Don't think I saw this posted here but it's not a bad Kotaku article. It's always nice to see TF2 getting support

knowledgeable esports expert M'aiqIt is exactly right that competitive TF2 doesn’t resemble everyone else’s TF2. They’re basically not even the same game, and if you’re used to the unmanaged chaos of regular TF2, competitive TF2 just doesn’t seem like much fun.
Basically, competitive TF2 is TF2 from 2008, and hasn’t really advanced much beyond that. The only way you could play a more primitive version of the game is load up the Orange Box for XBOX 360. Competitive TF2's problem is that they demand everyone go back in time to when they play, rather than evolve into what everyone else plays. Competitive match making will not help the comp scene get big.
It's a bubble, you read it here first, time to pub!

Really? You want people to listen to your reasoning because you have 150+ cosmetics? I’m either being trolled or I’m exposing myself to some serious, life threatening toxin. "

as someone who unlocked the notice for 1,000,000 matches in melee by offing myself on mute city over and over again, I'm not quite sure what all this "tournament" hubbub is about nor why it matters

Since when did people take comment sections of any website seriously?? There will always be a vocal minority of idiots.
This is actually a really good writeup, props to sideshow and enigma for representing the tf2 community so well. It's nice to see the competitive side of tf2 getting mainstream exposure, people outside of our closed community are starting to pay attention to it and I hope this trend continues.

the actual competitive tf2 players is the minority. these guys actually represent the majority of tf2's general community. you'd see this dumb shit every time if not for the competitive scene.

Oh no, a game that isn't already made in a competitive format, where the community has to set up restrictions to make it more serious and enjoyable, what is this? Meanwhile if Valve had done this at launch, nobody would've been angry at the class restrictions.

Maybe because these are the people that are the majority of TF2 and Valve wants to cater to them as a priority?

This is valve's own fault. they designed and launched this game with a casual gaming experience in mind and is being treating tf2 as such for almost a decade. realistically speaking, releasing matchmaking isn't gonna solve anything until comments like those are not the representation of the majority of this game's player-base. it's foolish to create a player-base with a casual mindset and then expect them to have the maturity or sense of judgment to abide to a competitive structure. you'd literally have to brainwash these people to negate the mentality they created during years of casual tf2

Or just make a better presentation for it. That's literally all the updates are in TF2's history. Making each new component a seemingly master crafted experience.

But is it too late to save pro TF2 from esports obscurity? Will Valve have to destroy the pro game in order to save it?
what's the going rate for a professional tf2 player these days

Some of the people in the comments think this about competitive
"It is exactly right that competitive TF2 doesn’t resemble everyone else’s TF2. They’re basically not even the same game, and if you’re used to the unmanaged chaos of regular TF2, competitive TF2 just doesn’t seem like much fun.

I think that people should be educated about how competitive is such a dynamic and interesting format.
