So I was playing MvM on a Mann Up server (VAC) and I taunted and then when it went out of the taunt suddenly I had something like 110 or 120 FOV. It reset back to 90 when I died. I got a demo and a couple screenshots. fov_desired was set to 90 the entire time. Viewmodel FOV changed on top of normal FOV.

TechDudeAwesome, can you reproduce?
No. All I did was use the laugh taunt when coming out of a teleporter, right after having teled. I tabbed out of the game during the taunt, maybe that caused it?
Still in this MvM game so I haven't yet checked to see if the demo has the FOV.

almost certainly has something to do with alt-tabbing, this game does some really wonky stuff when you do that.

I run in borderless windowed mode though, not fullscreen. It shouldn't have done anything that wonky. I think the chat window was up because I did that to release the cursor for tabbing. I think third person FOV is higher than first person, but it didn't re-apply the first person for whatever reason at the end of the taunt.
Screenshot comparison in same exact spot at normal 90 FOV.

oh, definitely interesting if you were in borderless
would be cool if you can reproduce. 120 is a great fov for tf2 imo

It was amazing, I played that entire round with 120 and when it went back to 90 when I died, it nearly made me vomit.
EDIT: The demo file has 120fov. I'm uploading it now for you guys.

Here's the demo. I left it running for quite awhile, so it's a little bloated (36MB). 120 FOV ends around 2:30 when I die.
Air_why were you taunting robots
I did the laugh taunt pre-game after coming out of a teleporter in reaction to something the medic did

It happened again in my next round of MvM
I was congaing pre-game and came out of it and suddenly 120fov

Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago, but hasn't happened since. I died and just spawned with really high fov / viewmodel fov. Console said they were both 90, but they definitely weren't.

The same story as op, i taunted while teleporting.
I only managed to reproduce it once

I'm pretty sure I know why this happens.
I just went on a private server and spammed taunts while going through a teleporter and I eventually got it to work. http://puu.sh/gEiS1/8a05a77768.jpg
If you look closely, you will see that when you get teleported, your FOV starts higher than normal, and over a very short period, gets narrowed down to 90 (or whatever your FOV setting is).
So if you are able to taunt right as you get teleported, you will have the higher FOV, and for some reason taunting will keep the FOV from going back down to 90.
EDIT: I've just done some testing using host_timescale .1 (running the game at a tenth of the normal speed) and I've been unable to reproduce the bug even if I start taunting while the FOV is high, so it may be that it's just a random chance thing, or it may be that the timing is incredibly difficult. Either way, I'm very interested in this and I will keep testing.
EDIT 2: I spent another 30 minutes testing (I hope I wasn't supposed to get anything done today) and I can confirm that I was correct with my first paragraph, I could make a video about it to show it more clearly if anybody wants.

how much does someone wanna bet that an update is going to have "fixed an exploit related to teleporters/taunts" in the patch notes within the next month.
I've known about this for a long while.
The FOV seems to be cancled upon death or scoping in as sniper (At least in MvM, kinda disappointing, but not a huge loss.)
I love the way it looks, but it's a shame you're limited to what you can with it.

Also the FOV is reset when you go through a teleporter, and there are probably some other things that reset it as well. I don't see this as being very useful as it is very hard to do. Oh well.

I randomly ran into the commands that explain this the other day. It's built into tf2 that after teleporting your fov is increased to 120 and descales back to what you had before over a period of 0.5 second. Maybe alt-tabbing at the exact time causes it to get stuck at 120 fov.

Anything that pops the camera out from your viewmodel or alters your FOV in any way - going into third person, spectating someone, taunting, using a teleporter, scoping in, probably altering your field of view normally.
BurningI'm pretty sure I know why this happens.
I don't think so. Remember, it happened to me while simply congaing, not using a tele. I think it's very situational and was probably exacerbated by a recent patch. I've played TF2 for years and I've never seen this happen before.
For the record though, Burning, I was able to reproduce it the way you said.

It's not alt tabbing, though that could have caused it too if someone used fullscreen. I run in borderless windowed. It was probably the taunting that messed it up.
I know this is going to be patched within a few days now that we've narrowed it down, but please Valve, at least increase the FOV to 100. I understand the spy argument, and 120 isn't necessary, but at least give us 100, even if only through cvars ;_;
Anyway, I've managed to reproduce it a couple of times with the teleporter taunt. Something interesting to note is that while in this bugged mode, fov_desired does absolutely nothing. You can set your FOV to 75 and everything is still at a high FOV. Taunting does not revert it, but taking a tele, dying, and scoping in do.

You already have over 100 fov in TF2 with a 16:9 ratio. I don't understand the issue. The more fov you add, the easier it is to see someone flanking you and takes the element of timely flanks completely out of the equation. If you had 100 fov in settings with a 16:9 ratio I'm sure medics could find really stupid visual angles to see basically everything that's trying to flank your team, spies included.

Edit: if people are worried about this bug getting abused, couldn't leagues just set tf_teleporter_fov_start 90 in their configs?

you can achieve any fov you want by creating a custom resolution
nvidia instructions
create a custom resolution, if you want 120 fov use 1920x 830 assuming you use fov_desired 90. You don't have to be using this resolution as your desktop resolution you just need to have it saved as a custom resolution. after that just put -w 1920 -h 830 (or w/e res you want) in your launch options

The point is that this trick is aspect ratio-independent, and gives you a fov_desired of 120, which means at 1920x830 you'd have an even higher fov than 120.

Hm that's interesting. One guy also said it happened to him when he respawned, instead of going through a tele, so there may be multiple scenarios that cause it to happen, but at least I figured out one of them :D
Also Hooli, that trick doesn't work, it may have been patched or something, but I have tried it in the past and I just tried it again and it doesn't work.
