I found a post (that I've now lost) from clockwork (I think) saying it's worth learning to bhop in TF2 because it can be practiced on rollouts (so you may as well), you actually go faster if you're jumping off downward slopes, helps avoid rockets (though not scouts) and you can get a script that makes it really easy? He mentioned a mouse wheel script, but my google-fu is failing me and all I get are rocket jump scripts, pre-2009 scripts.
At a guess, is it just this?
alias A "+jump; bind MWHEELDOWN B"
alias B "-jump; bind MWHEELDOWN A"
bind MWHEELDOWN A

bind MWHEELDOWN "+jump;-jump"
It's too late in the evening for writing code.

I swear that didn't work the first time I tried it. Also it doesn't seem to be more reliable than timing space for jump anyway. :(

chances are if you need this much assistance to bhop you aren't doing right/shouldn't bother

bunnyhopping is also not too hard to just feel out manually with spacebar

when you scroll your mouse down, it's like pressing the mwheeldown button lots times in a row, so just binding mwheeldown/up to +jump works fine (since -jump is executed when it's 'released')
and mouse wheel is like 100% reliable in tf2 and single player source games (less so in the counter strikes i think), no reason to usse space imo

bind mwheeldown +jump
it sounds logical to bind it to both mwheelup and down but in practice mwheeldown is sufficient and easier to get a hold of in my experience, this is what all the surfers and bhops i know use

then wtf am i doing lol
just because it's frame perfect doesn't mean it's impossible, it's a rhythm thing. what i normally do is listen for the sound of one footstep, and if i hear only one, that's a sound cue to know i did it right. i generally go 10-15 hops without screwing up on spacebar over mousewheel, which i only get 4-8.

how do you tell you are doing bhops? if you are talking about bhop servers with the server-sided bhop plugin that you just hold down the spacebar and gain speed then i assume its ok.
try playing half life and bhop with the spacebar there, then you'll see that what you are doing isn't bhoping, its just jumping

you can test bhops on jump maps that have uncrouched bounce heights, but you can usually only do one bhop or in some cases two on the same surface. if you bhop on a tele surface and don't get teleported you know you bhopped.

I made this a while ago idk if it might help someone trying to learn and/or practice, so I'll just leave a link here.
I am currently working on another map that should be better.

you can check if your bhops actually give you extra speed by using the rocket/sticky jumper, detjumping and listening to the woosh sound
bhopping in tf2 is practically useless except for some jumps that aren't useful in a competitive environment unless you cheat which would make you faster by a negligible amount anyway which is like 1,1%

spacebar is completely viable for bhops, if you get the timing down its just as good as mousewheel

MelonTFspacebar is completely viable for bhops, if you get the timing down its just as good as mousewheel
I mean sure, if you can consistently use spacebar to time bunnyhops then I wish all power to you. But the reason scroll is more popular is because of consistency, it has a massive advantage over spacebar in that regard.

hl2dm has a bigger timeframe to jump without losing all of your speed, so it's easier there

i dont know man, when doing strats like the one on ASDF the mousewheel never seems to be more consistent than just pressing space at the right time

If you ever played half-life 2 then doing these 'bhops' is the easiest thing ever as the time window where you start losing speed is much bigger because of the sprint the player has in hl2/hl2dm
Bunnyhopping in games like tf2/cs and half-life 1 is by jumping on a time window of 1-2 frames and strafing in order to gain velocity.
You have much less air-control in hl2 and bhopping on that game is closer to Quake Live than TF2.

all im saying is that it's possible to do it all with the spacebar, it may be a little difficult I didn't switch to mouse2 for jump until late 2011 but before that in q3/cpma/ql/css/hl2dm i used spacebar to jump for the majority of the time and I was able to bhop well... now in css it was MUCH more difficult than say hl2dm or quake
