I don't really understand how the strange weapon system works. I understand how the weapons themselves work, but don't know how to get them. Other than trading, it seems to be through opening the crates....
however, upon looking at crates on TF2Wiki (http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Crate), apparently you're guaranteed to get a strange weapon when you open a crate. It says "note: weapons opened from this crate will be strange". Surely this can't be right! I thought they were rare - if they were this easy to get, everyone would have them.
So my question is, what is the chance that you will open a crate and find a strange weapon?

They're not rare, unless they're from those rare salvaged crates. Some people just don't care about Stranges, and some just can't spend money on keys to unbox stuff.

Um. Certain crates drop strange weapons. These crates have in their description items such as 'scatter gun' or 'medi-gun', 'rocket launcher', etc. What this means is no, you did not spend 2.50 on a key to get a normal weapon you get for starting the game. What it means is that if you get a weapon from that crate it is guaranteed to be strange. And they're not really that rare. Some strange festives are, or other festives, just because the crates are harder to find.

Because most stranges that you can get are worth less than a key the odd ones are worth more. so people don't take the risk they just trade for the one they want because they are for sure they will get it.
