I'm happy to announce, on behalf of RGL, the Modern Map Popup League. The new initiative dedicated to finding the next great competitive map and finally ousting Badlands from the map pool!
Together, competitive map developers and players have created what we believe to be a field of maps that are perfect for the modern meta of TF2 and could serve as the foundation for a new golden age of TF2 maps! The league will serve as a platform for the general player base to test and criticize these maps in order to help gain an opportunity to see them in league play. Not only that, but this league gives the chance for every TF2 player to see how GOOD these maps are, and how every map developer behind every map is wholly dedicated to making the competitive scene better by constantly creating and updating new maps and iterating over their existing ones.
Our goal is to create a conversation about these maps that have been thoroughly playtested prior to this league. We hope to have them be considered for the upcoming spring/summer leagues.

So us banning unlocks will make valve mad and stop competitive support but banning official maps and taking the matters into our own hands won't? Excuse me?

How is testing new maps in a league during off-season "banning official maps"?

not sure you are aware but valve essentially just use maps that were once customs and adds them as official maps once they gain popularity and are in a completed state, so yes it won't. thanks for trying tho.

I'm pretty aware and this does apply to most weapons aswell (apart from the stats). Genuinely curious why banning unlocks we don't want is a bad thing but doing the same for maps isn't

you literally just disproved your point? if most unlocks are community made and added to the game and those items being unbanned is a good thing then the same goes for the maps that are made by the community that are added to game and to leagues lol not really sure what you're trying to argue here. but thanks for your support i think!
apart from that badlands and granary have been the only stock maps in rotation since like 8 years ago.

Are you even reading? The "banning unlocks we don't want is a bad thing" bit refers to the belief that valve is more interested in supporting competitive tf2 if we do things like remove classlimits and stop banning unlocks. You know, the reason why the no restriction league is a thing. Now, again, I ask: why is it ok to take the matters into your own hands in this case? Badlands isn't a very popular map, but its an official one and it doesnt matter if it is originally community made. Why are you not replacing it with another official 5cp map, like vanguard for example? Are you implying that the map that (might) replace badlands will be added in the game for sure, so its no problem? Your passive aggressiveness isn't helping me understand why deviating from the original vanilla game is okay in this case.

glasstftv casting?
depending on matchups and such, there is already an arrangement for TFTV coverage! :)

Participated in a good number of the pugs for playtesting, will be interesting to see how the maps flow with more organized teams and strategies. Workflow and Kalinka are pretty sick in my opinion.

Although I haven't played all the maps in this map pool in map test pugs and other stuff, the ones I have played are a strong A+. Definitely gonna be a fun tourney!

Badlands and granary are actually bad compared to most of the maps in the poll even in their beta versions.
In particular I think Klondike was really underrated in the poll, but I think pretty much all of the maps that got in have potential.
Don't be afraid to play in this, the maps here have gotten much more thorough testing and play much better than the maps in previous testing tournaments.

There was a bug in the registration page that I just fixed, so you should be able to register now.
If there are any future website issues, please let me know either on here or through discord.
Also for anyone who's playing in our No Restriction Sixes league. This /will not/ conflict with your regular season games. The Tuesday matches do not start until the regular season is over. So this would only be an issue if your team is a top 4 team, and as always, you can reschedule your matches for other dates.
We had a really awesome HL Experimental Maps Cup in December where we had 40 teams involved in that. Would love to see the sixes community be able to match that.

I've been a part of many of the playtest pugs and seen all of these maps in development, they're awesome aesthetically and really fun to play. It doesn't take much to learn the maps off the cuff, looking forward to seeing what y'all think of the maps during the season

We really need more teams guys! please get your team to sign up for this! it is really important for the future of comp mapping and comp in general and will be a really fun pop up tournament, including some maps that could be in ESEA and other leagues around the world next season, we really need more teams! thanks!!
Reminder that this will be division based so there is space for everyone!

Why did this get cancelled? There was like 20 teams which is enough imo and me and my friends were really looking forward to playing this.

Teams created != full teams
There were 17 teams created, but the other day when Lucrative and I looked at it. There were only about 2-3 teams who had fully set up rosters. Looks like we have a few more today, but the only division that could possibly partially be run is Open. As our placement div only has 2 teams readied up in it and the Invite division had none.
Which is what prompted the cancellation.
For anyone who is interested in trying out some new maps, the RGL-HL team is hosting an experimental map cup. It starts next week. You can check it out at http://exp.rgl.gg/ Our winter 2018 had 400+ starting players in it, though I don't think this one will be quite as big. It's fun and some good warm up prior to season 3 of HL this May.

there was 2-3 full open teams and that was it, it was cancelled precisely for the lack of interest.
Im really upset about it, and I think its a major mistake to look over an opportunity like this to bring in new content to the competitive scene. The mappers have worked super hard to create these maps that are more than capable of being played in a top competitive setting, but sadly the stubbornness of the general 6v6 community is once again ruining a chance to bring in new content.
There was no reason to be not involved with this, I specifically reached out to many teams who could have played and just "didn't feel like it." Amazing that the same player base that complains about lack of updates, content and how bad ESEA is are not willing to support an initiative that brings in new content and a new league expansion.

Yea I was looking forward to it too. I hope you try again in the future as I had fun playing on the maps with friends and I had a blast make callouts for week 1 map line up. I hope cp_Domain and cp_Mist see play in the future as both maps are very special and play like no other standard map I have played. And thank you RGL team from try to make a competitive Renaissance era for tf2. I found No Restrictions Sixes to be fun to watch.

I feel like having signups during the end of a season really handicapped this league. While i wasn't playing i assume the usual "every team in esea dies and reforms" was going on for the final 2 weeks/offseason. Trying to get people to figure out teams for this new weird map league thing while their current team is dying/dead really hampered signups, especially when people could just wait two weeks for when everyone is lft and doesn't have commitments to scrims/teams.
When it was first pitched I was excited because I assumed it would run during the regular season and teams could dedicate one or two scrims to playing on new maps.
also lul sigafoo xd
also also lul change in the tf2 scene

RebiteI feel like having signups during the end of a season really handicapped this league.
I could see that definitely affecting some teams. However, we also had Prolander which had it's signups during the HL and sixes season and we didn't struggle to get teams. We actually ended up growing 40-50% over last season. We also had the No Restriction Sixes league which is larger than ESEA. And that had signups during the season and played during playoffs.
It's possible that the signups timeline could of affected some, but it is definitely not a factor stopping our other leagues from obtaining a player base.
I don't think that explains why this sixes map league only had 2 fully rostered teams days before the start.
