I think the best thing for people do to at this point is just not give it any more attention than it already has. He's hit his lowest point and playing more TF2 or getting any further into this would just hurt him more.
He needs to figure this out either by himself, with his family, or with a therapist. Or all three.
Just don't let him onto your teams when he inevitably tries to come back next season, it'll only make it worse.

I've been using http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Amplified-Universal-Headset-Playstation-3/dp/B00BDS415I for over a year.
Has a good mic, and it's comfortable.
This is only if you definitely want a full headset. I'd agree with Bonafide about the Pistons. I have a pair and they're awesome, if you find the right mic.

I've been wanting to make a frag vid of the last 3 seasons of plat, but every cool moment I've had I just remember, "oh wait I was playing heavy" and anything just seems like it had nothing to do with my own personal skill

DontProbably interested, but (A) only going to be 17 and (B) only have high iron skills at best (just started all this comp jazz a couple months ago). Can someone give advice as to whether I should show?
I went when I was a Silver Heavy and had a lot of fun, even if it was for different reasons. GXL 2013 was fun because I hung out with the few people I knew and got to see all these awesome players IRL. GXL 2014 was fun because I had a footing in the community at that point and got to hang out with all these people I knew.
So, if you know even one or two people, I recommend going. To meet the people you know and be able to spectate some awesome TF2
