So I had a thought the other day when seeing another message pop up in TF2 about two people hooking up via the diamond ring. I thought "Man, its sure cool that you can put out a message to the entire currently playing TF2 playerbase by renaming your ring."
Hey, wait a minute, aren't people talking about how to grow TF.TV into the hub of comp TF2? Isn't the biggest problem the fact people just don't really know about it? Why the fuck aren't we advertising the site when we have a tool to do so in-game?
Yes, its 100 dollars, but try to find something else that will put words in front of that many peoples faces for less. I'm sure there are some kind of filters for what you can and cannot say, it may need to be "Teamfortress dot TV" or whatever, but whats actually stopping people from doing this? Anything, besides a few people, maybe four pitching in 25 bucks?...to show of TF.TV to a huge amount of TF2 players at once?
Anyway, it could be possible there is a rule about this or someone else has suggested it and I'm a total idiot, but its a thought, and could be used for the powers of good(?) to help the site grow.
Shitty idea y/n?

I don't think the advertisement is sticky enough. Its a big leap to having a popup and actually having people read it/act on it

I don't even read ring notifications, I just hide them. And god damn they're annoying. Worst idea valve has ever came up with.

1. the first thing anyone says is "another 100 dollars wasted" and they dismiss the notification
2. most pubbers are too busy playing and don't take notice at all and close out of the notification
3. some people don't even have notifications on

Not as shitty of an idea as you might think.
20k can buy 200 rings. Currently TF2 has 36,399 players (47,000 at peak during the last 24h.) Imagine going on TF2 at peak time and dishing out 200 rings in a row all saying VISIT TEAMFORTRESS.TV YOLO or whatever. The 200 messages would literally be uniganorable (unless notifications were off, probably a real small pct of the population.)
Now, imagine these 47k players get blasted with an ad for 3 minutes straight. What percentage of those players would visit the site? 1%? 2%? 5%? 10%? Anyone's guess, however anywhere between 470-4700 people sounds pretty good to me!!! #worth

Do people actually pay attention to that? I hit my "k" key to close the window everytime it pops up. The only times I have actually paid attention to the notification was when I gave a ring away myself and the other time when "Frodo Baggins has accepted Bilbo Baggins' "The One Ring" "

the majority of people at least see it in game, It's better than any other advertising I can think of.
It's not a bad idea to try a few, just have to make a concise message that makes the average player want to check it out.
i.e.
www.teamfortress.tv tips from the pros
or www.teamfortress.tv take your game to the next level
Basically, lie to them.

Actually given the audience this could reach if done at the right time that's a crazy good deal in the advertising world. 10,000 views for you average banner ad online costs a bit over 100 dollars, and people probably will pay just as little attention to it as to tf2 ring notifications. Compare that to almost x5 the views at the same price and it sounds like a pretty good deal.

somehow i doubt enigma has an advertising budget for the site

It would be cool if we could use these to advertise big matches that are coming up
Like sending out some notifications when LAN starts
But that shit is $100, so its unlikely

I'm not sure if you're kidding but that is a pretty terrible idea. Star gets like 100k views a video. I don't think he'd mind making a video for tf.tv if you asked him to.

This, but also if we were to do it, I think the best time would POSSIBLY, be after a big update of TF2 that introduces new item sets and etc. for each class. But there's always accounting people never getting the update when they want too or having to wait, unless we waited maybe one day. If only the ring was out before the F2P update, that would be the perfect time possibly to do this.

100 bucks between a 6s team is like 16 bucks and change. Its seriously not a lot if a team wants to advertise, and seriously not a lot if a small group wants to actually advertise tf.tv.
Competitive TF2 has accepted Teamfortress.tvs "Check out Teamfortress.tv for Comp TF2 goodness!" Congragulations!
Realistically the majority of people with a HUD that disable that notification are people who probably already know of the site, the vast, vast majority of the playerbase would still see the message. Many will instantly click it away, but thats how advertising workings, not everyone checks it out, but you reach out to a lot of people regardless.

Just a suggestion....

someone mentioned it might be a good idea to use 1 each day of the charity stream to advertise when it goes live. i think its a decent idea but they're just too expensive. rather have the $200 donated to the charity.

droughtif someone wants to dish out 100, sure. but its remarkably cost inefficient
that depends on the effectiveness!
Since this thread is so much fun, I brainstormed some more really good uses of your hard earned cash! Here they are:
Withdraw hundreds of $1 bills, write "TEAMFORTRESS.TV YOLO" on each of them, and give one to every awkward nerd you see on the street.
Tattoo "TEAMFORTRESS.TV YOLO" on your forehead (obligatory blaze joke goes here)
Rent / Buy a dedicated server that plays only 24/7 2fort, call it "TEAMFORTRESS.TV #1 24/7 2FORT YOLO".
Give stabby $16.00x$9.00 to place a 1600x900 ad on his stream.
my paypal is still the same!
edit: i forgot to mention, the story of dropping 20k on virtual items would get picked up by 'GAMING JOURNALISTS' so fast oh my god like Kotaku would be all over that shit.

$100 for potentially 70,000 ad impressions. That's uhhh.. < $2 eCPM.
Still a better CPM than adsense. Enigma, this is your calling.

70,000 is really generous but on the other hand it's exactly TFTV's target market. no doubt about it.

I'm really surprised noone has used this for advertising, actually.
Putting myself in a new players shoes though, if I came to this site I'm not sure what would draw me in to it. The front page is basically a news feed for what's happening in the competitive leagues. All of the articles are about predictions for those leagues. Good for competitive players, but not so good for players outside of the competitive scene even if they have some interest in learning.
From my own personal experience in other game communities what drew me into particular sites was really their guides, walkthroughs and 'expert' tips. There's a wealth of knowledge from the players on this site but from a visit to the front page you really wouldn't be aware of where to get it. There's a guide section but that is not currently active.
I think if the goal is to drive new players into comp there could be a lot more emphasis on the front page of this site to guiding them in. Like a standing "intro to competitive tf2" feature or whatnot.

The only use of this before as advertising that I've seen has been for a porn site, so let us join them in the prestigious group of people who bought rings to advertise.
