Razer carcharias. I've had mine for 2 years now. Incredibly comfortable, sound great, good mic, fair price (plus best buy sells them so if they break somehow you can do the old switcheroo... Fuck best buy)
A friend of mine just recomended me this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104399
And I just bought it, so it better be damn good.

Also I bought the AD700s the other night while drunk and really don't like them compared to my HD 555s. They fit weird and they sound really hollow to me, especially in TF2. Just my opinion though.

Had it for a year, no problems. Good mic, good quality, very comfy. Can't really wear it with glasses though if that's a problem.

ATH m50s + zalman mic or mod mic, best 100$ I ever spent.

I use them daily, and I'd have to say there pretty spectacular for the pricetag.

AD700's and a modmic/zalman clip on.
Don't listen to anyone that recommends a "gaming headset", I guarantee you will not find a better all rounder set of headphones for the price than these, They do everything from music to gaming to being comfortable exceptionally well, and headset mics aren't generally great anyway so it's not worth worrying about the quality for your mic unless you wanna buy a condenser mic and an mbox and rest it on your desk. Just get something that works.

I've used my cheapo Logitech USB mic for ages, which has always worked pretty well. I've never received any complaints about it.
It looks like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RL84OY/
It's usually about $20, so don't buy it from the random, overpriced third-party seller who happens to be the only one who has it in stock at the moment.

I have a Razer Carcharias. Other headsets and headphones have been painful because I wear glasses, but these are pretty darn comfy. Nice sound quality, mic is nice/decent. Mine was gifted to me at full price, $80, but my boyfriend picked up a refurbished pair for $45 or so I think.
Happy to see razer/logitech/steelseries shit getting -fragged. Looks like the community is learning.

None of my Razer or Steelseries items have broken, and everything works great. I don't understand what the problem is.

But the Razer Carcharias looks stupid, has no LEDs, is built well enough to where I haven't broken it in a number of years, and has a split end to the cable for separate mic and headphone jacks and thus can be used for anything?
???
???
Did you choose the Carcharias yourself, or was the gift unguided?
To be fair atmo, the Carcharias does sound pretty good. Does it sound as good as 80$ headphones? No. But it's definitely at the top compared to most gaming headsets plus it's really comfortable. The only issues I've really heard about with the Carcharias are just build quality issues where the mic or one of the earcups goes out.
Get a comp with a quality soundcard and listen to both a razer/steelseries/thermaltake/whatever headset and a proper set of headphones. There is no comparison in the sound quality, the quality headphones win every time.
That's why people say to just buy proper headphones, they're just better, not even just for the sound. Better made, sound better, look better, more functionality, last longer, more comfortable, often same price or cheaper. There is zero reason to buy a XYZ gaming headset if your budget stretches far enough to buy some good headphones, and even if it doesn't you will not regret saving a bit more to buy them.

Do you guys recommend buying a sound card? What is a good one?

I chose it myself and I don't regret it. What are you getting at here? Are you just trying to be an elitist wiener garbler or what? OP wants suggestions, people are contributing with products they have tried and liked.
My stuff has never broken because of something I did. If you treat things well, they'll last and and work well worth your money. I play better than a lot of people with my Deathadder and Carcharias, and Steelseries mousepad. All three were gifts from people who know computers and video games, by the way. I trust them not to give me garbage.

i can recommend soundcards, depends on your price range though...audiophile gear is typically a little more expensive (depends on the company/model) but i can guarantee you will notice the difference in quality compared to just average on-board audio
