Why don't more people use it? Are there any downsides?
In case you don't know what it is, it's running tf2 in a borderless window with your vertical resolution value being like 15-20% lower than it should be which gives you a higher horizontal fov
Not running the game in fullscreen results in poor performance for some(most)
its been a thing for awhile but too much of a pain in the ass for most ppl to bother
Ran it for like ~6 months
1. It hurts your eyes. Might have just been me but it gave me headaches and eye strain
2. You have to be closer to your monitor to see stuff properly, it makes everything much smaller. (probably why I got eye strain)
3. The benefits are negligible. If people are still using 4:3 out of preference and they don't have any issues, this is for sure unnecessary.
Just so people are aware though you don't have to run it in windowed mode. You can mess with your monitor resolution to get it to work. I used a resolution switcher to make it work easier.

"sv_restrict_aspect_ratio_fov" = "1"
This can be used to limit the effective FOV of users using wide-screenresolutions with aspect ratios wider than 1.85:1 (slightly wider than 16:9).
0 = do not cap effective FOV
1 = limit the effective FOV on windowed mode users using resolutions greater than 1.85:1
2 = limit the effective FOV on both windowed mode and full-screen users

knuckretarded shit
Hurts your eyes? Why would playing on smaller resolution hurt your eyes? That makes no sense whatsoever.
You don't have to play closer to monitor. Things are effectively not so much smaller you wouldn't be able to see them properly. It's exactly the same as having a slightly smaller monitor.
The benefits aren't negligible. That's why people used OpenPlugin to get a higher FOV.
Also how is this Mirelin's FOV exploit? It's literally called having a custom resolution.

Unless you have tested it and have evidence, I don't think you can really argue with him

you can definitely get motion sickness from low fovs. theres drama about that whenever a games released without an fov slider.
theres always some resolution thats the most comfortable.
theres always some resolution thats the most comfortable.
It is scientifically proven that higher FOV leads to better gameplay. I suggest using a resolution like 1920x1 in order to get a FOV that approaches π. Only then will your potential unlock.

I play in 4:3 To help my fps. So I couldn't use this 'exploit' if I wanted too.

π = 180° in radian.
The math checks out.

i tried it once, it seemed like an added complication/fps decrease for negligible benefit (i play dm classes). if you wanna tryhard med (which is exactly what mirelin did) then it seems a smart, if unnecessary, thing to do
I play on 5:4 which is slightly lower fov than 90 and it feels better than when I experimented with 16:9 fovs and higher.
Forgot to add:
FOV does nothing.
It's all about the HUD.

i've been using it for almost 2 years and i find it useful but i also think it's nonsense unless you're playing medic
there's small amount of people who use it because most people don't see the point in changing something that's working
just quickly reading through comments
no need to play in windowed, nvidia, intel (and amd iirc) utilities have "add custom resolution" option (or you can use cru)
there is slightly higher fps variability but shouldn't matter if you're not playing on a toaster
from ETF2L config: sv_restrict_aspect_ratio_fov 0, no clue about ugc/esea
i guess the black bars matter on small monitors and depends how far from monitor you are

1. Create custom resolution in AMD/Nvidia software/control panel
2. Use launch options to set -w and -h of custom resolution
3. Run in full screen with monitor scaling disabled
4. ...

idk why I'm dignifying this with a response but I'm at work so fuck it rofl
The res hurts your eyes mostly because of the fish eye effect it creates. Not so much to do with the models being smaller
People already play pretty close to their monitors. Specifically scouts. Idk why but it makes focusing and tracking a target much easier.
FOV differences are negligible in the way that you don't NEED more FOV to play this game better. The game is pretty straight forward as to where people are standing. Those like 5 or 6 degrees of visibility aren't going to make a difference in 99% of games, so why would you use it if you don't enjoy it. This is a good example of how big the difference is between 4:3 and 16:9, and I'd say probably 15% of invite still uses 4:3 http://i.imgur.com/EzRNXSP.jpg
In the end it really comes down to preference, if you like the way it looks and feels then you should for sure run it. I don't like the way it looks or feels and only did it because I was a low open player that thought I was getting some sort of advantage.
edit - Alright I took 2 seconds to read your profile and realized I made a grave mistake assuming you weren't a turbo autist. Sorry to have wasted both of our times trying to walk you through my ideas on the matter
