drakI'm sorry to piggyback here, but could someone help me: I'm unable to "Find Match" for TF2 pugs (through the ESEA client), and it says "The selected game is currently unsupported."
Am I missing something?
The ESEA MM system is only for CS:GO. You have to manually join a PUG server from the server tab to play in TF2 PUGs.

DaStabahHow does your site work? Is it still using an IRC bot with the site acting as a GUI? What language is it coded in? Depending on what's actually being done to get these pugs going in the background will have an effect on who's willing to help.
I already linked the relevant post here and its on our official thread aswell. But here's the link direct to kuferl post.
Afaik kuferl developed the frontend and backend and trath developed the pickup bot using socket (javascript)

defyWe have posted several times over here and etf2l, and through our steam groups, asking for help and coders, no one has contacted us directly.
sometimes you have to reach out to people that don't frequent forums, with mix on the decline i'm sure cinq could help if he has the time but he is someone you'd definitely have to try to get a hold of yourself
uh, they don't have to make an NA version, and shouldn't be expected to reach out to americans either. if you guys want pugs so badly (that you make threads complaining about a lack of them) get proactive

i never said they have to make a NA version bud, cinq has been the backbone of our pug system since comp tf2 spawned and it was only a suggestion since kaneco said
We promised a NA version if we got help, we got no help so far, thus, no NA version.
also who gives a fuck where a person is from if they're good at coding?

You and some other people seem to have misunderstood what I said, so I'm gonna make it clear.
At the moment we have 0 active devs, to develop a NA version of the site (despite most of the framework being built) we need at least 1 active dev.
Thus,we are asking for a volunteer to help us out, no matter where from. This is not a question of needing people specifically from one scene or the other, it's a question of needing anyone at all. I don't get it why you guys are being so defensive, we would be more than happy to have a NA version of the site working if we had the resources for it, but we don't.

Why is this getting downvoted? It is a legitimate question--is there a reason you can't just host a copy of the exact code code from tf2pickup on na.tf2pickup.net, like what serveme does? The TF2Pickup team talks about a need for more programmers to port the site to NA but it doesn't look like more work is needed right now.
Getting funding for TF2 and Mumble servers in NA is still an issue but it is completely separate from needing volunteers to code a website.

We dont need a mumble nor servers. As I said Simrai already offered that.
As for the site, I don't exactly know the specifics of what's left to code, I know most of the framework is ready but there was still some work to do for the na version, the best way to know that, if you're interested, is to had Kuferl and have a talk with him.

This is so wrong, it's an awful mistake to have such an active site like tf2pickup (atm abour 40 pickups a day) without an active dev, no matter if the site needs work or not. Just the other day the pickup bot broke or something and it wasn't working for 1 day until I managed to get ahold of kuferl and he fixed it, but he's not there to save us all the time as he's not really active anymore.

What can we learn from the death of irc pugs? Was it due to separating the pool of players? Or perhaps the lack of new blood? How can we prevent this in the future?

please ignore this if you actually thought irc pugs were fun
You ever notice how people treat their friends much better than they treat strangers? That's the driving force behind why in-houses just work so much better.
It's even worse when you've got people that do know each other. People in groups naturally don't care about "outsiders". See: a group of high school students in a movie theater being loud as fuck and not even thinking twice about the other people around, leaving a huge mess and yelling to annoy people for kicks.
I found the pug experience to be like sitting in a movie theater trying to enjoy the film with a bunch of rowdy teenagers throwing popcorn at people and laughing.
BASICALLY pugs would be fun if seriousness was enforced, but i doubt that will ever happen. It would solve the problem of nobody wanting to play medic, at least?

I see what you're saying here, but from my experience the biggest problem with IRC pugs was the lack of administration and the tendancy for people to stop adding up when they see others aren't added. Unlike inhouse pugs where people start pugs with announcements or steam messages, there was no real way for irc pugs to get people to add up.
Without this motivation a lot of people would glance at the channel, realize there weren't enough players to pug, and leave the IRC. The idea of people not playing medic was only really an issue at the very end of the channels life (when most of the regulars had stopped opening the IRC in the first place) and at the very beginning.
The whole lack of seriousness you're talking about is mainly caused by the fact that most of the admins didn't pay attention to the channel or had stepped down. In the months preceding mixes death defy was the only 'active' admin, although not usually online during pugs.
As people have said, ultimately irc pugs died because people dont like idling in irc channels. Developing a good web client like the one reilly posted could definitely bring back the player base for pug.na imo.

I agree with you, but i was addressing something else in my post. I think a lot of people (like me) quit playing pugs before IRC pugs started dying simply because they weren't fun anymore. That's separate from the people that just stopped adding up because everyone else did.

Pugna used to have admins who would send an announcement from the steam group around the normal pugging time. In the months before the death of pugna, Mythikal/mpb/Fog stopped doing so, resulting in less games starting. Switching irc servers wasn't beneficial. Also, the season in which many teams played both ESEA and CEVO coincided with pugna losing most of its userbase.
The issue with pugna/mix wasn't the irc format. Even if you successfully argue that irc is too complicated to use (which is absolutely moronic, it's a chat box), there is already a large playerbase which has already used pugna/mix in their years of service, and thus have already overcome this immense barrier. As of now, there are still (after 2-3 months of no pugs) 21 people idling in pugna. If the bot/servers were to be restarted, new admins chosen (for the old group, as it has >1000 members), and some kind of larger announcement on the forums made, I see no reason why it couldn't be restored to what it was a year ago.
If it's absolutely necessary to make a more user-friendly interface, we could do what Twitch chat does. Make a web client or executable (like Dango's) which displays IRC chat, but masks all of the commands behind pretty pictures and has a more visual interface for actions such as adding, captaining, etc. This would allow users to interact with a nice Center-like interface or with a normal IRC client.
Ultimately, IRC pugs are just momentum-driven. If people know that they're happening, they will work better than inhouses in terms of both consistency and how inclusive they are. After the series of events described above, the momentum is gone, and they die until they are restarted forcefully.

what server location/regions do people usually play pugs in NA? are there any recommendations on dedicated server hosting in those locations?
chicago servers are good (outside of esea)

What can we learn from the death of irc pugs? Was it due to separating the pool of players? Or perhaps the lack of new blood? How can we prevent this in the future?
Developing a good web client like the one reilly posted could definitely bring back the player base for pug.na imo.
lol? If the problem isn't irc then why hasn't a pug started in over a week yet tf2pickup sees 40 pugs per day. I know fucking tons of people who dont want to bother with irc but still want to pug. There needs to be a visual web based service for people to want to pug. Stats don't lie.
