How should you play mge as a solly to improve your dm as much as possible in the least ammount of time?
Like is there any specific minset I should have? Any specific things I should do as in, trying to surf as much as possible? not use shotty, or use shotty a lot? not surf a lot? only use gunboats? counterjump surfers? just go for airshots all the time even though you know you'll miss the airshot?
I've been stuck on my current DM skill level for a very long time now as a solly and recently it has started to get very frustrating, and I'm also getting very salty when I perform bad or just get destroyed all the time because I feel like I should be so much better by now. It just feels like the hours I put into doing mge/dm servers are being wasted because I just dont improve (been like this for months now), it feels as if going to work but not getting paid if you understand what I mean.
I'd appreciate any tips you guys have for me in how to improve, play mge etc. And yes I do also play scrims, pugs, lobbies and such. TIA

dont focus on winning, focus on hitting a lot of hard to hit shots
if you play in a way that limits the number of hard shots you have to hit (shotgun denying, shooting your opponents on the floor or prefiring rockets etc) you'll get less practice

By "knowing you'll miss", that's probably just a really hard to hit shot. It would probably benefit you to try hit it.
But it sounds like what's limiting you is your fear of getting destroyed by better players, so you might gimp your practice and play worse players. Just remind yourself it's a practice mod, and play the "good players" on a private server with no score limit. This shouldn't be a problem in DM, which I'd recommend over mge.

Obi This shouldn't be a problem in DM, which I'd recommend over mge.
I don't think that DM is better than MGE in the long run because people play retardedly agressive in DM since they know that they will get hp back whenever they get a kill. This will transfer into 6s and will stop making you think about taking 1v1's and stuff (there's more than enough proof in the current high tier in etf2l).
In terms of MGE: Try to find out what you are doing wrong, for example not hitting splash rockets or shotgun shots and try to fix that. I recommend tr_aim_training_b13 for practicing your sg aim and muscle memory and tr_newbots (which is basically like Ammomod in MGE) to practice juggling and splash rockets / directs.

Yeah that's how I try to play mge, it just doesn't seem to have any effect on me anymore in regards to improving my dm :s

Yeah as I said, I do try to play really good players in mge but at some point I get tired of it sometimes and I just get really salty and frustrated at the game and I can't really help it, it's not fun getting destroyed all the time. Lately I've been starting to disabling the hud in mge servers though, that way I can't see the scores.
I do try ti play DM servers as well whenever I can, but most of the time they're always full and I just go play mge instead :/

I used to play those tr maps before, but I quickly got very bored at it and after like 5mins I can't stand playing them anymore, it just gets way too boring for me.
And yeah a problem I have is like missing easy rockets or splash hits, that really frustrates me sometimes. I shoot the rocket very closely at their feet but do no dmg at all or low dmg in some instances, like on spire, when I jump the spire and I shoot a rocket at the solly's feet and sometimes it just does like 60dmg even though it hit very closely to him. These kind of things really piss me off and then just makes it even harder for me to hit shots.

I forgot to mention the following: What most people do is getting into the habit of predicting every shot instead of actually AIMING your rockets or even just waste their rockets to switch to their sg asap. Try to not get into the habit (I did that myself for a long time); ammomod helps you to get rid of the prediction stuff.

Don't play spire or older versions of badlands mid if getting frustrated is a problem for you, those maps clipping sucks. Listen to music whilst you train, on granary mid, for example, you don't need sound as much as on spire, and tr maps become less boring this way.
I get that you're going for the hard shots, but are you going "differently" every time that you miss? With that I mean, are you trying to shoot at a different height of the enemy's jump, from a different position, tracking instead of flicking or flicking instead of tracking, taking your time to aim or shooting as soon as possible? Or are you just always trying the same technique, hoping to get better at it? Sometimes said technique just doesn't work with you no matter how much you train it, and you must change the way your trying to hit. Try to identify what makes shots hard for you and go from there, avoid falling on the trap of mindlessly practicing hours on end, you should rationally analyze and structure your every action.
Or not, dunno, some people seem to just be naturals heh

