Yet another insane RGL ban handed out
1

A TF2 player named MelonTf, on TFTV as 2Melon, has received a ban on RGL for the "use of racial slur in players alias during RGL match."
Looking at the logs of the RGL match in question, Melon's alias at the time was "Tay Keith他妈的这些黑鬼". When taking the Chinese section of his username, it translates roughly into "Fuck these nigga".

What Melon's alias is actually referencing is a producer tag of Tay Keith, a hip hop producer who marks beats he produces with a vocal line in the beginning saying "Tay Keith, fuck these niggas up". Melon's alias is not using "nigga" as a slur, as the word as used in his alias (and the original thing being referenced) is used as a way to address a (fellow) black person, or when plural, sometimes a group of people without racial distinction, as opposed to the word being used in a disparaging way. The reason part of his alias was translated into Chinese is just due to a Chinese translation meme of the past year or so (he definitely took his alias from somewhere else on the internet, and many people who will read this will recognize it).

Expanding upon what was said before: the word as a slur is ordinarily displayed with a hard-r representation. The word as a term of endearment/means of addressing a person or group, usually does not appear in this form. Since signing up for RGL does not require a player to dox themselves and reveal their ethnicity, it can become difficult to police if saying "nigga" would warrant abuse (even though in this case it doesn't even matter since it's entirely referential), but at the same time, banning the word from being used entirely chooses to ignore a small but normative part of black culture.

Also, it's safe to say this ban is definitely the result of RGL's own witch hunting of their self-identified "problem members" who were identified in a large banwave back in January, as no sane person playing against them or viewing the logs would even bother to translate his alias.
(Open question to RGL: what were the reasons for the bans placed on kuhnockers, phoxx, and della, other than "associating with bad people"?)
Quoting from a previous RGL ban thread:

ReeroVeccThey are literally digging thru logs to ban peoplefunny thing is that they literally do this. i have heard from an unnamed rgl admin that several members from the admin team would talk about how they "needed to find evidence to ban scratch" and would actively stalk his logstf page to find anything they could pass off as bannable.
this league is a fucking joke

Obviously, it's not just Scratchh receiving this treatment.

TL;DR: RGL's language policing is extremely poor. RGL wants to boot some allegedly awful players out of their league, but their attempts to do so have thus far had absolutely terrible justifications.

I only feel the need to make this issue public since I don't believe RGL admins will do anything otherwise, and just silently backpedal on bans only after the general public disagrees, for the nth time, with more to come.

this ban isn't really fair i guess, but you shouldn't expect people to know something written in chinese characters after a name is a reference to the producer tag of a hip hop producer

beyond the ban itself, how hard is it for some people to just not say the n word ? ?

Psure melons been "abusing" people in lower level pugs (with newer players) for years now...

I really dont want to be seen as taking a side but surely there is more to this story. It seems that both parties are being painted as completely wrong when its probably closer to 50/50. Perhaps a neutral 3rd party could report on this.

IMO, RGL does seem a bit petty in this but I think they are partially justified in the desire to create a good, wholesome platform.

TF2 judiciary branch when?

I’d like to start off by apologizing to my employer, Troll Face Esports. My actions were my own and do not reflect the ideals or goals of the company as a whole, and I regret that this has reflected poorly on them. I’d also like to thank the CEO, gibustf, for retaining my employment through this complicated situation. I further apologize to my fellow employees increasing their workload through my absence. I will repay you all upon my return.

Continuing, I acknowledge that my choice was inappropriate and hurtful to my peers, especially during this time of unrest and social tension. There is no excuse for what I have done, and I will accept the punishment in full. Taking such language lightly is no longer acceptable and should be met with swift corrective action. I hope that this will be a learning experience for not just myself, but also any others who would repeat my mistakes. This seems to be a common issue among the community and my situation will hopefully discourage others from doing the same. I also apologize to my peers; I am sorry that I have presented you with such a childish and insensitive image.

Going forward I will be submitting a release form to Troll Face Esports to confirm that any future aliases meet the company standards. This will not happen again.

With my sincerest apologies,

I'm usually not that big of a fan of alias policing, but this is actually incredible. Just don't put the n word in your alias, I know it takes 3 more brain cells to calculate that process in your head. You know rgl is going to ban you for this type of stuff, so just come up with a better/different/.not offensive alias.

segundoWhat Melon's alias is actually referencing is a producer tag of Tay Keith, a hip hop producer who marks beats he produces with a vocal line in the beginning saying "Tay Keith, fuck these niggas up".

I'm not buying this excuse. You can use any type of media that says the n-word and suddenly that makes saying it okay? Also don't act like saying the n-word is some type of social justice to appreciate black culture. That in itself is untrue and would get your ass beat if you weren't doing it behind a computer screen.
