would people like it if tf2 team would limit all customization to in game options and adv. options only?
the thing i like in ow is how everything can only be adjusted using in game options. that means no configs, no huds, no scripts. it means everyone is playing on the same playing field and settings that can easily be adjusted by all types of players.
i seriously think that currently all newer players are playing with a huge disadvantage when it comes to network settings, overall cluster on maps ( ragdolls, gibs ) and cluster caused by explosions ( no explosion smoke ). goddamn there is even a script that makes hearing footsteps easier. even no hats mod can give some snipers an advantage over newer snipers.
Personally i love custom huds, however i would easily accept it if tf2 team would decide to limit everything to create an even playing field for everyone.
what do you guys think?

what are the net settings like in overwatch
what are the net settings like in overwatch
rocketslaywhat are the net settings like in overwatch
my point wasnt to make the same net settings in tf2 as they are in ow
it was to make all customization in game only, just as ow does it

May just be me, but personally I like the community developed customization. I enjoy downloading custom files and being able to adjust them the hard way.
also, ow has like, zero visual customization at all apart from fov, no color changes, no positional adjustments

Why would you ever want to take away options for customization?

If you know how a game works you deserve an advantage imo.
Also, if you're a newbie you have really fucking giant disadvantages against more experienced players anyway, so these little tweaks and tricks won't even do much at that level.
And why blocking customisation if you can implement them anyway? Valve let's your character look how you want it, why not make your game look how you want it?

As far as hud stuff goes, until the default hud gets a major overhaul I don't plan on not using a custom hud
Personally the default hud is just not that good
- Health and ammo are in the far corners of your screen
- The indicators that show that you're low on health or ammo aren't quickly available (you have to look to the far corners of your screen to see that, but even in overwatch it's brought up from the corner a bit
- The boxes that stuff is put in aren't exactly ideal (as in their shape is a bit awkward), plus the ubercharge percentage for medic gets covered up when you see that you've gotten a message or a friend has launched a game/come online
Also the high degree of customization that's possible is one thing that has made tf2 so unique, so the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality is what should be applied when looking at what to do with the game

dont forget how literally unreadable the stock damage numbers are

uwuWhy would you ever want to take away options for customization?
to help out new players and to ensure that all players all playing on the same playing field.
also i dont want tf2 team to take away customization, i would like to see them put customization directly into game so a small percantage of players wont get an unfair advantage by using "hidden" customization.

this is exactly my point. players with custom damage numbers have a much better overview over the damage than newer players using the default tf2 damage numbers and therefore its an advantage only available to players that use customization OUTSIDE the in game settings.
dont take me wrong, i think custom damage numbers are great and all, but i would rather have an option to change them in the game options or not to have them at all. this goes for all the other customization available for this game.

you deserve an advantage if you know how a certain class works and knowing its strengths and weaknesses, not by changing values in certain commands and customizing the game OUTSIDE the game itself.
yes they let your character look how you want it to look, but you do it by changing items INSIDE the game. ( why do you even compare cosmetics to the amount of game changing customization you can achieve in this game? )

Rather than take away our freedom of community customization valve should just make the default settings actually playable, then let people do what they want from there.

You might get an even playing field, but it would be a shitty field tbh- I would prefer keeping decent fps and playable net settings please and thank you. The tf2 team could update the options and adv. options tabs ig but gl w/ that.

So you'd be perfectly fine if sites like huds.tf just completely died overnight because Valve decided that they'd implement some level of in-game customization that'd almost assuredly be abysmal compared to a singular custom HUD.
I'd love for the net settings to be fixed or something, but leave custom HUDs alone.

yes i would be fine with that, just like i would be fine with all the pug sites dying if tf2 team would actually implement one in the game itself.
also it doesnt have to die out, if tf2 team would make a button in game that redirects people to that site it would be fine. as long as its in the game itself so all players are aware that custom HUDs are a thing in tf2

I honestly think it's every dev's responsibility to make their game well optimized for lower end hardware and to make it look clean without a huge amount of visual clutter so players/attacks etc are very easy to distinguish. If these factors are satisfied then I think it's ok to be more restrictive with settings but I still think allowing people to have more customisable settings to their preference is always a good thing. High level players are almost always going to set the graphics to low to gain both of these advantages whatever you do, making the important settings easy to access and making the defaults non-garbage is probably the most important part.
I'm not happy with the way either TF2 or Overwatch does this, but as TF2 at least doesn't restrict most of its options I think the settings it has are far far better, even if these settings are often hard to find.
Valve would be much better off overhauling the default TF2 experience as opposed to changing the experience for players already invested in the game. Disallowing graphics settings has a negative impact on players who were already playing the game for long periods of time and has very little positive impact on the skill gap as new players are likely to be much worse anyway. Instead this could be addressed by making the default graphical and net settings non garbage, and adding in a decent tutorial and easy to navigate menus. This game is free so many of the people who play it will be children who don't have money to buy games- they especially are going to need the help in working out what the fuck is going on. Penalising players who already play makes no sense.

What I'd like to see in regards to customization:
- Advanced options being expanded, allowing for a deeper customisation of graphical settings (taking away from need for cfgs)
- Better net settings (this one is a huge deal, having seen the jump a projectile class main can make in super short time, just by changing lerp to acceptable levels, really leads me to believe that it does give an unfair advantage)
- A steam workshop for custom HUD's, giving new players an easy way to find and install new HUD's easily, filter out outdated HUD's for good selection of working, updated interfaces

I've always been surprised at how little customisation exists in TF2's core game.
I suppose people who are into the game can easily go off and do it themselves, but I find it odd that you can't have things such as different crosshairs for different weapons or classes, for example, without messing about with files and folders.

I would actually be happier if the default customization in TF2 was better and scrap the whole configs and custom files idea... Like, why is 90 fov still not default?? Why are default net settings terrible still??
I like simplicity, but in TF2's case, it cant be simple.

I used to use a hud then I realized all the huds look so bad with the huge health and ammo. I use bxhud right now I really like it but the only other one I could use would be default min. The eye travel is pretty irrelevant tbh, I didn't realize until I went back to default for a while.

you can change the health and ammo size rather easily...also if you look hard enough there are things like rayshud mini and mods of huds that have smaller health and ammo
