It's just a minor troll (OK, some streamers do play intolerable crap), but really if people don't like it then look for stuff licensed under creative commons that's outside the official scope of copyright industry enforcement. There's a lot of music out there that's free, and promoting it helps the creators on their way. There are probably people on this forum producing it.
The recognised music industry really is the fast food outlet of music culture, but people are addicted to it because it's easy and familiar. If they're making it hard then fuck them, break the cycle and prove their model is out dated.
It wouldn't solve the false positive problem but there's not much anyone can do about that except appeal to Twitch when you know you're in the right.

A very interesting take on the situation: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+RonAmadeo/posts/e5VJHRYsNEE
tldr; The Google deal fell through and twitch are preparing to cut costs without the massive cash injection as twitch is becoming a lot more popular.

To be honest I'm not sure he understands. It's not Twitch that's getting a billion dollar cash injection, it's the investors who are taking that money away in their back pockets. Twitch get a change in management.
There are rational reasons for Google to demand Twitch do it before a full takeover, i.e. Google is actually worth suing while Twitch makes nothing, and for a takeover company to come in and cut costs by slashing and burning low value assets (videos older than 60 days + for example) is standard practice in any industry.
Google are probably one of the few companies that know more than Twitch about the economics of mass storage and hi def videos are not analogous to emails. Also from a PR perspective it puts the old management on the hook for doing all the bad stuff and Google's reputation remains snow white when they actually take over.
On the plus side Google might sort out Twitch's dire HTML 5 player.

This is so wrong. There are dozens or hundreds of examples out there, the problem is that 99 out of 100 times there is a lot of pressure for a musician to get signed to a label to be able to break through and get himself out there. Plenty of musicians end up signing deals they don't totally agree with. And labels end up having more control of their music than the musicians itself. There are plenty of examples out there. (1, 2, 3, 4, etc etc... These are examples of various degrees and causes that labels not always represent the artists best interests (as it's obvious).
So sometimes you end up using songs from that one artist you love, and that artist actually supports people playing around with his music and sharing it with friends and other people, but because he is signed to a record label, he can't really control that, and last thing he knows, all his songs and remixes are on youtube/twitch content ID system, without his knowledge, and then you can't really use his songs anymore...
This goes much deeper than "You guys only hear the fast food of music, find some really obscure indie shit no one knows and use that on your streams/videos".
I can't remember the times I used songs from relatively unknown artists on comp.tf videos (with full credit given), from artists that I followed since their early soundcloud days and that I am sure are supportive of what people are doing with their music and sharing it, but because of some evil recording label they can't do shit about it.
Here's a very concrete example, I used a song of a rather unknown artist on one of our videos, it got flagged within 2 days. I messaged the artist on his facebook page and got an answer right away, so I contested youtube copyright claim. Do you know when I last heard from youtube that I could provide the needed information on my counter claim? Last month, yeah, 6-7 months after I originally contested the claim, at that point I just gave up and didn't follow it up with the artist, it was simply not worth it for an almost 8 month old video with barely 2k views.
Do you know how many likes his facebook fan page had at the time? Barely 200, and he didn't have more than 500 soundcloud followers iirc, yet his music got flagged despite the artist being very supportive of what I was doing. I think at some point our video on comp.tf had more views than the original song the artist posted. Want more underground than that?
The music/copyright industry is a big steaming pile of shit built on obsolete foundations that should have been reformed a long time ago, at this point in time they are actively hindering development of further things, instead of promoting it.

Emmett Shear Twitch's CEOW/ regard to 2 hour chunks:
Our research prior to launching the feature indicated that almost no highlights were longer than 2 hours, and we were concerned about abuse of the tool. It's clear that we underestimated the demand and need for a solution here, and fortunately we have 3 weeks to figure one out. Expect changes here soon.
It has disproportionately large impact on certain communities (speedrunning most obviously) and we're very concerned about making sure that every community on Twitch has a good experience.
W/ regard to content id:
Hey Cosmo, I understand your feelings here. We have absolutely no intention of flagging songs due to original in-game music. If that's happening (and it appears it is), it's a problem and we will investigate and try to fix it.
W/ regards to your last question, why Twitch:
Because we care about you and your viewers, and we want every broadcaster on Twitch to be protected from potential liability. No matter how remote you might feel the issue is, we aren't willing to run the risk someone's life gets ruined over this.
PS: I don't think your VODs are being flagged right now, but I realize that doesn't help anyone else getting caught in the crossfire.
So it seems like they might make highlights longer, but he contradicts himself with the statement of "We have absolutely no intention of flagging songs due to original in-game music." from http://blog.twitch.tv/2014/08/3136/ So I don't really know what to think :/ .

