Hello all, I've played a few of lobbies and I feel like im ready for pugs, I've been in lots of lobbies where people actually talked and I feel like im pretty good on the communication side of things and I understand the game rather well. However I was wondering if there was a higher DM skill level in pugs, because my DM is what I feel needs the most improvement. Thanks for the advice!

PUG.NA is much higher level than Lobbies, but don't let that scare you from trying it out.
However, I recommend trying to connect to the Mumble server before adding up, and let people know you're on the new side. Generally people will be pretty welcoming, though you might run into the occasional idiot, who you can safely ignore.

the DM in pugna is definitely higher than in lobbies, but that just means that you're going to be forced to play smart and focus on helping out your team in other ways, like comms and switching to heavy at last :D

go into dm server's if that is your weakness because the dm and level of smartness is higher in pugs.just click on the right hand side on one of the dm servers.

pug.na is a lot better than lobbies but it will never be the same as playing on a team. get involved with competitive tf2 and join a team even if you think you aren't good enough. it's a completely different game (not literally). persistence is key.

in my experience, pugging for a long time without playing on a team made me develop bad habits and a bad ego (as a player, not a person).

In all seriousness, I ring for a few teams. I recommend it, it's fun, it's chill and you learn a lot.

I would recommend you to give a try to the #tf2mix PUGs, it's going to be more competitive and more organized than TF2Lobby. If you want to play more advanced games you can try #tf2.pug.na but at the same time you are never guaranteed to play, this system is kind of harsh on the newer players.

For more information have a look at this group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/tf2mix

I think you can also try to get into a private PUG groups where they host the events in Mumble while you sit in a server, these PUGs can be very fun and are the best to meet new people. I could not tell you though which ones are the hot ones at the moment.

If my inference is correct, I believe that you are fairly new to the 6s scene. If you base your 6s knowledge off of lobbies, I recommend that you try newbie mixes. These will help you with your game sense and your overall knowledge of the game. If you feel ready to pug, I recommend trying #tf2mix, not #pug.na. This is because mix is a lot friendlier to the new players, and you have a MUCH higher chance of getting picked to play. I also think you should keep in mind, that pug.na usually just picks the same people over and over again, dont let getting fat kidded ruin your confidence.

@14 Its not that im new to competitive tf2, I've been watching streams and casts for about a year now, so my knowledge is based off of that, I just haven't been actually playing 6s all that long. but yeah I tried some newbie mixes and those are great. thanks for the advice everyone.

Lobbies are pretty much only good for fucking around and maybe practicing your rollouts and DM skill. I use them instead of pubs.

The best way to practice, as mentioned before, is to get a team together - even if your team loses every game, playing with the same group + working on comms and strategy is the best way to get effective at 6v6.

tf2.pug was better than tf2mix, IMO, because they actually had chicago servers, but when the latter started up it completely killed off the former

If you want a gentler intro to organized 6v6 you could try the crit fail pug group. The skill level is under tf2mix and most people are pretty nice. You sign up through a website and there's a fancy new UI that was just rolled out.

Just join the steam group http://steamcommunity.com/groups/crit-fail and you'll get a notification when a pug goes up then just click sign up on the page.
The web page is http://hl.crit-fail.net/

Or rather it helps bridge the gap between a pub and pugs.

Try to make friends that are on Open teams and are connected into decent pug groups. I've always found pug groups to be more enjoyable than ones through IRC.

I did the jump from lobbies to pug.na
I played medic for a good 200 games before playing a fragging class.
When you play medic you get to learn and build an incredible gamesense, especially when playing with experienced players.
While playing medic you get to know how to position yourself as a medic but also position yourself as a pocket and a demo.
You get to improve your movements and to build a sense in anticipating your enemy next moves.
Then when you get to play other classes, even if your DM isn't the best, you already have the basics, the gamesense, the movements and the positioning.
My scout DM really blows but the speed and the double jump of the scout just makes everything easier, youre already use to dodge stuff, now you do the same but you are going faster and have a double jump.. What more can you ask?
Same thing goes for soldier with the rocket jump and the great distances you can go across in so little time..
Thats just how I see things and I think the best way to learn tf2 6s Is by starting as medic.

Don't give up and take all the advices you can.
