People come and go. He did well, he might still win some tournaments but in the end we all get old. He's still ranked number 2 anyway.

Maybe we can tie this into TF2. Perhaps Federer can be thought of as akin to Classic Mix^, so dominant for so long, and still a top tier team, but perhaps showing a little bit of strain after playing at the top for so long.

fed still has a few more years in him. remember he came back to win the monfils match after being down 2 sets and at match point. hes 33 and hes still capable of doing that. hes in extremely good shape. everyone in the top 50 are capable of being in the top 5, its just all about consistency. some people play really well in tournaments, it happens. cilic and nishikori are playing out of their minds. 100% deserve to beat fed/djokovic. you'll see fed going far in the next us open, but im betting cilic/monfils/nishikori will be injured or out early.

He's still the richest tennis player by far so he's got that going for him.

The fact that we are watching someone change history has already been good enough for me. From this point on its just pointless numbers. And I highly doubt we will see someone nearly as good as him even within the next decade or two. Nadal and Djocovic's career accomplishment is nothing out of the ordinary, but Federer is honestly a protege you rarely get to witness.

First off congrats to Cilic, hoping he can win it all!

Secondly, Federer is clearly on a decline (which is normal for any athlete in any sport) but he's already known as the greatest ever so I don't think he minds leaving with grace.

I'd be surprised. People who don't watch tennis know Federer, but less know about Nadal. Federer's got a lot more reputation than Nadal.

I think Federer definitely still have some time left. He is playing pretty well right now, and just got outplayed by a guy who has been playing quite well this whole tournament. Same goes for the Djoker. As far as him not winning, I by no means see it as a tragedy. I'm thrilled to finally see some other people getting to the finals of these tournaments besides the big four. Keeps things much more interesting, and it's giving other guys a shot at a title.

Yeah for real. Someone through out a stat (if it's accurate) saying this is the first time since the 2005 Australian Open that either Fed, Nadal, or Djokovic haven't been in a Grand Slam Final . Good to see two new guys in there.

I really would like to see Federer win another, but I think any of the Big 4 are going to be hard pressed to win if the newer blood starts playing like Cilic/Nishikori did this tourney. That said he's still in great shape. Finals @ Wimbledon, finals at every hard court tourney in between, a semis at US Open. Dudes got some time left and those younger guys are still having to play at their absolute peak to beat him.

Nishikori and Marin deserve to be in the final. Without Rafa in the tournament it was most definitely an easier draw. But damn I was praying Federer to get that 18th.
