Maybe steam pipe might fix this when it comes. Or make it worse...
I just had this same problem when I was playing a pug today. I usually play at 240fps then it would randomly drop to 60 fps then be normal again.
I play on a i5 2500K @ 4GHz and a 660Ti Power Edition on MAXed out settings at 1080p.
I'm pretty sure it's just the new updates fucking with TF2.

Yea, I'm in same boat as you guys. I get this weird lag or jittering on enemy models. I think the damn update broke my game :(
I have sent the TF team an email about this problem. I would suggest everyone experiencing this problem to do the same.
kirby can you share the email for us non-english people?
so its easier to just sent them, much love in advance

i had the same problem and i did this:
Reinstalled // didnt help still kept happening
Removed all the hats in the game.. and that fixed it apperntly i am not getting any more random drops
I also updated to the latest nvidia drivers (i got a 680) and im able to play dx9 with this(this might also fix the problem not sure).
I have had loads of fps problems lately with the updates and shit and i got a really good pc, and removing all the hats gave it all back :D

if you haven't already, back up your cfg/resource/scripts/maps directories along with your hitsound and any demos/screenshots you want to keep, then delete the entire team fortress 2 directory
launch the game once which will recreate the basic file structure from the GCFs, copy your custom files back over, then relaunch TF2
not sure if it's causing your specific problem but this always makes my FPS go up noticeably if I haven't done it for a few updates.

Bruce DawsonJon/Kirby, I’m interested in investigating this problem. You can help us by installing a program that will let us capture detailed profile information. This program is called VTrace.
VTrace is a tool for recording detailed performance information about Windows computers and it is designed to allow diagnosing of performance problems in Valve games. It records ETW (Event Tracing for Windows) traces which contain detailed information about your computer. Because ETW is a system-wide profiler it records information about all activity on your machine, not just Valve games. It records details about your hardware, programs running on your computer, and files and registry keys accessed. VTrace does not record the contents of files on your computer, just the paths of files accessed while tracing is enabled. Within Valve games it also records user input, and if "Record Input" is checked it records user input in all programs. Tracing will only be enabled when VTrace is running. Vtrace only records traces - it does not automatically send them to Valve. You can choose to send the recorded traces to Valve, if you are working with Valve on a customer support issue. Valve will use the traces you send to assist with your customer support issue, and will protect the information in accordance with Valve's privacy policy.
If this sounds reasonable then I can send you an unlocking code for VTrace.

Keep us updated Kirby, I personally am experiencing the same issues.
Used to have 200 fps steady, now I had to cap it at 120, and even then it hovers at 119 and drops to like 30-80 sometimes for half a second... It's so frustrating >_>

Same issue you here. I keep at capped at 200, but it frequently caps itself to 60 (I get 58-59 FPS during that time, so it must be a cap) for a few seconds. At first I thought it was capping to the refresh rate for some reason, but then I realized I'm running 120hz, so it's not that.
You players that are dropping to 30FPS, do you all play on 60Hz monitors?

I'll be following these instructions he emailed me for VTrace when I scrim tonight as I seem to notice it more then than when I pub (dunno why, but whatever works). I asked Bruce if he could email me what caused this problem once he analyzes the traces sent to him. He said he'll try if he can. If he does, I'll post here. If not, I'll post whatever else he emails me.

Yeah I have a 60Hz monitor.. idk sometimes it's like my computer suddenly can't handle some things. Certain areas of maps, even if it's like a blank wall or something can trigger fps drops (such as areas where I jump off in a jump map, I notice because I'm going by them often if I'm retrying the jump)

I have a 660ti, 120hz monitor, run at a good 900fps in jump servers of which I play regularly.
I have been experiencing the issue where it feels like 20fps but still shows a great fps on netgraph. I tried different cfgs, dxlevels, nearly everything.
So having a good computer isn't what this particular problem is about.
I will never give up seeing my unusual for performance though xD

i have been having these issues too, ill be riding at like 300 fps and then i will go down to like 60 constant for 2-10 seconds.

i play on a 60 hz monitor and i get a 60 constant, so i guess there is no correlation between the monitors refresh rate and and the frames that it caps at.

I was having the same issue a week or so ago, I deleted the config and it seemed to solve it. But I was going from 200 fps down to 20 to 30 fps for no reason, everything was fine before these past updates.
Bruce DawsonI found that some slow frames were being triggered by a long-standing perf-bug that I fixed a couple of days ago, but the main issue is not clear. We’ll see.
I'm going to send him some more traces when I play later. I'll keep this updated.
In case anyone doesn't know what a "perf-bug" is (it's kind of clear), it's just a shortened way of saying performance bug.
I asked if this fix he made a couple of days ago would be seen in an upcoming update or if he's going to wait until he figures out the main issue. I'll post back with whatever answer.

By the way things are looking, the next TF2 update will address this issue slightly as the main issue itself isn't known. It's only a small fix, so the results may or may not be noticeable.
Other than that, I won't hear anything more about it until they can figure out what the main issue is and fix it in a later update.

have you tried to reset the steam cloud and cfg's? sometimes they change without us even knowing. also try -autoconfig in your shorcut parm's
Also make sure you have no other programs hogging your cpu, Sense tf2 is a CPU Based game. You can set which core's you want steam to use also. Sometimes a core that has went bad causes problems like this, Wild shot but hell nothing else has worked right?

Try using dx9, the problem is most likely terrible optimization for dx8. Testing it out right now, and so far it looks like dx9 actually runs faster/smoother.
has anyone found a solution to this, my game has been unplayable for a week and my sens is constantly changing, fuck this game
I switched from dx 9 to dx8.5 and it seems to be better - it still drops down but it's less noticeable :(
A short term fix :(

If you haven't already, try changing your resolution from 1080 to 720
That tends to give fps increase, at the cost of some pixelation

This isn't anything we can permanently fix ourselves. Considering the emails I exchanged with Bruce, it's a problem with the game and only they can fix it.
Lowering resolution, DirectX level, etc. are temporary solutions for some people but ultimately they barely help.

Yeah basically what i get by dropping to dx 8.5 from 9 is the random drops from 300 to 50-60 are instead drops from 300+ to 70-80, which are still annoying and impair my ability to play.
HovisSomething that I noticed after the update today, it'll feel like I'm playing at <30fps sometimes, while in net_graph my reported frame rate will be at least 200fps. I notice it on cp_badlands the most out of all the main 5cp maps.
My game will just become really sluggish/jittery while I stay looking at a certain spot or remain in a certain area of the map.
Anyone else getting this? Or got a fix?
Previously I had never experienced any fps issues, always silky smooth and at least 200fps.
Running Chris's dx9 frames on a Phenom II x4 3.8ghz + HD 6850.
do you run a second monitor? It may have something to do with your drivers try reinstalling at amd's website. also if the phenom has turbo boost technology it's better to keep it stable so the temps don't jump as much and voltage. also, do you have the intel 320 ssd? i've heard it causes those problems a lot.

Damn, if only I could get my new PC quickly to get anything above 30FPS XD my current one gives me 5-20 FPS (A toaster to the max)
no worries guys they'll fix this bug soon, just like the invisible playeohhhhhhhhhhhwait
maybe they'll give us more hats and dumb crates first
TF2: where casuals come first <|8O)
