Apparently professional TF2 players were cheating in the prestigious UGC TF2 league. I hope someone writes them a correction. It's embarrassing for everyone.

Yeah, competitive would be the word to use. I'm not sure if PCGAMER actually cares, though, sadly. I hope they change it too, though.
Bilbert, I think you need some new glasses:
It's not clear exactly how many people have been affected, but it includes nearly 170 professional players in the TF2 UGC league.
It does not say prestigious anywhere! No need to be a dick to a league you might not appreciate or even play in :X
And barely anything in comp TF2 is professional as there are not many players with actual contracts and there definitely were some pro players in the mix that got banned.

Prestigious in Bilbert's context is 100% warranted sarcasm. UGC is the lowest level league we have in the scene, the furthest you could get from professional players. This is hilariously awful journalism.
I don't think it really shows tf2 in a negative light. Most of the responses were positive, people are happy that cheaters are getting banned. Someone responded with "main reason I stop playing tf2. Nearly ever server was full of cheaters". So this could really get people back into this game.

Sorry for coming across as disparaging to UGC. I actually appreciate the UGC league and the work all its admins do for its players (including me). I meant basically that UGC doesn't have any particular standards for entry, other than not having a VAC ban of course. Perhaps I should have used "exclusive" sarcastically, instead of "prestigious."

Well on the positive note, it makes the TF2 comp scene seem huge lol

Daggeris that a pre beta picture?
I think so. Can hardly blame PCGAMER; Valve still uses the images on the Steam Store page.

i think the most accepted version of "professional" comes from earning money from what you do; be it prizepools or salaries, but does not have to be both
see ex-iBuyPower (CS:GO)
afaik UGC has never had a prizepool (correct me if I'm wrong)

This is true. I was playing HL before CSGO even came released. And yes, HL is more popular now than 2012 and before.
This is typical journalism really, just elevating "competitive" to "professional", probably just to attract views. They likely know nothing about UGC and watched some maxbox video.
