Looking for a calm game that I can play whilst I'm studying and just sorta have in the background and occassionally just pause and unpause back into it
I was thinking Minecraft, because that's all I know really, but I was playing that when I was like 12 and now my younger sister plays it. I was thinking maybe by now there's something more interesting.
Its either that or FlyFF which is another game I used to play as a kid. Just something that is kinda explorative, no real end goal but ultimately just calming and casual to some extent. Can be multiplayer or singleplayer

get an emulator and play some of the old pokemon games, so easy to get back into in-between sessions and the games are pretty much designed for pause and play

Oh I totally forgot to mention fire emblem on the GBA. I've been playing it recently whenever im on the bus or train and it's an amazing way to kill 20-30 minutes due to some of the later chapters being pretty difficult if you're playing to not have any deaths (honestly, who doesn't aim for having no deaths?, lol.) Although be careful, it's super easy to get sucked into and quite addicting.
i use to play flyff but mmorpgs are the devil so i try to stay away from them, when was the last time you played? I'm curious what they've changed since i use to play somewhat regularly 8 years ago.

try some rom hacks like glazed, dark rising, or prism if you're not interested in the newer games but still want a new experience, emulator only mind

well if thats the case try some chess
play on an unlimited timer and let your opponent know that youre studying at the same time so your moves may take a while. They shouldnt really have any complaints about it, otherwise they would play on a timer.

Cities: Skylines is great for this because you can leave it running in the background to some extent to let your city grow. Takes a reasonably good PC to run though so keep that in mind.

this might be a "popular" pick but I've always found stardew valley to be very soothing. it's not very good as a background game, though, as you always want to actively play it. and if you make the mistake of turning into minmaxing mode you can make the game into yet another money farm and partially ruin the soothing aspect of the game.

Slime Rancher.
I've taken antidepressants for the past 6 years of my adult life on and off, and when I go for periods of not taking it before starting them again, it takes a bit for them to settle in each and every time, spikes my anxiety, and has bad mood swings for the first week or two.
This game about collecting wiggly smiley faces kicks in way faster and makes me feel better.
