Cloud Atlas was pretty bad in my opinion. It went on for three hours, jumping around five different story lines in five different time periods, and for the love of god, one of the time periods was post-apocolyptic with people that spoke broken English, so my fiance and I only ever understood every fifth word. The movie has received reviews at both ends of the awesome-shit spectrum, but I honestly had a really bad time with it. It's a shame because some of the ideas were really interesting, or could have been.
The Twilight films are obviously not a favorite here, but I kind of wanted to say a wee bit about them.
Mostly, it's the fault of the directors, but at the same time, the books aren't paced in such a way that would make for good watching. Every installment is told in first-person, which never really seems to translate well into film. If you have read the books and can imagine an intense scene between Bella and the vampire(s), you'll probably realize that a good portion of the book is inner monologue. A lot of the conflict Bella faces is explored more in her head than she really says outwardly in the book or film. So what you're pretty much left with is angst and painful lack of interesting dialogue, in addition to no action because the book seldom had it.
I think the films make the books look worse than they are, although I know they're not award-winning material.
