HallowIt doesn't happen in every kind of competition. It's absolutely frowned upon in countless of sports.

I didn't even say sport I said competition. Whether it is a sport or not is irrelevant. Frowned upon doesn't mean it never happens.

It being frowned upon kind of kills the argument that we should encourage it because it's okay in sports. I'm saying that in a lot of sports, obviously not all, it's not.

shit talking?
in what competition does shit talking not happen? chess? Chinese checkers?
...in the (major and even minor) sports and in almost every video game shit talking happens.
please, give me a reasonably competitive team game where shit talking does not happen.

Where are you getting sports from? This has nothing to do with sports. I never referenced any sport.
Name one sport where there is no shit talk of any kind.

Is it so hard for you to differentiate between saying someone sucks and calling them a nigger?

I can't believe people are so sensitive about trash talk. It's part of the game and it creates rivalries and tension. Whenever I watch other games and I see trash talk I feel invested in the match.
It would be nice to keep the trash talk relevant to the game though. Not a big deal but it would be really mean if someone were to..i dunno make fun of someones weight or something. Just lay off their weight you know? makes me fucking sick seeing someone made fun of for their obesity. Fucking disgusting. It's a fucking joke.

I am going to train my hardest for the next 3 years. slowing becoming actually half decent at this game untill I eventually get on a lan worthy team. By this time TF2 shit talking will be at almost CoD levels and ingrained into the heads of every TF2 player so deep they wont know how to function without it. This is when I will strike
I shall unleash a hail of compliments at my enemies. praising how good they are, getting hype on the shots they are making. Telling them how there mothers are wonderfull people with above average parenting skills. and if they are close enough, giving them hugs while my respawn timer counts down.
they will be so distracted by my pure niceness they will play terribly and I will win lan, changing the lan meta forever and ushering in a new age for TF2
the age of sweet talk

Not saying it doesn't happen, I'm saying it's frowned upon (ie sportmanship is encouraged to the fullest). I know the cross country skiing community generally looks down on Northug for being a bit cocky in his interviews, and that's in not even proper shit talking.

Of course sportsmanship is encouraged over shit talking, but you know what is encouraged over that? Winning. Nobody strives to have the best sportsmanship, they strive to win. If we wouldn't have said anything all lan lansky wouldn't have gotten on edge and played worse than he normally does. If you don't think trying to make your opponent play worse is a viable strategy then again, maybe competition isn't for you. Have you considered picking up knitting?

I understand competition as well as the next guy. Competition is generally regulated though. So outlawing trashtalking would eliminate that element, which I feel adds nothing to the game (though it's obvious people disagree with me on this) and you'd still get to do your very best to win.

Which again leads back to the you sounding like the most boring person on earth. You sound like someone that thinks everyone deserves participation trophies so they don't get their feelings hurt that they lost. I agree that trash talking should be regulated to some extent (which it is) so things don't get out of hand, but to completely eliminate it would remove a huge part of the intensity from the game.
Shit i just noticed marmaduke said the same thing about participation medals as me, guess it is that obvious.

HallowmarmadukeGRYLLSwtf man how did it get from "we disagree on a very simple matter" to "you're a shit person aren't you?"Hallowbut it intensifies the game, so it's healthy right?
you're not very smart, are you?
i bet you support medals for "participation"
i bet you think kids shouldn't get cut from teams but rather "b" teams get made
i bet you aren't very good at anything that's competitive
you gonna cry yourself to sleep on your cock shaped pillow tonight?
I think you failed to understand that he was shit-talking you in a debate about shit-talking.

Months ago you called me absolute scum about 3 times in ugc forums . I denied a ringer in playoffs, although my reasons weren't for winning but what if they were? I could just say I was denying a ringer to win to give myself an edge, screw sportsmanship on rings or something I'm trying to win using your logic.

KevinIsPwnmix^ yelled and talked more shit than the cs players. good on them for winning and everything, but harb calling people slurs at the top of his lungs was not a high point for tf2.
edit: this post was wrong. it wasn't harb that yelled that out my bad.
i guess you're upset no one stood on any chairs also

This argument is mostly silly. The only people who are offended by friendly trash-talk are people who are seeking reasons to be offended. Plat got lost in the moment after winning a match with an incredible play and crossed a line with the n-word. He also immediately apologized and made sure it didn't happen again--well before he was warned. Does that make it OK? Maybe not, but at least it's something. I don't necessarily agree with throwing around homosexual slurs in a room full of crowded people, but there is a zero percent chance that it offended anyone who wasn't already looking for a reason to be offended.
If you think, "hey is it too late to get shade back on the roster???" is any worse than, "hey batter batter batter, your mama is a ho!" or any other level of trash-talk that occurs in every other sport, you're misguided. 99% of what was said consisted of silly, in-the-moment, pokes that would have occurred in mumble after a pug all the same.
Homosexual/racist slurs notwithstanding, trash-talking is not a problem, and was actually quite entertaining as a spectator.
If you want to see problematic trash-talk, look to the CS players.

You are trying to compare two completely different things by saying "they both help your team win." We had this discussion already a couple pages back. There is a huge difference between punching someone and murdering them, same with talking shit to someone and completely preventing them from playing. Of course there has to be a line drawn somewhere, and I understand some people want it drawn before trash talk, but to argue that the two of them are the similar because they help your team is idiotic.

This. I think it's a little distasteful to trashtalk a low open team if you are a high open team that gets scheduled against them in the first couple weeks and roll them 5-0 in under 10 minutes...but if it's a match between two close teams there is nothing wrong at all with talking some shit (short of slurs being a little over the top).

since when has sportsmanship been relevant in the realm of competitive videogames? not saying it couldn't/shouldn't be, but you need something of a reality check if you have yet to recognize the kind of sub-culture you've immersed yourself in.

well, ESEA-O should probably check themselves, even at the top of open.
I mean, just because you're the best sprinter in the overweight (450+) division doesn't mean you are good enough to talk shit.
