MapleWhat do you mean you "don't like stuff like Tale of Two Cities"? What about Tale of Two Cities turned you off? If it was the language, I'd highly suggest you try suffering through it until you acquire the taste for it. You're losing out on hundreds of years of popular knowledge and novels that have been regarded as somehow "eternal" for centuries due to personal taste. I understand it can be difficult, but reading Western Canon is highly rewarding.

GaryA child hoods end

there are a lot of great books to recommend in this thread (Catch-22 for instance), but Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clark is possibly the least well known, and it's utterly fantastic, really embodies the true spirit of science fiction

SaberCATCH-22 MOTHERFUCKER
read ittttttttttttttttttttttttttt So good, I'd say it's probably one of my favorite books of all time.

that was such a shit book I don't know where to begin. It explored some extremely interesting concepts, but as a book I'd read for fun...

I just finished a book a few months ago called Ready Player One. Its based in the near future where everyone is hooked into VR machines to get away from the desolation of the world. A billionaire that founded the company left easter eggs in the virtual world and whoever found them won the company.

It's FULL of gaming references, 80's trivia, etc. It was an incredibly fast read and the characters were all pretty great.

Grendel, White Noise, The Pale King, Infinite Jest

Last three are heavier reading and require a time commitment, Grendel on the other hand, is rather short and still an excellent read.

I really liked that book, just I felt the ending was pretty much rushed. Like you find out his best friend is actually a lesbian girl, but then they basically don't talk for the rest of the book...

Moby-Dick

please, no one else will read it and talk to me about it :[

Also, if you have a smart phone you can stream it for free from here: http://librivox.org/moby-dick-by-herman-melville/

in fact you can stream any work of literature in the public domain from there. It's done by volunteers, but sometimes you can find a reader who knows how to present well, Moby-Dick being one of those. Heart of Darkness being another.

A couple of my favorites, one fiction and one non-fiction:

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
This book is dark, visceral, and violent, following "the Kid" and his time with the Glanton Gang, a group of mid-1800s scalp hunters. The antagonist, Judge Holden, is a deeply disturbing character. McCarthy's prose is tight and blunt, and you'll probably have to reach for a dictionary from time to time to get some of the archaic terms, but his style is biblical and grand and he is one of America's best living writers.

Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto by Chuck Klosterman
In this collection of essays presented as tracks on a mix-tape, Klosterman writes interesting, funny essays on the vast spectrum of pop-culture, digging for the "real meaning" behind everything from the Real World and Saved by the Bell to celebrity sex tapes and internet porn to the Lakers/Celtics rivalry. He's the type of writer who's incredibly readable even when his ideas are off-the-wall bizarre.
