgso what about the people who got fucked over? ie the people who's computers were damaged from bitcoin mining
There was a compensation system set up for them and a class action lawsuit in California that is on going.
frknwoo no more prize pot raises???
IIRC the prize pot is from league fees and all else (including this) is from premium.

it would be easy for them to make a business decision not to increase the prize pot even if league fee income icnreases. afaik there is no requirement for them to do otherwise.

Pretty shitty business decision that would piss people off, although yes it is ESEA. 350k is a big chunk of change for ESEA, but not that big.

They wouldn't really have to announce it like that though, prize pot this year is the same as last year I think (with the exception of tf2 adding the main division), presumably because fee revenue wasn't up but who does the math?
i have no idea how much cash esea is sitting on though so maybe 350k is nothing to them

You still believe that story? Do you really think a coder could just implement that into the client without ANYONE noticing? Okay.

No it's BS. It's right there on the court document
30. Defendant Hunczak developed and created the ESEA Bitcoin Mining Code. 31. Defendant Thunberg supervised Hunczak's activities, provided Hunczak with input, and authorized,Hunczak to use ESEA company time to develop, create, and test the ESEA Bitcoin Mining Code. 32. Defendant Hunczak later executed the ESEA Bitcoin Mining Code on end-users' computers via the ESEA Software to create the ESEA Botnet

It was a simple question. I don't even know the whole story; I just read the article so calm down.

Too bad the price of bitcoins during the incident wasn't around $900 like it was yesterday.

you cant really prove that bitcoin mining explicitly fucked over anybodys pc, it was never the _only_ program running and everybody has different setups so im pretty sure any decent lawyer would get that claim dropped or reduced to something relatively insignificant

This is pretty interesting
Permanently enjoining Defendants Eric Thunberg and Sean Hunczak and their agents, employees, representatives, independent contractors and all other persons or entities directly under their control, from operating, managing or otherwise controlling any business activity within the State of New Jersey or directed to New Jersey consumers;
Too bad it's not directly part

Nope, it was the initial request. It's not part of the final settlement.

I would imagine this is still a huge chunk of esea's revenue, will they even manage to keep operating as normal?
PapaSmurf323you cant really prove that bitcoin mining explicitly fucked over anybodys pc

yes you can prove it ran and that it exerted stress on your pc but how do you say "my pc ONLY fucked up because of this specific string of a program running and has never had any problem that could have been caused by anything else"
i dont doubt that some people had shitty machines that might have overheated by sitting at 100% cpu usage for days but i have a hard time thinking of how they prove it if in fact their machines are fucked

You guys actually aren't looking into the court documents?
KanecoI would imagine this is still a huge chunk of esea's revenue, will they even manage to keep operating as normal?
Someone on /r/GlobalOffensive did the math based on statistics they release about the number of premium players and said that they are probably pulling in 1.3 million a year. After paying for servers, employees etc... 350k is a big chunk of change but likely not company ruining (especially if they have savings)

They also get to pay it over a specific amount of time as to not hinder ongoing business functionality, otherwise they would just run out of money and the business would fail and then wouldn't be able to pay it all back. SO the court will make the payments work for ESEA.

because they dont get ad revenue/league fees too
1.3 million gross revenue seems really low
1.3 million net revenue seems closer to reality
