Lockdown Throwdown online event announced
posted in News

March 24, 2020

Events all across the globe were affected by the corona-virus, and Copenhagen Games 2020 was no exception. However, to brighten the day of the players who were expecting to be playing competitive TF2 at LAN instead of sitting bored at home in quarantine, the event organisers Phoenix Red have put their combined efforts towards an online substitute tournament called Lockdown Throwdown.

Sign-ups are open until April 8th, 21:00 CEST on lockdown.teamfortress2.com. The online 6v6 tournament itself will take place on Friday & Saturday April 10-11, sporting a 250 key prize pool provided by KritzKast and mannco.store. The exact distribution of the prize fund will be revealed closer to the event. The group sizes and split are similar to what was in mind for Copenhagen Games 2020, with 4 Invite slots and 4 slot reserved for the teams from the open groups able to fight their way to the playoffs.

Tournament servers, hosted in Amsterdam, will be provided, and if teams from North America are willing to play on high ping, they are allowed to sign-up and take part as well. Matches will be broadcast on KritzKast, starting Friday, April 10th, at 16:00 CEST.

What will the timeframe be for the tournament on Friday and Saturday? For any NA people who want to potentially play it would be good to have at least a rough schedule so we can see what the time zones would make it look like.

2.8 Players that at the start of the event have been banned from ETF2L (for European players) or RGL (for North American players) or a league of similar status in their respective regions for 1 month or longer are not allowed to participate in the tournament.

Does this mean I can't play because I have been previously banned for 3 months or does this mean you have to be currently banned for over a month to not participate?

It means you can't have an active ban with more than 1 month left on it at the start of the tournament.

jnkiwhat the fuck man

I believe the TOS would have been carried over from the Copenhagen LAN where this rule was valid for security reasons (prevent DDoS attacks) and to ensure that singular focus is given to the competition, making it easier to quote things like "this TF2 event pulled in X number of eyeballs". Those metrics are important for us to be able to present as it helps secure better (or in some cases, any) future sponsorship. @ LAN this rule is enforceable on a network level, so no-one can stream from their desktops even if they wanted to. For an on-line only competition there's actually nothing we can do to physically stop you. And during the prelim matches with so many battles going on it may be the only chance for your followers to see you play, assuming we're not covering that match on our stream.

I can only humbly ask that you show some respect here for everyone's enjoyment of the event.

  1. add a 90 sec delay to your pov stream (to prevent your team running at a disadvantage and your viewers being able to spoil results)
  2. to host the main channel, KritzKast, when your match is being streamed; especially important for the Semi & Grand Finals.

- Updated Rule 2.7 (regarding livestreams)
- added Rule 6.7.1: Maps (ETF2L S35 map pool)

Thaigrr2.8 Players that at the start of the event have been banned from ETF2L (for European players) or RGL (for North American players) or a league of similar status in their respective regions for 1 month or longer are not allowed to participate in the tournament.

Does this mean I can't play because I have been previously banned for 3 months or does this mean you have to be currently banned for over a month to not participate?

Actually, it was meant slightly differently to what GipsArm said in #8.
You cannot participate when:
- on 10th April you have an active ban that on this day is active for 1 month or longer

You are o.k. to play if you have no active ban or you have been only banned for less than a month at the time of the tournament. This basically means that 2-week demo bans or similar bans won't affect your eligibility to play.
Cheaters are not okay to play though.
The 1-month-part was basically implemented, because for LAN we couldn't really say: No banned players at all. If you had gotten demobanned 1 week before LAN with all your stuff booked it would have created awkward situations...

Teams who signed up for invite but do not make it into the invite group will automatically be seeded into an open group.

Wow, we have already reached the planned maximum of teams.
But since there seems to be interest of more teams, we say: screw our plans!

We have increased the maximum from 32 to 64 teams, so you can still sign up!!

Please note, that not all teams will be able to participate. We will think of a format which includes as many teams as possible, but until the end of signups (8th April. 21 CEST) we will likely not exactly know what the structure will be. Only one thing is for sure: there will be a ton of TF2 played on easter weekend!

We have now verified the first 28 teams that signed up. You should have received an Email.
You are going to be allowed to play, not matter how many more teams sign up or what structure we will end up using in the end. The other teams sadly will have to wait until after the signups closed in order to know. :(

One more important thing: We will start making the groups and brackets immediately after the signups close.
You then will have a window of approx. 24 hours (9th April) to "check in" to the tournament. This step is necessary for us in order to find out which teams already died after signing up or simply cannot play due to unforeseen circumstances.

Should you not check in, you will automatically be replaced by a team on the waiting list.

In any case, please let an admin know ASAP should your team withdraw from the competition!

We accepted another 28 teams today, exactly doubling the intended size of the tournament!
If you are amongst these now 56 teams, your spot is guaranteed. If you are not, then you have to wait until teams which signed up earlier than you drop out.
That said: PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOUR TEAM WISHES TO NOT PLAY THE TOURNAMENT!
First teams on the waiting list at the time of writing this are:
57. The Joe Zone
58. clarted gaming
59. McBities
60. Lithuanian Rapsody
61. SOP
62. Baltica Olds
63. Boomer Squad
64. conotech
... + more

Updates on the new schedule and format will be published within the next days.

zxpSo if I sign up now, we can only play if a team drops out?

More like 18 teams, but yeah.

Seems unlikely that we will accept more than 56 teams at this point, but it may be.
