So I am moving off to college in a couple weeks to a relatively small dorm. What appliances/furniture would you guys recommend having? As of right now the only thing I am definitely getting is a minifridge.

Double check that you can take a minifridge, some places won't let you.

It will depend entirely on what they'll let you bring in, while electric burners may be nice most dorms ban those (fire hazard/make you eat the cafeteria food).

May I inquire as to which school you are attending? That can help us narrow down what is allowed.

If you havent taken a tour yet, definitely do that. A lot of times there will already be a mini fridge/microwave in the room. I would also highly recommend getting a rug if you have hardwood floors/tiles.

Are you going to have a roommate/roommates? If you are, you should make sure to contact them so you can figure out who's bringing what - showing up with 2 mini-fridges isn't really necessary, although I knew roomie pairs who would stack one on top of the other.

Some things I'd recommend that might fall under the radar in your first year include ibuprofen, polysporin, an extra set of sheets (even if you do your laundry on the regular, and particularly if you're sharing your room, you may find yourself with a sudden need for clean bedding), a garbage can with a lid, and a good thermos/water bottle.

Speaking of laundry, I suggest you get one of those mesh bags with a cord - you'll save a lot of space compared to a full-size laundry basket, and it will be easier to cart to the laundry room provided you're not one of the Chosen Ones who lives on the same floor as the laundry unit in your dorm.

For my first two years of school I had a standard dry erase board and markers, but then I discovered a poster-sized dry erase calendar, and that thing was incredible.

And finally, no dorm room is complete without this guy:

Good luck with your first year! :)

there's basically nothing you can do in a microwave that you cant in a toaster oven and food tastes better 100% of the time from a toaster oven

At my school it was unnecessary to bring a microwave as there was one in the common room down the hall. I'd also suggest not bringing very much stuff in general cuz I know I brought tons of stuff and when it came time to move out it was a nightmare trying to fit all my stuff in the car.

Depending on the school, they really frown on having your own wifi setup. They used to hunt people down in my dorm if you had something set up.
