In the screen resolution window, before clicking "Advanced Settings", make sure he has the correct monitor selected, otherwise it will only give you refresh rate options for the other monitor. It will list itself as "Generic PnP monitor" with almost any monitor; that just means it doesn't require any drivers.
Also, are you sure he has the right monitor? the 144hz is the VG248QE.
He has one monitor and the v248H is 120hz.
Do you have a link to a 120hz V248H? I couldn't find it at all, only the VE248H and the VS248H, neither of which are 120hz.
What cable is he using to connect to the monitor? Either way, Asus usually have their monitors named in Windows so even if it isn't 120hz, it still shouldn't show as a Generic PnP Monitor.
