So I've been trying to improve on my rocket jumping a lot to make my roaming better, so I've been doing a lot of jump maps.

While I've beaten quite a few jump maps at this point, I still feel like my rj's are clumsy and just not all around that much better than before.

Does anyone have any advice about translating the jumping skill required from jump maps to real gameplay? Is it just as simple as practicing more and getting more consistent?

Practice jumps on ESEA maps that you know you'll use often. Maybe practice the jumps that you won't do all that often but might find yourself doing eventually. Example: jumping from badlands lower lobby door on gray bridge to wall jumping off of the right wall into choke (bomb scenario).

bball is the way to go. it teaches you how to jump under pressure, avoid being shot in the air and how to get from point a to point b fast. add me if you want to play.

Play jump movies in the background while jumping and listen to the music. It helps me because it makes me think i'm in a jump movie and i'm important. While doing this, just go on listen server and jump around in ESEA maps, like kirby said.

Also BBall like Hooli said :>

more jump maps. Chances are the ones you've beaten are the notoriously easy ones like rush, beef, and adventure. jumping is an enormous subculture in TF2, and unless you're zooming through soar or baqu you don't really have a reason not to keep doing it.

The more you jump, the better understanding of the mechanics involved you gain, and with those you can take any jump anywhere without scripting it beforehand.

I can beat more challenging maps than those ones (cheval, bomb, etc.), but yeah I get your point.

Off to the bball court and some more jump maps until i'm just more consistent.

You might find jumping around in empty 5cp maps more helpful for your pug/scrim/match rocketjumping. At least that's what Jager says.

Try not to do jump maps in local servers. RJing with 0ms ping is noticeably different than with 50ms ping.

This.

If you only practice jumping on jump maps and never on actual maps, you'll most likely be subpar at jumping in-game. You need a healthy mix of the two.

Play very difficult jump maps that you know you can't beat (baqu, soar, ice) and try not to focus really hard on your mechanics. Chances are in games you will jump with pure muscle memory and you will rarely be thinking about where to place rockets/strafe/etc. Play with music on or talk in mumble or something to distract yourself. This is the best way that I know to get muscle memory down for harder jumps.

Also do surf maps.

This. Being incredible on jump maps won't get you much until you have sound game sense and map knowledge. Focus more on using map terrain and features to your benefit when you want to get from point A to B.

What do you mean by "my rj's are clumsy"? could you be more specific? I feel like the help in this thread is more or less grasping at straws, trying to address your issue with general advice.

You should definately play on ESEA maps and practice jumping there. Sometimes, I feel that the high ping/connect of the servers affect so much in terms of your jumps that you need to adjust to it in order to feel comfortable overall. I remembered nailing every single jump in a listenserver/ jump server, but when I play on an ESEA map, I had the same feeling as you did.

By clumsy I mean that I'll rush my jumps and mis-time some of them if i'm trying a double jump or something, which usually results in me falling short and then out of panic I'll try to jump again and just mash keys and go straight up in the air about 8 feet.

I think my main problem is that I panic. In jump maps and pubs I'm never in a rush so I can just take my time with the jump, and they always turn out better.

As for just going around and jumping in the ESEA maps, I always just use rocket jumper in pre games of scrims and pugs and just jump around. But aside from a handful of jumps per map, I don't want to just practice specific jumps, I feel like I'd be hindered if I try to script all my jumps. I'd rather just improve my overall jumping abilities, and jump maps are much more fun for that than jumping in a random server.

There are only so many jumps that are useful* in ESEA maps, and only so many ways to do them. When people say that you can only take so much from jump maps into scrims/matches, it's because of that very reason. You won't find many opportunities, if any at all, to do a double wall jump leading to a skip jump without it affecting either a) your ammo count when it's probably needed since you're bombing, b) your health count even with gunboats or c) both.

* When I say useful, I mean jumps that are effective and aid you in whatever it is that you're doing (in this case, bombing). Something like jumping from the first badlands forward spawn to valley entrance into house is a nice think to be able to do consistently, but it's not necessary let alone effective or useful for roamer bombing or bombing in general.

It's better to learn how to consistently make those effective and useful jumps in ESEA maps than it is to learn how to consistently make those cool, pretty looking jumps you will find exclusively in jump maps.

To be honest though, I think it's more of a problem with you being nervous about messing up. There's always that chance you will screw up your bomb or won't but will fail to do what you were going for (dropping/popping medic or whatever), but what's important is that you tried and the more you try the less nervous you will be and ultimately the better you will become at doing it.

I think it's mainly due to nervousness/pressure. I know lots of people (I used to be like this too) who was always looking to prove that I could do something perfectly every time and ended up messing up more than succeeding, mostly due to nerves.

Eventually you may get comfortable enough with RJing in general that if you see a split second opportunity, you'll be able to create a quick jump on the fly, but if you're having trouble doing that, I've always found it helpful (for almost all parts of play, not just jumping) to make sure you take your time and do the action properly and not rushed/panicked.

It's hard, but remember, like what kirby is saying, all the nervousness you have is in your head, but if you keep attempting them, they will become like second nature to you. Just try to keep a level head and carry on.