Most of the advice in this thread is, in my opinion, not useful or informative. It seems to reflect people's personal experiences in developing their own style of playing TF2. I spent most of my time practicing mechanics in MGE on my path to improvement, and its something that I've thought a fair amount about.
The first thing you should do is type "hud_saytext_time 0, voice_enable 0" into the console. This will prevent you from talking or listening to anyone in the mge server. 99% of the time, you should not talk or listen to anyone in the mge server if you are really trying to improve. Not that some people are not helpful, but honestly there's just too many flaming idiots to play MGE for any length of time without muting them all.
The key to learning in MGE is focus. Its very very easy to slip into a rhythm and play mge mindlessly, but this way you will not improve very quickly. You will build muscle memory, but only as your unconscious mind begins to grasp the game. Every shot that you miss, you need to consciously think "why?". Just take a mental note of your mistake each time that you make one.
- He was in X position
- I was in Y position
- My rocket was sub-optimal because...
My point is not to push you to try to memorize every shot you ever miss (that's stupid), rather I'm advocating that you pay careful attention to everything you do wrong. Not to make some list that you might later refer back to, but just to engage your brain in actually understanding how to play better. When you go into a fight and die instead of fragging (you get 20 of these in every lost game of MGE), ask yourself why you lost? Maybe you missed all your rockets because his movement was too good; think about where you should have shot or what position you should have moved to to win the fight.
Building up the mechanics to execute fights the exact way that you plan to is a process that just takes time. Conscious engagement with this process helps you to at least build a framework for understanding how to make those "plans". I believe it was a chess master who described all processes of learning as fundamentally composed of four stages:
1: Unconscious Incompetence (you don't even know why you suck)
2: Conscious Incompetence (you know why you suck)
3: Conscious Competence (you know how not to suck)
4: Unconscious Competence (you just do it right)
The notion of conscious focus on mistakes and improvement is also very applicable to any time that you are playing tf2, not just MGE. In a match scenario, developing understandings of how the enemy team is playing individually can be extremely valuable if they allow themselves to become predictable (which the vast majority of players do).
TL;DR: The smarter and more focused you play, the better and more precise your aim will become.
Can't help you with airshots that shit is 100% muscle memory for me you just gotta practice practice practice. LUCKILY airshots don't actually win games much of the time. Focusing on ground game is just a LOT more applicable to actually being good at playing soldier (aka frag scouts).

I dont know exactly how I aim my airshots right now, but most of the time I just flick my airshots and just keep doing it from the same position, using the same technique and I usually take my time to aim, but sometimes I just shoot at the first best chance I get to hopefully hit an airshot. Lately I have started to hit way less airshots, could be because I just mindlessly try to flick aim most of the time? Maybe I should try to track him first then flick aim? Dont know really...
EDIT: I also have some issues on hitting directs in ammomod, dont know why but it's really hard for me to hit direct rockets on sollies , the rockets always miss by a bit or they're too short, as in the rockets hit short to his feet.
Also, what's the deal with some high level sollies spamming jump all the time? Is that a good thing? Should I aim to be like that, spam jump whenever I'm in a fight as a solly? or just jump whenever I wanna surf something etc. Never really got the hang of when to jump and when not to as a solly.

Dunno about the others but to me it's just become a thing of boredom. I just can't be bothered to walk around everywhere like a turtle and crouchjumping most the time feels like I'm moving faster (even though I'm probably not).
Most soldiers use it to ride others' rockets. It's essentially a counter jump that's not being as frowned upon because when the enemy soldier jumps you, you can use his rocket to give yourself height advantage.

Only hit spacebar if it will benefit you, whether it be using it to surf a shot, or dodge a shot, spamming it makes your movement more predictable and you gain nothing.

I tried a lot of different aiming styles to see what I was comfortable with and what I was better with, and used that to build the foundation for my aiming. I would watch the best aimers like Mike, clockwork, sheep, b4nny on their respective classes and tried to replicate the aiming styles to my desire until I found what's best for me, and then used MGE to build upon that and refine it so that my aim was a lot less "copied" and more unique to me.
I worked with a lot of different viewmodels and I actually use viewmodels as soldier because it was most comfortable, but for the past two years I've had so many different settings that I finally settled down around January this year, and started to improve beyond MGE.
tr_walkway, tr_rocket_shooting2, and tr_newbots are all extremely good and people give them a bad wrap for not having an "airstrafe" option, but it builds an amazing foundation and you find yourself hitting all the shots that you really need to hit if you play with repetition.
You may find, however, that if you use good knowledge in game that you will be able to outthink opponents with better aim than you and you will win fights off pure judgement and awareness, because maybe you can out-position someone or maybe you can out-ammo-manage someone.
I hope this helped.

I don't agree with people who say you should always try and play the best player in the server. You should always try and play people better than you yes, but it is 1000x more helpful to play a close game against another low-level player than to get 20-0'd by an invite level player, which is really just a waste of everyone's time.

Find a friend about the same skill level or better and play with him, this way you'll ensure not ending up against players aiming to win at all costs, and both will improve more, and likely have a better time while doing so.
I'd also recommend to find couple guys like that, so you don't always play against the same guy, because you might start to memorize one's movement habits and so, it's good to practice against different players in general. Have fun!
