-protolol? If the problem isn't irc then why hasn't a pug started in over a week yet tf2pickup sees 40 pugs per day. I know fucking tons of people who dont want to bother with irc but still want to pug. There needs to be a visual web based service for people to want to pug. Stats don't lie.
WaldoPugna used to have admins who would send an announcement from the steam group around the normal pugging time. In the months before the death of pugna, Mythikal/mpb/Fog stopped doing so, resulting in less games starting. Switching irc servers wasn't beneficial. Also, the season in which many teams played both ESEA and CEVO coincided with pugna losing most of its userbase.
Ultimately, IRC pugs are just momentum-driven. If people know that they're happening, they will work better than inhouses in terms of both consistency and how inclusive they are. After the series of events described above, the momentum is gone, and they die until they are restarted forcefully.
Correlation doesn't imply causation.

-protoWaldoThe issue with pugna/mix wasn't the irc format. Even if you successfully argue that irc is too complicated to use (which is absolutely moronic, it's a chat box), there is already a large playerbase which has already used pugna/mix in their years of service, and thus have already overcome this immense barrier.

I have to agree with proto on the last instance.
IRC is the past, it's not user friendly, its clunky, hard to set up for beginners, it's a huge hassle... I'm 22 and I just caught the end of the irc widespread usage in my teens, we are in 2015, and most of the new generation of people playing have never heard nor used IRC once in their life, and they can't be bothered with it. Which is why tf2pickup is soaring with 1000 pickups last month and all the IRC Pug channels in europe are dead.
If we can get a much more user friendly and reliable web based platform why not opt that way? Now I would love to get you guys on board of our platform, that's why we are asking for help. If we can get any volunteer to help out with finishing the na site I'm sure it would be ready to launch in a very short time. Until then, you are free to play EU pickups as long as you keep the required skill level and ping is not an issue for you.

WaldoIf it's absolutely necessary to make a more user-friendly interface, we could do what Twitch chat does. Make a web client or executable (like Dango's) which displays IRC chat, but masks all of the commands behind pretty pictures and has a more visual interface for actions such as adding, captaining, etc. This would allow users to interact with a nice Center-like interface or with a normal IRC client.
A month ago when I first had the idea, I actually planned to do it like this. However, when I tried contacting the pugna admins, they all either ignored me or directed me to cyzer, who also ignored me.
Also just to clarify, mine is a website, it's just possible to run it as a chrome app on your desktop for those who would prefer it that way.

Imply is used in the logical sense in the phrase, not as casually used; eg. if P implies Q, ~Q implies ~P.

when the community has enough time to put a research team together we can work on acquiring some quantitative data and evaluate our overall p value to tackle the question of "is irc killing pugs?"
for now let's assume everyone's testimonials about not liking irc is a pretty strong indicator

it seems like people who say they need a pretty graphical overlay website thing with colorful pictures of maps and classes just dont like to pug or are overly obsessed with shiny stuff. it isnt that hard to go to atf2.org and type !add scout and people have been doing that for ages and it used to be super active but somehow we now need some talented team of developers to get together in order to "save tf2 pugs". Literally all that needs to be done is for the pug.na bot to be fixed and have people play pug.na and tf2mix and voila there are pugs.
Phunkrunescape_boy_420if you could fatkid people in esea pugs and medics werent automatically captains theyd probably be good imo
yeah it will be like tf2 Reaganomics
good people get better and bad people stay bad
thats what tf2mix was for. Fatkidded players had a chance to not get fatkidded in a sense that didnt make the game unbearable to people who want competetive games. now every pug that isnt inhouse(ive seen alot of inhouses advertised/run by people who struggle in tf2center so im still skeptical but i guess i shouldnt knock it until i try it) is tf2mix normal mode
tl;dr just forcefully bring back irc pugs they arent unbearable and require less effort than creating a fancy new website

What, exactly, is going to bring them back? Last I checked the channels and servers are still there. If people wanted to use them, they'd be using them now.
Since people aren't actually using them, it's probably a good idea to figure out the issue and look for a solution.

the solution is to play irc pugs/ get the word out that theyre active
also half of the tf2mix servers were bugging out right before they died and there was one active admin
the pugna bot is dead also
theres nothing broken with using a working irc system unless you have trouble using a keyboard

plinkos right, everyone knows that tf2mix and pugna still work yet no one plays them. How can you even argue that the problem isn't irc?

the problem is the fact people dont use irc since its died all it needs is a revival plus they dont still work(pugna bot dead, tf2mix servers buggy) so ur wrong
but sure if u need a flashy website with a pretty gui that take 9 months or some shit to get rockin n' rollin in order to pick 6v6 teams i guess ud be 100% correct

i think it's an awareness problem. i think we can bring back irc pugs if we start scheduling pugs and announcing them via steam group and posting on tftv. once that starts rolling out and pugs become semi consistent we need admins to continually and constantly use the steam group to advertise the pugs starting. once pugs return to their kind-of formal self all we have to do is to have a pug link page with instructions on how to play on the top of tftv or something to ensure that new blood is always flowing.

Why not just use this opportunity to develop and adopt a more intuitive user friendly site like dango's instead of arguing about whether IRC should be brought back.
Regardless if you find IRC easy to use or not a GUI based system is far easier to use, especially considering almost every player that has entered the game in past year or two will very likely have little to no experience with any sort of IRC.
With a fresh wave of advertisement we could make pugs 10x more active than they've every been. Just look at the activity of tf2center

Wow! Its almost as if its already been months because no one wants to use IRC. Have you not been here for the past few months or something?
If you've bothered to read we already have a functional GUI based site made by Dango. It just needs servers. Now go back to jerking off thinking about the good old days when everyone needed to email each other to quake pug.

i didnt read that but everything i said except the last thing is correct and ive only known about 6v6 for like a year and a half and have only pugged for like 10 months or something so alot of the stuff youve said is really dumb
i really hope the site is good and up soon though

You've only pugged for 10 months?? So you have been here the entire time as IRC was pretty much dying and has been dead for like months so you know exactly what I'm talking about.
In addition people don't think its too "hard" to type !add or !remove its just new players aren't going to bother learning something like IRC because its intimidating for first time users and in-houses and tf2center are easier to play in.
Why do most people not drive stick anymore? It's not because it is soooo much harder than automatic, its because stick shift, much like IRC, is intimidating to newcomers while automatic, like a GUI system, is much more intuitive and so they'd rather use that.
I'm glad you can appreciate the new site dango has made.
