History of TF2 prize money

I used Comp.tf, TFTV news and VTF2 as far as I could be arsed to find historic data for prize money in the TF2 scene and then put it into a sheet.

http://i.imgur.com/5ccAqaB.png

For more info on the dataset, you can look at the spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1p0jMqp2eVjyVbbEGMLtJ78HqitavSRPGNqrRozJbi7c/edit?usp=sharing

I bet I missed a lot of smaller cups and stuff; if you know the prize money of any, please comment. :)

You're reading the graph wrong. Only the part shaded in ETF2L's color is their contribution. I've stacked all prize pools on top of each other to make the total clear. :)

this is a pretty normal type of graph and really useful for comparing both the value changes in individual leagues and tournaments as well as the overall prize money in tf2, idk why everyone is complaining.

oh, so they're literally stacked on each other; would be more detailed for comparing each if it wasn't like that

it looks like a standard line graph at first glance, i think the fact that there are lines in this causes confusion. Most cumulative charts I've seen are simply a solid color covering a specific portion of the graph.

Yeah these ppl must be so dumb lol like do u even integrate shitlords lmfao

If you didn't have an F in maths (or statistics which is what this is, actually) you should know that
a) area charts are bad
b) you must give a proper unit for the y axis of your charts, ie. "cumulative prizepools of leagues"
c) area charts are even worse when they look like line charts and everything your chart screams "this is a comparison, I'm a line chart!"

You mention how the y-axis has no "proper" unit but completely gloss over the x-axis.

Also, what's the best chart for providing both total and individual prize pools over the course of a few years and while showing the rate of growth of the esport (slope)? The area chart is really your only option.

TurinYou mention how the y-axis has no "proper" unit but completely gloss over the x-axis.

I gloss over it because nothing is wrong with it? I mean sure, it should technically be labelled, but it's quite obvious what it's supposed to represent here, as opposed to the y axis.

Also, what's the best chart for providing both total and individual prize pools over the course of a few years and while showing the rate of growth of the esport (slope)? The area chart is really your only option.

I'm not saying it's not the right chart for this or that it doesn't convey the information well. But area charts (as in linear ones like this one) are bad because they look confusing and almost everyone looking at one will mistake it for a line chart, as evidenced by this thread. And that's not because people are dumb or "bad at maths" but because line charts are much more common and because the design of an area chart is inherently convoluted and difficult to read as opposed to a line chart.

An easier to read option for this would be a stacked bar graph, since it's in fixed year steps. But my point wasn't that OP's chart is bad, but that it has to be made clear that it's an area chart if you're gonna use one, and that the readers cannot be blamed for mistaking it for a line chart.

So basically ESEA has the majority of the scene's prize pool since the beginning. Not surprising, but it does make me wish that their EU endeavor went over better with the community as there would likely have been even more prize money in the scene as a result.

I only included 6v6 events, so the answer is no.

c) area charts are even worse when they look like line charts and everything your chart screams "this is a comparison, I'm a line chart!"

Well, I very much so do not have an F in maths. I'm witing my bachelor thesis starting this autumn. Though it is in pure math and not statistics, I think my math is good enough to know the basics...

So to counter you:

a) There are no objectively bad charts.
b) Of course proper units are good. But (i) I provided it in the thread when asked, and (ii) it is not needed, since what the graph conveys is prize pool dynamics over time and it does not matter what the absolute numbers are or if they're given in USD or EUR.
c) This is a comparison of the total and its parts over time. It's not complicated.

But sure, I could have used stacked bars, but I think this is more aesthetically pleasing and conveys the same information. I also think it is easier to read the change over time for each part this way.

Cheers sir.

Are the ESL stats included? I'm finding it hard to get information on the prize pools for those seasons/events:

http://www.vanillatf2.org/tag/esl/

There might also be a couple of EU 6v6 cups with prize pools donated by angel which weren't the Nations Cups.

I found many ESH cups. I've compiled a full list below (cash prizes only):

2010

2011

2012

ESH tournament search results for TF2
ESH TF2 match results (Some cups don't have TF2 in the name and you cannot filter tournaments by game)

Let me know if I buggered up any of the links or cash amounts. I nicked a couple of these cup names from GeaR's profile. There's a bunch of other cups listed there too.

Wireplay 6v6 Season 7 also had a £500 prize pool. I could see if b0nes has more info on other 6v6 seasons which included cash prizes.

I don't mind digging around some more if you want. There's plenty out there to warrant some form of joint effort, especially if you plan to include regions other than EU.

Perhaps some of the older timers could help with the ESL prize money?

Let me know if I buggered up any of the links or cash amounts. I nicked a couple of these cup names from GeaR's profile. There's a bunch of other cups listed there too.

Wireplay 6v6 Season 7 also had a £500 prize pool. I could see if b0nes has more info on other 6v6 seasons which included cash prizes.

I don't mind digging around some more if you want. There's plenty out there to warrant some form of joint effort, especially if you plan to include regions other than EU.

Perhaps some of the older timers could help with the ESL prize money?

Added all the tournaments on your list. Thank you for helping, I'm really curious about stuff like this. :)

armadilloDoes this include only tournaments with prize pools of real money? Eniere organized a bunch of russian cups with prizepools worth a couple hundred euros, but mostly in keys i think

edit:
also some other things i dug up with the links from the post above
also did you include the more recent sunday razer cups? by my count there were 31, each with a prizepool of $100

there were also some "monthly mayhem" cups. they had $1000 prizepools i think there were only two though, one eu and one na

ESL
EMS VII 750 euros
EMS VI 750 euros
EMS V1000 euros
EMS IV1500 euros
ill get more soon, ik some of these sites are a little questionable but its the best i could get

also, would you mind posting the spreadsheet on google docs or something so people can see what individual events make up the broader categories? you may have missed some ozf cups, for example, which people could then identify

So far I've only included cash prizes, since converting hardware into euros is too arduous. Added the ESL and Razer tournaments. Are the ESH tournaments you listed the same as the ones Guyovich listed? And the sunday razer cups were in 2016, right?
