is anyone else still able to find a match? i can't find one anymore (get prompted to buy a pass) and it seems like everyone i know is experiencing the same thing.
either way, excited that valve is working on this and i hope they really blow it out of the park with this update. seems to be coming along nicely. hopefully we get a hud refresh and some huge perf enhancements as well.

I can get in and search fine, except it kicks me out as soon as I start searching for a match.
EDIT: Getting the pass required thing now.

Does anyone here have any contacts within Valve? The default settings are in DESPERATE need of updating. FOV should be LOCKED at 90, the default net settings are a mess, there is no menu option to disable phong and ragdolls/gibs, hitsounds/numbers need to be on by default and the default hitsound needs to be made less annoying. Per weapon viewmodel and crosshair options should be added as should black outlined crosshairs (or at least make custom crosshairs work on pure).
Allso this has probably already been said a thousand times but random crits REALLY should be disabled by default in pubs. With them adding competitive to the mix it wouldn't make sense not to. While it doesn't affect the gameplay in competitive it does give new players (the kinds that would be interested in the comp scene) the wrong idea.

thought about random crits: they were made in a time where every class has solely one weapon per slot, and that was valve's attempt to add "randomness", in an artificial way. modern-day TF2 doesn't need a forced randomness, however, because the sheer number of weapons you need to take into account, you're already playing a guessing game that would fit the requirement without issue
there's a reason random crits have been more and more frustrating over the years, after all. it was never fun to begin with, but walking right into a class with a high-damage unlock that crits before you have time to react is significantly worse

I'm not trying to be a dick, don't take it the wrong way - but this hasn't been released yet. It's not done, it's not out. We aren't even supposed to be seeing it. It's not fair to judge it yet.
Your points are absolutely fair (though some are very nitpicky and relatively minor). But it's not out. I am sure a time will come when Valve and our community heads will talk and figure this shit out.
Have some patience!

My complaints are independent of if there is matchmaking or not. These things needed fixed years ago. I believe that players should not be crippled when using the settings accessible through menus. The average puber knows nothing about graphics configs, custom huds, ect.
The addition of matchmaking and a more serious focus on gameplay makes these issues that cannot simply be ignored. These wouldn't even be hard for Valve to fix.

They need to make more class tutorials, really tired of seeing Pyros in pubs not being able to extinguish you, Scouts who keep standing still and pistoling people, Medic who runs with his Syringe gun and just shooting people instead of healing etc. People might be too lazy to complete all of the tutorials, but the best solution for that is to reward a player with a student-like hat that will be given upon completing all tutorials, or some other kind of a reward.
Also they should add more Default weapons, Shotgun and Gunboats change Soldier's playstyle significantly, Medic should have all of his Mediguns unlocked, due to differing playstyles again, Engineer should have Gunslinger available, Pyro needs a Degreaser and Heavy needs a Sandvich. All those unlocks significantly change the playstyle of each class, not having them unlocked from the beginning just lowers the variety of the game for new players, it is also really useful when Item Servers go down, being stuck with a perma kritz or gunslinger is not always ideal in hl and 6s.
Lower the price for weapons in store to a bare minimum. Valve is aware of Tf2 Economy, I feel like it's kind of a scam to sell a Phlog for like 7 or something euros, when you can literally just craft it almost from nothing.
And of course make tutorials for 6v6 and HL, at least for 6v6, so people have a basic idea of how the gamemode works like.

popcorpThey need to make more class tutorials.
I would really like to see some basic explosive jumping tutorials added (something like what QL has). Maybe some MGE style videos made by top players in the competitive community accessible though the main menu.
popcorpAlso they should add more Default weapons,
Weapons and other gameplay affecting items should not be subjected to the drop system. All weapons should be accessible by default. If they want to ease new players into it then they can make weapons unlock after a certain amount of playtime on said class. If they insist on making the default weapons still drop (due to the f2p model) they should add a 20$ item to the store that unlocks all the weapons in the game forever. Not everyone has an interest in the TF2 economy and trading. I certainly don't.

I think getawhale's overall point is related to him pointing to the fact that this is all still a work-in-progress, but I don't think that means this discussion isn't worthwhile; after all, most ppl here know nearly every command that's objectively better on a certain setting, so it's good for us to point out what should be up by default. (and really, I think that a big TFTV-made wishlist that's spread on reddit and to valve would do wonders, but I'm no community manager so I could be talking out of my ass)
since this is kind of wishlist discussion to new players anyways:
-in-game tips should be heavily updated, focused so it only talks about the things the player can currently do with their class and loadout, and then show up every respawn. if possible, make it context-heavy; did a player die from afterburn when you had a mad milk in your loadout? point out that it can douse the flames.
-going into more detail on what popcorp said on default weapons, there is not a melee default that isn't outclassed by another melee weapon. this is especially jarring because, unlike other weapon slots (wherein they will likely be as stylized as their default counterparts), the melee defaults look plain and boring compared to anything else:
https://i.imgur.com/7EOcaM3.jpg
at the very least, defaults should be either tossed out with varying different melee weapons becoming default, but more preferably, defaults should be redesigned.
-the advanced options menu is a massive mess. make it a properly tabbed menu, like how the current options menu already looks, so people who don't want to do a bunch of CFG bullshit can still quickly modify settings.

Im on it :D but yeah, would be good to have something more official. Altough that doesn't seem likely atm. But If the series takes off I can try reaching out to them.

Screwball wouldn't you put dingalings and ragdolls and custom HUDs toward the very bottom of the wishlist though? I would argue they don't really affect a new player's ability to learn and play the game. The weapon and balance discussion is probably a lot more pertinent, isn't it?

custom HUDs, sure (assuming they actually intend to heavily optimize the default HUD like they said), ragdolls is questionable but it should be a general graphic option, but hitsounds need to be on by default, absolutely. it's like having auto-reload off, you're not hurting yourself too hard, but you're still choosing the objectively worse option for no gain

The default settings are absolutely horrendous to play with and most certainly do affect your ability to play. I seen many pubbers go up significantly in skill level after a couple hours of adjustment to a proper config. The default interp is so bad for projectiles it makes playing on lan feel like playing euro.
The point is settings that are objectively better in every way should be on by default our at the very least easily accessible to the layman.

tbh the most important default settings that they need to change are fast weapon switch and interp.
Having to click after selecting a weapon to change to it is so bad.

They are very well aware of our map pool as mana said.
There are all maps but 2(sunshine and product) from etf2l map pool, if we dont count pro suffixes.
I am pretty sure it will look similiar to cs go matchmaking, with active duty and reserve maps.
Also, interesting part.
Recently in past 1 month there has been activity on servers with 12 people in, which means Valve is betatesting it, and that it may be out soon.
EDIT: Currently there is no win limit, but there is 45 min time limit

trash-in-game tips should be heavily updated, focused so it only talks about the things the player can currently do with their class and loadout, and then show up every respawn. if possible, make it context-heavy; did a player die from afterburn when you had a mad milk in your loadout? point out that it can douse the flames.
Uh holy yes. In-game tips while you're waiting to respawn, kind of like the ones on the loading screens of some games (StarCraft 2 & Warcraft 3 come to mind), relating to how you died previously or to your class in general. That would be amazing and super easy to implement.
