One more note on skins, if they force skins, could they be looking to implement team skins for matchmaking? Similar to stickers in CS? Why bother adding them if 90% of the game would disable them, forcing it expands the userbase
again, nobody cares about the skins themselves, its the major FPS hit caused by really terrible implementation
Has anyone even tried dx9? I get 2 more fps on dx9 then dx8 lol

I don't know why, but I tried it 2 days ago and it was literally unplayable.
I got about 30-60 fps in dm while I get 120-200 with dx81
I wouldn't mind playing it if not the fps issue.

I'm sure Valve are actually very aware of the performance issues in dx9. They aren't stupid, they know what a competitive game needs to be competitive (see CSGO and dota). I'm feeling optimistic that this means they'll be improving the dx9 performance significantly. I can also see them clamping down significantly on customisability. Correct me if I'm wrong but in CSGO and dota you can't turn viewmodels off and can't have custom HUDs etc? I could see TF2 going in that direction but I'd hope they significantly improve the default HUD and viewmodel fov first.

then you are in a disadvantage if you play with distracting skins/botkillers/festives.
I would really be pissed off if they just took away all customability from the game, that's one of the better aspects of the game.

iirc in CSGO you used to be able to have custom huds but somebody found some major exploit and they took them out to fix it and never put them back. I don't play dota but I have seen people with different huds on streams so I think you can do it but I'm not sure how. The non-gameplay related stuff usually stays customizable but ya you can't turn off viewmodels in cs. I wouldn't fear for custom huds leaving or commands being disabled.

It's the only reason anyone like Muselk made it big. If you don't know his name, you know his outfit.
That aside, honestly I'm thinking it's dx9-only due to a bunch of outline crap they're gonna add. Things they'll add to make it look/feel more like an objective based team game, rather than the mess publics are. I'm not sure how they'll do it, but that's the only upside to dx9, right? Skins, shine and outlines?

I have heard of this guy and know he's a youtuber but I don't memorize the hats of every person I see on youtube. I really doubt what hats he wears has anything to do with his success.

i like playing dress up with barbie dolls in my free time and pretending that i'm an interior designer
We should not over react in my opinion. I still believe that Valve are not that stupid to block all dx8 players. Let's wait for the next update and see..hopefully optimisation..

Try setting mat_picmip set to -1. It seems when you make the skins lower quality its way worse than not.

The huds are actually unlocks in dota: http://dota2.gamepedia.com/HUD_Skins
Doubt they'd do this with TF2 huds though.

DavidTheWinI can also see them clamping down significantly on customisability.
I doubt valve would want to deal with the whole comp and half of the pub community flipping their shit. The ability to customize tf2 to the extend you can(even though it still pales in comparison with games like quake) has been one of the key features since release.

Is it possible to disable outlines on dropped weapons you can switch for and on your teammates (when spectating) on dx9?

I use dx9 and I haven't had that so yes, but IDK how to disable it.

people concerned about them removing the option to hide viewmodels should consider that the option has been available for years in the advanced options menu in-game
There are also two launch options that few people seem to know about the yield significantly better fps (in general):
-high (sets tf2 to high priority mode)
-nod3d9ex (not sure what it does but when I played I a laptop it literally doubled my fps)

-high doesn't work anymore afaik.
i don't know much about -nod3d9ex beside that it force to use some kind of directX version (and fixed my mumble overlay when it was White).

wickedplayer494I'm personally glad that DX9 is a requirement. DX8 is extremely antiquated (it's from even before the Windows XP days). Sure you might complain "b-b-but my FPS!", but do you see CS:GO players playing on DX8 at Valve-sponsored tournaments? Didn't think so.
My laptop struggles to play TF2 at a constant 40 FPS, that is with dx 80, a insanely good FPS config, AND a resolution of 854x480, if I was forced to play on DX 90, tf2 would be unplayable for me

Maybe you should stop playing on a toaster. This is like saying "they're forcing me to play soccer on grass when my shoes have flat surfaces and have shit grip on it and great grip on concrete, literally unplayable on grass, WTF"
If you want to play on Valve MM, you play on DX9. If you don't, buy a server and play on that. You can even turn off sv_pure and play without any effects for even more FPS!

It still worked 3 months ago. If not, going to task manager and setting tf2s priority to high is always an option aswell

Thanks to the skins, CsGo became big (mostly after Operation Bravo), it attracted a lot of new players, especially traders and so did the scene grew on that, on Skins.
I won't be against dx9 as long as there's a huge optimization patch that comes along with or before Matchmaking.

MIndMaybe you should stop playing on a toaster. This is like saying "they're forcing me to play soccer on grass when my shoes have flat surfaces and have shit grip on it and great grip on concrete, literally unplayable on grass, WTF"
the problem is that not everyone can afford good pc, you can't just say "Maybe you should stop playing on a toaster.", some people spend all money on studies and/or on food, flat and clothes or are 10-15 yrs old and parrents aren't willing to buy them new pc.
and now my actual thoughts (like somebody cares): it'll hurt many people but it allows some stuff to be inplemented (outlines, more skins( = more money for valve = more money for tf2)) and nobody forces you to play mm whitch (hopefully) will be only gamemode/place you will forced to play with dx9, if they just remove option to switch to dx8 then they'll make many people angry, so hopefuly they won't do it. but generaly it's just bad, because with dx8 game feels different (better for someone) and people who spent 12k hrs playing on dx8 switching will be (hard maybe) annoying and uncornfotable and bad feeling customer is not a good thing
but i'm sure that somebody in this community will find way (if needed) how to launch tf2 in dx8 (there is a way how to play tf2 in dx7, dont know if it still works ) and (hopefully) ETF2L, ESEA and UGC wont force you to play on dx9 using server settings, you might be forced to on lans/events sponzored by valve tho

I've never played with dx8 and i have constant 120FPS with DX9. Damn..i have an AMD 8350 and a HD7850 gpu. Don't know what you did to your PC to build in a bottleneck. Did you check the DX9 setting with your DX8 FPS config?
