My mumble overlay always crashes tf2 if i have it enabled. Mumble works fine and tf2 works fine only if the overlay is disabled, but if its enabled it makes tf2 close instantly.
heres my steam profile if that means anything: http://steamcommunity.com/id/pantsthatfitgood
tl;dr I will give you a strange machina if you help me get my mumble overlay working

Are you using any fps cfg? If yes then find mat_antialias 1 instead of 0.
Also make sure its not on the blacklist

I think someone posted about this before and it had to do with their dxlevel. If yours is 8 then try 9. also make sure its in your whitelist like they said^

try a mumble beta (or stable version if you're on beta)

I had this problem with TF2 and CS:GO. It had to do with the Razer heatmaps beta thing.
I had to uninstall Razer Synapse and reinstall without the heatmaps beta update in order to get it working again. That fixed TF2 and CS:GO crashing for me.
However, I seem to have a unique problem where my Mumble overlay won't work at all in any games no matter what I try.

From my experience Mumble is one of the few programs that functions differently between Windows 7 and 8. Do you have windows 8? If so you might have to change out a dll or something in the Mumble but I can't quite remember what my old problem was or how I fixed it. Sorry.
You should try and see if it works in other games just to have another baseline.

Hmm... I just noticed that I have the same problem. I haven't been using the Mumble overlay for a while since it never works for me, but I just turned it on, and I'm getting exactly the same problem that you are.
Interesting....

Okay, this might not workout for you, however it did work out for me.
I am using windows 8.1 64bit on a laptop with GT555m. So it's a mobile card, no biggie. Uninstall the current mumble version you have, go and download 1.2.4 and install it, disable auto updater and notifier for it. At the launch options, I actually use
-nod3dex -dxlevel 81 -h 1050 -w 1680
Believe it or not, if I don't add both
-nod3dex -dxlevel 81
, I can't see the mumble overlay, along with steam overlay. This is something I did to get it "working". Feel free to try it out and report if it did or did not work out for you!

I'm on a 650M card and had the exact problem two years ago. What fixed it for me was installing version 1.2.4 beta and putting -nod3d9ex in the launch options. I'm also using -dxlevel 81.

tried reinstalling mumble
tried reinstalling tf2
tried installing older mumble versions
tried changing the dxlevel
tried disabling my graphics card/messing with it
tried changing how tf2 launches (window mode, borderless window mode, etc)
tried verifying integrity of game cache
tried everything in this thread and mr slins old thread
tried on the administrator account
and duh i launch mumble before tf2 and have the overlay enabled
probably have tried alot of other things that i cant remember
the mumble overlay doesnt show up in any games or applications, it never has, it probably never will on this computer
the strange machina is still up for grabs for whoever can get my mumble overlay working
add me on steam if you want to try and help, but ive pretty much lost interest and hope to ever seeing a mumble overlay

Keep hl2.exe in the whitelist.
start mumble before you start steam
disable steam in-game overlay
try this snapshot version of mumble 1.2.4? http://mumble.info/snapshot/mumble-1.2.4-rc1-12-gdab8157.msi (if you haven't already)
combine all that with -nod3d9ex, -dxlevel 81 as well as fullscreen with your height and width defined (or borderless windowed if it doesn't work), and start mumble as administrator. If all that combined doesn't work I hope you're good at memorizing voices.

now this may seem really strange but this use to happen to me as well. If you have a nvidia graphics card, go to your desktop and right click to go to nvidia control panel. Under there go to manage 3d settings and make sure the preferred graphics processor is auto select. I set it on high preformance nvidia processor and whenever I started ANY game it wouldn't launcher. Even though it sounds weird give it a shot.

try switching between dx9 and dx8 (like start the game in dx9, close it, then go back to dx8 or vice versa if you play in dx9)
has worked for me in the past
also try the mat_antialias 1 if you have antialiasing off ingame (if you haven't already)
