wait so its ok to eat cows, chicken, elk, bison, horses and ducks but not ok to eat dogs? why is that?
also there's no way the chinese are going to stop doing something they've done for hundreds of years just because a bunch of westerners don't think its ok.

I don't think that's the primary issue being raised. It's not necessarily the eating of dogs in China, it's more the absolute torture they're putting the dogs in. Have a little research on this, they're burning them alive and more.

isn't eating dog not only a traditional thing in china but also one of the only choices for a lot of people in crippling poverty there?
I mean go ahead and tell me I'm wrong but it doesn't seem like they eat dog 100% out of choice
edit:
omniburning them alive and more.
that's pretty shitty though

i disagree with hooli's posts a LOT but he is right tbh.
@omni, yeah that shit is fucked up, but so are a lot of our farms, not saying its right, but it seems very one-sided.

I think if you had a pet pig you'd feel the same, but we still eat bacon. I don't think there's anything inherently or morally wrong with eating any animal. They're not asking to eat your pet dog.
EDIT: Oh fair enough if they're torturing them, my point is just about eating assuming they're humane with the killing/farming.

Ricky Gervais has been quite vocal on the subject and he's obviously heavily against it. He posted some pictures to alert the social media masses about what's actually happening there.
This can be quite distressing for some, so only click at your own discretion

they are stealing people's pets
if they raised the dogs for the purpose of eating them, you might have a point, but they are stealing them and using inhumane methods to cook them

What about the awful slaughtering of Tanuki?
Have you seen those things? Adorbs.
Oh wait, somebody could say we're doing that cultural appropriation bullshit by imposing our cracker-ass culture onto their historic festivals.

this is horrifying, but still much less horrifying than the many, many endangered animals that the chinese poach and massacre because they think their horns or fangs or livers or w/e will make their boner last longer
I am dead serious in saying that free distribution of viagra combined with some educational campaigns would save MANY animals in china

Torturing the animals, and stealing animals that are other people's pets is very, very different from raising livestock for meat.
Additionally, while I dislike the idea of eating animals such as dogs, monkeys, etc, I would say it is no more or less 'immoral' than eating beef or chicken. I do, however, think eating carnivorous animals is absolutely stupid from an efficiency standpoint.
Also, this sort of thing happens a lot in SE Asia, but I don't think "culture" is a valid reason to be needlessly cruel.

aww why the fuck would you burn or boil them alive at least kill them first. im fine w/ killing and eating but why make them go through so much pain when theyre still alive, thats pretty barbaric.
Your dog is ugly as fuck.
And don't forget that the US isnt free of animal cruelty: cows having their tails cut off, chickens being raise in extremely tight spaces while being surrounded by other chickens and feces, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnlpNGetfdM

I'm confused, how does signing an online petition stop a festival in china? This reeks of kony2012.
janedoe's dog is the best how could u ever say its ugly
Regardless of anything about morality, it's objectively stupid to eat dogs/cats/almost any animal kept as a pet.
Cows, pigs and chickens have all been raised entirely for their meat for hundreds of years because they're efficient. It's all well and good to try your best to criticize the West for hypocrisy, but it's outright fallacious to compare raising cows for slaughter to catching stray dogs.
The argument that this is happening in poverty-stricken countries is equally fallacious; it's somewhere in high school biology that they go over how much less efficient carnivores are than herbivores, especially with respect to farming.
Furthermore, trying to call out factory farms for being even remotely similar to the situation at hand (torture/inefficient killing methods) is idiotic. No, modern animal farming is not humane relative to traditional farming, but there isn't a chance in hell that it's going to ever be like that, for what should be obvious reasons.

Local officials have *reportedly* said that they will investigate and shut down any section of the festival that includes dog meat.
So far it seems they've only really acknowledged it

Read the article, it still is:
We don't question how every animal in the western world is treated, yet hundreds of documentaries describe it thoroughly, and similarly we treat our food like shit. Similar to what mustard said, I would be MUCH more concerned about the hunting of endangered species in China that is nearly unregulated, as well as their lax animal cruelty laws overall. However, dogs are not intrinsically viewed as ONLY pets in that area. We have pet pigs\goats\birds in the Western World and don't question eating them. You are, without a doubt, imposing European cultural standards on to an area that does not abide by them.

I dont really agree with the torture of animals at all but idk why people gotta catch feelings about whats going on in a whole 'nother country

Actually, raising cows is enormously inefficient from an environmental standpoint, because they are ruminants and therefore naturally produce enormous quantities of methane, which is a significant contributor to climate change:
http://epa.gov/climatechange/ghgemissions/gases/ch4.html
Not to mention the enormous amount of feed they require relative to pigs and chicken as well.
I believe the statistic I saw was, everyone would have a better environmental impact by eating red meat ONE fewer day a week than by eating only organic food 100% of the time.