One thing you could do for VODs, is stream to youtube and twitch at the same time. AFAIK youtube doesn't block audio on VODs currently.

I don't think this is as big of a deal people make it to be. I don't think a lot of people watch twitch VODs of regular streams, only matches they missed. And those can be uploaded to youtube with the music part cut out. Music industry is just being the dicks they are and the users are getting the D hard up the ass.

Here is an blog saying that a few things about the RUMORS of Google overtaking Twitch:
Why would Twitch create their own music copyright system that competes with Google/YouTube when the latter already has their own? Why is Twitch worrying about storage space and disabling VODs when Google/YouTube has almost unlimited amounts of storage? This whole ordeal seems like panic from failing to make a deal with Google rather than preparing for Google's takeover because these decisions are extremely misguided and harmful.

KanecoThis goes much deeper than "You guys only hear the fast food of music, find some really obscure indie shit no one knows and use that on your streams/videos".
I didn't say this, but if you don't want obscure then a big company somewhere is paying the marketing budget that means you've heard of it. If you don't want indie then you're asking for a big label. If you don't want shit then pick something you like. If you want a big label to market music directly to you for your enjoyment then they want something back for it. They apparently aren't satisfied with you doing a bit more marketing for them.
If you don't like the way a service implements it's copyright control then your only choice is to vote with your feet and move. If they are a monopoly or you feel there's no alternative then your only recourse is to find legal means. If they still fuck up then you have no choice but to put it down to experience (and maybe re-make the video with a different soundtrack).
The forces involved are massive, I really can't get across how insignificant this is. It's their world.
If you don't want to eat junk food then find an indie eatery, or cook yourself. Does EXTV still use music from one of their brother's bands?

Hey folks,
There have been numerous threads with Twitch bashing in the past, and I tend to stay away from them to keep myself emotionally sane. This time it’s probably in my best interest to not do that and let you guys know my thoughts.
Did we drop the ball on a few things? Absolutely. We’re a startup. We move fast. We make crazy decisions. Sometimes we don’t think things through as deeply as we should. We take feedback, analyze it, and grow from our mistakes. We’re always learning, and that’s a good thing. Mistakes are great for us. If you make no mistakes, you don’t learn. You become complacent, and you lose sight of what’s important: your users and the communities they've created.
Is change necessary? Absolutely. If we want to grow this into something REALLY HUGE, we need to change the way we do some things. We need to cover our asses. We need to cover your asses.
I just want you to know that I’m reading and listening. I've invested a ton of time and energy (a significant chunk of it on my personal time) to help you guys grow and get the credit you deserve for how passionate and dedicated you are. This community means a lot to me, and I’ll do everything in my power to do right by you guys. No amount of anger you throw at me or the company I work for is going to change that.

From what I hear, Japanese record labels are worse than the American ones. They don't even put full music videos on Youtube.
Although they might not use the service Twitch uses, so you might be safe. Just watch your VODs. Well, your video manager.

Gotta know how am I supposed to know if I can appeal this or not if I can't hear the original sound?
cause I had streamed a VOD and made a highlight of it before you guys implemented it I have no idea if I was playing music or not at the end of the VOD and I ended up cutting my stream. Problem is that my highlight also got flagged for the last 10 minutes or so (it was a scrim with mumble comms)
VOD http://www.twitch.tv/comanglia/b/550898002
Highlight http://www.twitch.tv/comanglia/c/4738840
I then back checked my Highlight for this music because I had uploaded it to youtube before you implemented this awful awful decision.

no music in the background at all for the entire scrim yet on my highlight part of it is muted :/
-EDIT-
I guess I should make short question out of this.
How am I supposed to appeal this if you destroy what could be the only evidence by muting it?

I think the audio shouldn't be muted for the broadcaster, so the broadcaster can actually review the video for copyrighted content. Youtube does a similar thing; even if your video is blocked worldwide, you can still view it on Youtube.

Yes.
turtsmcgurtsi wonder how long until a service pops up that can streamers pay for that will record your streams live and have them available on their website for you and your viewers as VODs. (for people without the storage space to record locally several hours of gameplay)
